If you get data errors and can no longer access or use your MLV files, transfer all files to an NTFS formated hard drive. The MLVs will be accessible again.
I've realized that my canon t4i is kind of useless without magic lantern
+Alex All of Canon dslr's are kind of useless, even D1x mark II doesn't have features which you can get in Sony a6300. I feel some day I will switch from 70d to Sony.

+Alex Yes I use ML in my 60d. But I don't trust it :) I mean that some manufacturers are able go give professional features without 3rd party software, and another (Canon) are still affraid of something. I think that Canon wants people to buy C100.

Shiet.. I've been using ML for like 3-4 years. And I've never had any issues.
That's wild... I never lost footage with ML.
I used Magic Lantern for a 5 hour conference (boring but a great test) I had it set for magic zoom (full screen), restart video, 64GB card and didn't miss a thing. The camera was a 6D, no overheating, no problems at all. I think you can be confident that it's essential for continuous video otherwise you would need to restart the video manually after 4 gigs and lose your mind.
How do I record 60mins seamless videos on the Canon 80D?

Interesting to hear about your thoughts with ML. I had some issues with it when I first tried it years ago, but since then it's been pretty stable on my old t2i. I couldn't imagine shooting video with a Canon DSLR anymore without it. Even though I've switched to Panasonics and I'm looking at the Sony line.
+DVZN Media Yeah, it really was helpful and I always shot with ML even when I used other people's DSLRs. I would use my ML enabled cards. But since losing footage from two different situations, it just isn't worth it. The move to the Sony A7Sii gave me back all of the benefits of ML that I didn't have with my Canon 5DMkiii. I think with camera updates this year, there will be no need for ML with anything.
I'm new to the scene here... does the A7sii have a camera mode similar to shooting ML RAW?
Ryan Russo no, but there is SLOG which gives you more flexibility in grading. It's not as good as raw, but we're talking 14-15 stops vs maybe 9-10 on the canons. Now, if someone would hack the mark IV to shoot raw ... I'd be a buyer in an instant

ThePhotonHD Of course. It runs off a SD card so use a blank card and there will be no Magic Lantern features enabled.
Resolution and dynamic range matters. I shot for years with 5D mk II raw, and as beautiful as the image is that comes out of it, the newer cameras shooting 4K with 4-5 stops more of dynamic range are just killing it out of the existence. Sad truth, I still love to shoot raw but I find it more often than not to be challenging to keep shooting like that.

Don't know if your an Apple user 100% or not but for cameras that use NFC and allow unadulterated transfers Canon 5D Mark IV for example an Android phone with NFC will scoop the files astonishingly fast allowing you to backup to Google drive for later editing, handy for same day editing if you need to process later at your leisure and produce a more refined final product or for portfolio.

You can use every lens that canon has with native compatibility with the A7r ii (no other a7 will do that, just that version)
Great video Grieg, I've had this incident happen before on footage that
can't ever be repeated and was so disappointed. How ever, i have read in
many places that this happens when you take the memory/battery out
before the red reading/writing LED goes off, or even turning off/on the
camera before the the LED goes off. Also i've had it happen on CF and SD
cards when it was not safely removed from windows PCs. Some times it
also happens when used often with MAC machines "i have no idea why" and
for no reason.
And since i've been looking after these points, i've never had any problems with ML at all. Hope this helps !
After looking at several videos with pros and cons about ML, I have decided through a gut instinct not to use it, just to many things can go REALLY wrong. Shit, all I wanted was a shutter angle of 1/48. Ah well, 50 is near enough. Oh and what's the backing track on this video called?

I have sony A58 witch I buy in 2012. The funcions of videos are amazing: focus peaking inside stedy shoot etc, but skin colors are red. Canon skin is better I think. So I try to change it in HSL where I take red color to orange side, and desatureted litttel bit and it's like canon color now. Now I have Sony A6000 and it's work's.

Adams , I usually give three video tracks- wedding video (highlights), wedding day from capture the bride (it is our tradition and people likes it) and the ceremony (it is both going like 40min.) and the banquets (above 2 hours). What movies do you give the client and how long they usually lasts in time? and what advices u can give? thanks
Great information! I'm also using ML with 6D and 5D MK III and I'm starting to get a little worried after your incidents. Personally, I had no major problems with it. I also have one question, why would you transcode the media as at least the Canon MOV files are easy to edit on a decent computer.

may be one the reason might have had an experience with caz of the memory cards itself you were using. so ML is still great. Sony just an option to choose from.

the a7s doesn't come with an internal intervalometer right?..
On the canon 6D magic lantern can do a lot of damage beware, not just lost data on sd cards but the boot caused the camera to not even turn on...dam canon all I wanted was the intervalometer
+JayTube I didn't have any issues with it on a 6D.
+canturgan mine worked for a bit but after trying raw video it heated up and wouldn't turn back on for 20mins then keep acting crazy until I did complete uninstall. But with magic lantern nightly builds you never know. Not worth the risk if you're a professional

ThePhotonHD Yes, the software is on the card, when you put a non Magic Lantern card in it reverts back to normal.
You can lose data anytime when you take your sd card out and put it back in it can be caused for a lot of situations that i will not mention here but is not because magiclantern ,choose your words after some better research boi

MAGIC LANTERN SOLUTION. I had several times the same problem with Magic Lantern but then I found the problem. When you format the SD Card in Camera, Magic Lantern does something to the SD and if you record more than 4 GB without switching off the camera, when you will turn on the camera again the camera won't be able to read the SD. You can try this solution, maybe it works!
So avoid recording more than 4GB without switching off the camara?
Doesn't Canon switch off automatically when the 4GB limit is reached (mine does, but I'm not using ML)? Or does ML allow you to ignore the limit? If so, formatting the SD with something else then FAT would be the way to go - but all instructions so far strongly suggest to do the formatting with the camera (which seems to give you FAT) ...?
I think the FAT file system has a file limit size of 4GB. Try to format as Ex-FAT instead.
Any suggestions regarding audio, I am currently using a separate audio device on top of my canon 60d device, the internal audio is horrible and I'm having to match the audio to the video which takes time and it's a hassle. I rather have great audio in the camera, any suggestions regarding a device i can purchase that does that or maybe the Sony 7s does that do that?

Alejandro Garcia The card became unreadable. I had issues with 64gb Sandisk cards on my t3i. I was able to restore the video files. I switched to 32gbs and have had no data loss in 5 years. No damage to the camera- ML is stable and well-tested.
Should I buy a6300 or a7s2？

+starshipvelcro Also, in regards to the A6300. I just got mine the other week and it definitely overheats while recording 4K internally. Mine is after 26-29 minutes...long enough for most ceremonies but not all. I'm considering a 4K Atomos recorder...because other than that the camera is amazing. (1080P is a bit soft)

If you read under Important Notes:
Important notes
If you have a bootable SD card and have the BOOTDISK flag set in the camera (which the installer does), and you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BIN file on the card the camera WILL NOT BOOT! It will hang and not wake up until the battery is removed.
If you encounter a locked up camera, quickly remove the battery.
When in doubt, remove the battery and reboot.
And, remember that this software can damage or destroy your camera.
Made me think twice before installing this on my camera.

If you format a card on your computer it won't have the bootflag or code. The camera will work without ML. Put in a ML card and it will work with ML. Very simple.
I had the same issue Craig did with the t3i and Sandisk extreme 64gb cards. No issues in 5 years with 32gb cards.
Indeed, ML is quite more complicated than CHDK for PowerShots. You say "BOOTDISK flag set in the camera" - does that mean ML actually changes something on the camera firmware itself? If yes, then screw all this crap.
You say you would list the various links in the video description for your cart, and also for some of your other videos, although I NEVER see those links in the description. Not cool dude. Atleast do as you say in the video or dont say in the video at all

why don't you go complain to canon since they sell you a 1000 dollar camera with blocked features and the community has to develop a code to unlock more options.... i hope everybody switches to sony canon is sleeping on their money
