What’s So Special about the Name of Jesus? | Episode 30

  • One of the distinctive doctrines of the Oneness Pentecostal movement is baptism in the name of Jesus. Whereas other Christians groups typically baptize converts “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Apostolic Pentecostals baptize exclusively in Jesus' name. Consequently, they sometimes are referred to as the “Jesus’ Name Pentecostals” or even the “Jesus Only” movement.
    In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard explains the biblical rationale behind this emphasis on the name of Jesus. He shows how Oneness Pentecostals imitate the example of the apostles by stressing the importance of Jesus' name.
    If you want to explore this topic in greater depth, see Dr. Bernard's books "In the Name of Jesus" and "The New Birth." Both titles are available at PentecostalPublishing.com.

    It bothers me so much when I hear the name of Jesus Christ as a swear word ☹️. Jesus Christ is the one and only Jehovah God and needs to be honored.

    The Bible explicitly speaks about the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and we can clearly see that they are distinct with each other and united with each other.

    Why do we call those who are not Christian a Christian? There is no grey area, it’s truth or it’s a lie. Jesus Christ is the Truth, and to be Christ like you must have Truth.
    Apostolic is not distinctive from Christian. We are Christians, the Church of the living God.
    Not some branch in Christendom, we are Christians.
    (Also I’m not saying reject anyone, or be exclusive. I’m just writing about how many are called a Christian who definitely have not been baptized in the name of Jesus, received the gift of the Holy Ghost, or pursued God striving to live a Christ like.)

    The Lord bore the name Yeshua when he walked the Earth approximately 2,000 years ago; the name Jesus was created in translation centuries later. Are we using the correct name when we baptize people in the name of Jesus?

    If true study was given.. The Father who was Eternal,, spirit,, only a voice that Prophets and others heard,, He was Called Yahweh, Jehovah, today english LORD... that was his name in spirit.. The word became Flesh,, and was given the name Jesus 8 days after birth.. Making him the Lord Jesus, which Paul always referred him to Lord Jesus...

    This video was super helpful Bishop Bernard. I know you probably won’t see this but I want to ask a quick question.
    We had a girl at our Campus Ministry ask a question a couple weeks ago about this subject. She said “why do we use an English variation of the name of Jesus when we baptize/call on his name?”.
    My response was that it’s about the identity we invoke as we call upon his name, the faith that we have accompanied with his name. She replied, “then why does it matter what we baptize with anyways as long as we’re invoking the correct identity?”.
    I don’t think my explanation did justice and I promised I would follow up with research. This video will help with my response, but if you (or anyone else who has some insight on this) could help that would be greatly appreciated!!

      I 100% believe in Jesus’ name baptism and we had a lesson specifically on it this week that helped answer some questions, but her question was challenging for me.
      Clearly Jesus is an English variation of a Hebrew word, which I’ve always thought is completely fine. I guess I’m basically just asking for clarification on how best to explain this to someone who is fairly new to the Bible.

      In the Spanish Apostolic church they baptize in the name of El Senor JesuChristo.
      It's not invoking his identity it's SAYING the name of Jesus Christ which would be his saving name in any language.

    • @darylcox762
      @darylcox762 Před 2 lety

      Bro. Samuel Bishop Bernard quoted and expounded Colossians 3:17. What you also told her was absolutely correct, “it’s about the identity we invoke.” The Scripture teaches We should use the name of Jesus in both public and personal worship as well as in Christian ministry. The name of Jesus honors and recognizes the Father’s incarnation and revelation in Christ, Phill 2:9-11. At the heart of the matter is God’s new covenant revelation to us. And finally, it matters that we use the name of Jesus in baptism because it recognizes God in Christ and it releases the power of Christ’s shed blood to remit our sins. When the name of Jesus is invoked at baptism, it becomes our point of contact with Jesus’ blood that was shed on earth and sprinkled in heaven over 2000 years ago. Examine the following scriptures for more study, confirmation, and enlightenment: Hebrews 9:22; Acts 10:43, and Acts 2:38. God bless you.

      @sancraft8718 Před 2 lety

      What matters is the variation of your given mother tongue. Use the name Jesus in your language. I hope that helps.

    • @jajuanbrown02
      @jajuanbrown02 Před 2 lety

      Hey Brother! Those are some excellent questions and I hope that this helps.
      We know that Jesus' Hebrew name is "Yeshua", but when we look through other passages of Scripture like Mat 1:21 or Acts 2:38, we see that the name used for Jesus is "Iesous" pronounced "ee-ay-sooce", which is Greek (this is the name Brother Bernard was referring to in this clip). Even within scripture we see that using the Name of Jesus can be done within someone's respective language.
      Now as for that second question, Brother Bernard answered it in a debate much better than I can here, and if I can find the debate, I'll be sure to post it here as well. We see from Acts 19 with the disciples of John that it is possible to be baptized incorrectly, but Ephesians 4:5 tells us that there is only 1 baptism and Peter in Acts 4 tells us that the only name that has the power to save is Jesus. Brother Bernard gave this as an analogy as for why simply using titles to identify Jesus isn't the correct way even though we could only be referring to Him...
      If I were to sign a check and under the name put some adjective or another title I may hold like "Friend", "Believer" or "Brother J", you would not be able to cash that check. Even though I have complete authority over the money in my bank account and how it is used, whoever cashing that check cannot receive the payment they're trying to receive unless I include my name, "JaJuan Brown". In a similar sense, while all authority and power in Heaven and Earth belongs to Jesus, we cannot receive the payment He made for salvation using His titles alone. We still need the authority of His name.
      Another perspective of this is when a leader of a group or a nation is required to sign something. While simply saying "The President of the United States", "The Queen of England", or "The Governor or Pennsylvania" would be enough to identify the one behind the signature, there is no authority behind that title without a name.
      I hope this helps in some way. God bless and I pray for your success on your campus!
