  • What is the secret for a long, healthy and happy life? You're about to find the answer in this incredibly inspiring documentary about seniors.
The film challenges our concepts of aging by showing you how lots of Canadians in their 70s and 80s are choosing to stay super active in their retirement.
These people are facing cancer, arthritis, heart attacks, bone fractures, knee replacements, fatigue and the loss of loved ones, but they won't give up and stop having fun. On the contrary, they've taken leading roles in their communities and help other seniors stay fit every day.
The Fit Generation is a passion project created by Elton Hubner, the founder of Eyes Multimedia, a video production company based in Vancouver, BC.

Loved this documentary thank you for filming it. My 91 year old mother is in Hospital at end of life.... she was an inspiration to all of her 5 children..... she and dad taught us badminton and we all played local competitive tournaments, she took up tennis and began coaching kids for 20 years, she took up squash and loved the socials that went along with all these sports. Mom broke her leg (femer) on the tennis court running back to hit an overhead shot at the age of 78 that ended her racquet sports so she kept swimming. I remember as a young girl mom doing exercise to Jack Lalane on TV and I did it with her. Mom had two knee replacements in her 60's from wear and tear of racquet sports. She recuperated so quickly and was back playing 3 times a week. I became a fitness Instructor and then a Yoga teacher from her encouragement to do what you love and love what you do. Mom came to my Yoga classes for years. I teach Water Yoga in her backyard pool for last 16 years..... mom loved doing it with me once a week and chatting with ladies after the classes socializing in her backyard. This year we had our first class last week and everyone commented on how strange it is not having mom there to joke and laugh. Dad died 10 years ago, when he retired he began coaching adults badminton at our local community center till he broke his leg at the age of 82 years old and died in ICU from complications. Dad did not hurt himself on the badminton court.... he went to buy a car after his 82nd birthday and fell going into the car dealership in the winter. Mom developed dementia a few years before dad died and it worsened with his passing but she still had fun and lived in the moment because she could not remember the past. She told me "it is good to have short term memory as you forget any bad things" While in hospital from heart issues that can not be repaired.... not being able to be active...... being poked and prodded with blood test after blood test... mom said "this is not fun anymore" so she stopped eating and decided to die. All her friends have passed, all her siblings and spouce have passed...... she lived a great life and now is done. It is sad and after crying a lot I now repect her wishes and see how much joy she feels in receiving our touch. My siblings and I brush her hair as she purrs delight. Mom loves as we help the PSW give her sponge baths and massge her body. We enjoy her smiles as we tend to her. Mom is not in any pain and she sleeps lots during the day. We play her favourite music and sing with her or to her when she is awake. We see the grace in her. We were brought up to stay active and play whatever sports gave us joy. Our parents gave us a great legacy of staying healthy, fit and happy.

I appreciated your video documentary and the wise words of all of your participants, and agree with almost all of what they had to say. I am a 70 year old, and my regular exercise is fast walking 3-4 times per week. I normally walk 7 km with times of 58 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, either outdoors or on a treadmill. Most months I also go mountain biking - 40-60 km/month. A couple of British scientists (N.A. Duggal and R.D. Pollock) published several articles in the journal Aging Cell investigating the effect of long distance biking on the health of 55-75 year old men, and said regular sustained exercise of at least 45 minutes duration kept the thymus gland functioning normally and prevented its atrophy, which helped maintain muscle mass and strength, essentially preventing sarcopenia. Second, instead of their immune systems becoming senescent, their level of immunity was equal to that of 30 year-olds. I suspect the diverse physical sport activities you showed, like skiing and playing hockey, have a similar effect. Pollock wrote in one of the papers: "PEOPLE DON'T STOP EXERCISING BECAUSE THEY GET OLD, THEY GET OLD BECAUSE THEY STOP EXERCISING."

NEVER give up your active hobbies (unless they are contact sports like rugby) especially if you have kids just cause u are aging... running for example keeps your body but also your mental well being ahead of the rest. i am 56 and just completed too cool personal challenges this month. 1: I walked 100kms in 17hr38minutes (total time) and 2 : I walked 20kms with 20kgs (rucking) in 3hr38mins. i would rather die on the trails than on the couch any day!!!

If you don't have any chronic illness or disability it's easy to be fit as them at their age. I see that in elderly people in my family, everybody is fit until some chronic disease occurs, or eyesight and hearing worsens. There's nothing to change about, it's pure random how old you get.

No I don't agree, it's your mindset about your conditions that makes the difference and how you react to them..don't believe everything the doctors tell you believe you can do anything and you will, believe you cant and you wont stay active mind and body, don't think that meds are the only answer, a strong mindset helps more than you will ever know

At the beginning of this video, a man at a fancy resort said it doesn't matter how much money you have, it's what activities you choose to do. True, it's important to stay active, but money does absolutely make a difference when it comes to the quality of health. It takes more than just physical activity to stay healthy these days, and it sure would be fun to be able to afford a membership at a fancy gym or class or afford a trainer, and a competent doctor. Our current traditional system caters to money, not people first. Some people with money may not realize this, especially if they can afford a vacation at Whistler.

Great video. Lousy negative comments but I guess that stands to reason. It must be depressing to sit and watch people live a full life if you are not making the choice to live your fullest life yourself. It doesn’t take money to go for a walk or go for a run. It just takes action. There are senior centers and most communities with low cost activities. If your income doesn’t allow for classes, invite over friends and watch a CZcams video and do yoga. Just find a hobby that makes you feel good and keep doing it. That’s all these people are doing and just because most of the people in this video May have been upper middle class, it was just meant to inspire.

I wished I'd talked to both my parents when they were in hospital/ hospice and we're in that sleep mode/ partly from meds before passing. It works if you don’t have chronical pain and illnesses. So those people are just an exemption.

Did you miss the part where the guy visited his doctor and showed his messed up spine? She commented on how his mindset is what keeps him going. It’s possible. Some people choose to move with their pain.

@@monique1235don't be smart about things you don't know or haven't been trough. Obviously the man has a level of pain that you can overcome with positive thoughts. Try my level, you won't be telling smart stuff anymore. Btw, Im an ex whole life SWAT officer used to pain, positive thinking etc. So plz stop.
