If you look at old pictures from the beginning of the 1900 you will see NO handbrakes. Pedaling backwards to break therefor is in our genes. Only since the 1980's we saw kidsbikes with handbreaks. So since being a kid you would learn to use pedalling backwards to break. When living in the centre of Amsterdam 32 bikes of my family got stolen. Near our home we chained them to a streetbench with a boatchain. It was almost only when we went groceryshopping, or going to work when they got stolen. Bikes get actioned off.

The reason is due to bikes having a freewheel due to the gear cassette.

My childhood bikes had that, and it was perfectly fine. As I got older & my bikes larger, bikes swapped for hand breaks. I had only one bike that had both breaking methods. If it’s considered easier than hand breaks, then it’s not that hard

In the US back braking is on children’s bikes the hand breaks are for teens and up

Outside of Europe people are tuned to ride bikes as some kind of sport or exercise. Sure you can buy a bike and add pannier racks, fenders, lights, etc. so the bike is a little more useful, but at the end of the day bikes are generally regarded as an equipment for exercise and our countries road infrastructure is reflective of that - it's why our governments don't take bicycle infrastructure seriously. If more people rode a bike designed as a means for transport (such as a Dutch bike is) rather than sport the attitude towards proper bicycle infrastructure would change. I own an actual Dutch bike like the one in the video (rare in Australia) which gets me everywhere I need to go including distances greater than a few miles and up hills.

My question is: what's actually wrong with road, hybrid and mountain bikes? Don't get me wrong, Dutch bikes are designed for a transport-but only for a very short distances and very flat terrain. It's kind of foolish to see this type of bike as a one-size-fits-all solution.

  • @PerfectAlibi1

My bike is in very good condition too and it's 25 years old!
Biggest maintenance was new outer tires, as they wore out multiple times.
And once new inner tires, again wear and tear from just using the bike.
Offcourse a few flat tiers, but that's obvious.

    • @MakingitinHolland
      @MakingitinHolland  Před 2 lety

Yes! As long as you do small updates to it every now and then, these bikes survive for many many years. 😃

The name omafiets. IT had this name because iets a womans bike so you can ride IT wearing a skirt. And it is An old model bike. Very strong.
About bike locks. When I came to Utrecht. Most locks were more expensive than the bicycle. The Idea that old bikes were not worth straling. Although after a time that was the reason older bikes became more expensive.
Once a time a friend of me Bragged about this certain lock that no one Could break. The next Day an other friend Showed that type of lock "opend' he Just took a look around the bicycle parking at Utrecht central station.
A lock does not prevent straling, IT reduces the chance.

Thats too bad. If you've watched the original video, the guy suggested bringing additional lock to keep your bike safe. Not sure why this video omitted that part since I myself needed to watch the original one. I was like, theres no way he will recommend using just using that lock.

In the Netherlands, there’s no hills, there’s no urban sprawl, and there’s no hot weather whatsoever.

Vietnam has hot weather, but it still had LOTS of bicycles (now mostly replaced by motorcycles and mopeds). Excuses.
Also, if urban sprawl is the problem, lobby to abolish/lessen the zoning regulations.

A second lock on your bike is only necessarily in certain cities or locations. Grocery shopping for instance is fine with one lock.
Also, you don't have lights on your bike to avoid a ticket. You have lights not to get driven over by cars.
Nice video though, thank you for making it.

Driving without lights is terrifying. No clue why people do it.
Dynamo lights make sure you never really have to worry about it.
