My father started as a floor sweeper in the Colgate factory in Jersey City. He got the job during the depression because his older brother who had been hired was too hung over. So my father started work under his brother's name at $12 a day. He had quit school at 14 because his father had died and left the 7 children without an income. By December 1941 my father was in his late 20s and had risen to Colgate's Dockmaster, in charge of the ships that came and went with raw materials and finished products.
By then he had 3 children. Me (8), my brother (6) and my sister 2 weeks old. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany declared war on the US. As an issue of national security and protection of the NY Harbor, the US Coast Guard militarized control of the harbor and everyone in charge of the hundreds of shipping docks, including Colgate's. My father was scheduled to be USCG Warrant Officer who, like all the other dockmasters, would continue his civilian job but be responsible to the USCG on security.
He failed the physical. His persistent cough turned out to be Tuberculosis. At that time it was a highly fatal disease. His brother had died of it at 22. It was so highly contagious that he was not permitted to go home from the diagnosis. He spent the next 9 years in a TB Sanitarium. But he had been an athlete, even while working, and had a strong constitution. He was eventually cured in 1950 by the combination of war-developed antibiotics and battle-field surgeries skills that the doctors brough back into civilian practice. Half of one of his lungs was removed. He was the fifth man known to have survived that radical surgery.
Back then, companies like Colgate were noted for loyalty to good employees. That loyalty was returned by their employees.
During my fathers 9 years in the sanitarium he educated himself by mail order courses and correspondence. He took many courses by mail and through books. When he was fully recovered in 1950 they hired him again. Within a few years he was the Chief Engineer of the largest soap and toothpaste manufacturing factory in the world.
My mother was treated by Colgates with great respect. While my father was in the hospital, they employed her as statistician in their home office at the factory. She supported our family. When they built a landmark tower on Manhattan, she was transferred there and eventually became the purchasing agent for the essential oils, perfumes and solvents used in their products with a corner office overlooking Park Ave.
When Colgates. built a research laboratory in Piscataway, NJ, he oversaw its construction and became General Manager of the labs. They retired in the early 1970s and moved to Florida where they spent their final years in comfort.
All that remains of the original Jersey City factory now is the famous clock. It stands on the shoreline facing the river, a short distance from Jersey City's most famous monument, the Statue of Liberty. I am now 91 years old and live not far from that site.
Thanks for sharing your story. God bless you.
That's a fabulous story!
Loved this ❤❤
that was a great novel!
Interesting story, it's also very encouraging,be blessed.
you say the main goal is protecting teeth, I say the main goal is MAKING MONEY!!! Also, it's TOOTH PASTE not TOO PASTE
I am so happy that I am not the only one who heard TOOPASE
Yep tooTH!
with your logic then, the main goal of doctors and teachers also would be to make money..
@@partharoy2185 That's right, considering current times.
I feel like it's some sub-par AI voice. Every sentence. Is read. In the same way. 😂
Colgate toothpaste is dominating the Indian Markets.
Because most Indians these days are gullible and do not know that natural materials like neem twigs, or babool twigs, or toothpowder with finely ground charcoal plus camphor plus ajwain plus clove plus salt is very effective.
Didnt need to spend the first 3 minutes telling us what toothpaste is. We know.
Sounds like an AI-generated script, not to mention the voiceover.
So why did u😂😂
Started with Colgate and finished with its competitors.. (TM) lol
BTW most people do not know that toothpaste can be used up to three years after the date on the tube.
A percentage of the tooth paste is left in the tube and cannot be squeezed out by the consumer. I need to cut the tube down the center to use the 7-10% that fails to get squeezed out by the average consumer.
I do that differnetly. When it can no longer be squeezed out I hold the tube firmly on the side that has been pressed closed at the end between thumb and pointer finger and shake it back an forth (be careful of ones eyes incase it slips out). This forces the rest toothpaste from the volocity from the bottom to the opening. Generally within three to four days the major part of the rest has been sqeezed out. I then cut it open in it's diameter roughly one third from the end. I scoop the rest out with the toothbrush. The part I cut off is used as a cap to cover the opend tube until it is finished. I do this with all tubes whether toothpaste hand creames or other products. My tubes are completely empty when I throw them away.
@@robertthomas6127Man just buy another tube of toothpaste it’s only $1 for a tube of toothpaste at dollar general. You do/doing too much
I cut the tube at one end near the nozzle and just squeeze the tube flat. With dish soap bottles and shampoo bottles, when they are practically empty, I unscrew the top and spray some water inside. I can get quite a few more uses out of them and it cleans out the bottle for recycling.
@@kenbob1071 .. I do something similar. One can use the rest of most products. I even reuse the rest from terpentine and other thinners after the paint settles when possible. At one point I used one container of terpentine to clean brushes for over ten years and I did a lot of painting back then. The people that produce this stuff surely hate me. 😂😂😂😂
Am I the only one who noticed Oral-B tubes (P&G product) being filled (7:19] in a video listed as “How Colgate Toothpaste is Made”? Seems like some copyright error was made to me.
everything about this video is a mess 😆
Oral B is a Colgate product in the UK, but a P&G product in the States.
I noticed it honey
fithecat ....P&G owns Colgate to my knowledge. Google which companies belong to P&G you will be surprised how many companies are still under their original name but are no longer independant.
@@robertthomas6127 100% agree
I'm working in Colgate for 30 years on my last day of working l overheard by one of the visitor from the US says gurgle with salt don't use Colgate paste.

Colgate Toothpaste Philippines.🇵🇭
Very smart 😮 too ❤❤❤❤
I love Colgat Tooth Pasta
Consistency you say? I had one toothpaste, twice, of Colgate, red design, extra whitening, an expensive one. It had softer moments and it had hard moments, within the same tube, I had to press it against the washing basin to get something out of it, in the middle of use, not at the beginning or the end. And yet it wasn't as whitening as the other brand I am trying currently and that one does seem to have a better whitening effect. At a lower cost.
Oh the irony....
William Colgate, an Englishman and the English today have a reputation for bad teeth (or "bad tee" as the AI narrator would say!)
This toothpaste is indispensable to us
The Colgate toothpaste manufacturing industry and machinary compress system, of how to manufacture with a raw materials and the incubic to applied ingredients and the formula which you have to uses
Everyone must brush their teeth everyday and night to keep their teeth healthy
Wonderful call of the gate👍🎉🥳
Why some colgate tube is not full it has pressure inside, once pressure is released...almost half of the toothpaste only inside...#why?
Good and fresh for my tooth and Gum
❤❤❤❤ i like it
Love it .
Here to see if they included the part where they inject the air bubble in the tube.
This the business plan lol
Colgote toothpaste, which is COUNTERFEIT Colgate toothpaste!!
thanks for the efforts.................
The logo of the tooth paste covering all of the brush is a way they make you use too much so you buy more
Fun fact,Oral B in the United Kingdom is manufactured by Colgate but in the United States,it is manufactured by Proctor&Gamble.
Lol
@@d.k.1394 SmithKline has the patents on Oral B Dental products, and they license them out for so many years to a manufacturer. Here in America,it is Procter&Gamble, and in the UK,it is Colgate.
Whatever it may be, but it will contain chemicals that will cause more harm than good in the long run. Sodium laureth sulfate is one culprit. Preservatives, anti-bacterial chemicals may also cause problems in future. In some countries they use calcium carbonate from pulverized bones from the slaughterhouse industry, and people are ignorant.

if viscosity standards are not met, it would be catastrophic, who would have thought!
The most important part is not shown; How the powder is made is not shown.
I don't understand why they use fluoride in the toothpaste, when fluoride is a by product of mining, if you spill fluoride
on concrete it corrodes, and when they transported in a tanker truck it has Hazmat stickers on the tanker. So is the fluoride in our toothpaste causing cavities?
Fluoride is REQUIRED to be injected into municipalities water systems throughout the United States as a means of reducing cavities in children. Since Americans have fully embraced “bottled” water now because it tastes so much better than tap water, the need for Fluoride in tap water now is an effort in futility!
no floride prevents cavity by bonding to the teeth
Very amazing objection,,
It’s very true the fluoride is known among substances that cause cancer…Could it be the possible causes of oral and throat cancers after using it for longtime?
trueamericanpatriot..... No it is prohibiding them. It's all about the quanity. In the late sixties early seventies I assisted a dentist while in the Army. Every now and then soldiers coming throuh our clinic for in processing checkups would be asked by our dentist where they were from? They would tell him where and ask why he wanted to know. HIs reply was because of the brown spots on their teeth. They were caused by fluoride that had been added to the water in the area they came from. At the very beginning the allowed quanities were to high and it caused these spots. Since then to my knowledge the levels allowed have been lowered.
@@sostinephylis9585alcohol in mouth wash is a leading cause of oral cancers. It dehydrates the cells. Australia has banned all mouthwash that contain alcohol.

why is it necessary to spend money on cardboard boxes for a product in a printed tube?

Tooth paste containing glycerine prevents the chemicals in saliva re mineralizing enamel.
Aluminum is a poisonous metal and should not be used to store or cook anything that is used in the mouth. Abrasives used in tooth paste wear off enamel and are not acceptable. In India after Colgate tooth paste came all the problems of the tooth started, like caries because of glycerine used in Colgate, and so on.
Sodium fluoride is not good for your teeth either. It is a neurotoxin also.
Toothpaste no longer comes in aluminum tubes. Have you noticed the switch to plastic?

My only hope is they research more eco-friendly ways to provide us with these "essentials", e.g. recyclable product packaging. For me research/funds should go into that instead of creating new flavours.
