It's been a while, but we are finally circling back around to pick up some birds. Farfetch'd was a monster, but can it have some competition?
In today's generation 1 solo challenge, we look at Pidgeot. We'll start by breaking down a live stream I did a while ago then get to the optimized run. This is a slight changeup so let me know what you think about it!

►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

Your channel definitely needs more love. Love the music backdrops you have, the dedication to runs, and your overall grind. Hopefully you can eventually do this full time and become even greater. In tombstoner, we trust.
I’ve done a lot of backend work to make things more polished. It would be cool to do this full time but it’s not realistic. That’s why I gotta keep the school grind going irl lol.
It's too oversaturated at this point.
I love blind runs. I feel like it a big part of how we get ingratiated with certain aspects of these games as a community. The Pokémon solo community has a lot of the same lingo, inside jokes, etc but blind runs are where we learn about things like the Self destructing hiker, the chandler with the two ghastly, the overpowered Raticate. I feel a sense of belonging learning more about it. Plus unless it causes extra unnecessary work or you don’t like the outcome I’m always down for longer Pokémon solo run content these they’re perfect for me. I could watch them and listen to you and your endearing delightful commentary all day.
Oh even with a blind run we’re still doing at least 3 runs. You just can’t judge a Pokémon accurate after one time. I like the idea of streaming some blind runs, linking it for peeps that want it and then having the full optimized run for a video but idk what the future holds.

The blind run was better than I anticipated. Since flying types weren't very good in gen 1 I expected a much greater time and resets for Pidgeot's blind run. So good job Pidgeot on both the blind and optimized runs, especially the optimized one also real one.
It was much better than anticipated. I was surprised I didn't run into more problems so I was excited to get it optimized.
I personally enjoy seeing your optimised runs - other channels focus on the blind runs. It was interesting to see how your blind run informed your optimisation this time, though. Thanks for the entertaining content as always!
I’d say it’s about 90/10 on optimized runs. You’ll see another blind run soon but mostly it’s all optimized.
I really like seeing the blind runs! It adds a lot of context for the optimized run, and it's where you find out about goofy stuff like "here's this one totally ordinary trainer that you haven't thought about since you were 10, but we have to spend a lot of time planning around her for this Pokemon". Even if you don't want to dedicate a ton of time to recording/editing those into the videos (which, fair), I still think it'd be cool if you talked more about the blind run results while you showed the optimized run.
I always try to emphasize the problems, struggles, and what not. Even on recent videos I'll show a fight that looks easy in the optimize run but go over why it isn't and the planning that went into it along with the things that you have to look out for! I try to never just do 'play by play' without adding something else in if I can help it.
Red and Blue's Gyarados, Mewtwo and Venusaur sprites are sheer perfection.
So glad Farfetched still holding that leek crown. It’s my second favorite Pokémon. The stalk that it bears ain’t just for show

So many memories of playing with Pidgeot as a kid... I just liked the guy so I never noticed that he was not that good lol, and the runs used to be harder than expected. Thanks for the memories, keep the good work man. Tombstoner for you

Ha, there is dedication but it's software that reads the RAM of the game in real time so we can see stat changes/badge boost/etc!
Nice to see Pidgeot do a little better than I expected. I do think still that Dodrio is going be the one to compete with Farfetch’d.

My sixth birthday I got a Pokémon yellow and a see through purple game boy.
I caught the lvl 9 pigeotto in the forest, and evolved it into a Pigeot, he was most definitely on my original champion squad.

The score sounds about right. All the gen 1 birds are pretty solid, even without a flying-type Gust.
I expected some alright runs where it was like 75ish but a mid 80s was better than I thought.
The sand attack thing is just so infuriating if you know the numbers. I get hitting once or twice through dumb luck but the computer knows what it’s doing lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think everyone who plays a reasonable amount of Pokemon has their stories to tell about inaccuracy. I once missed six Will-O-Wisps in a row, for example.
Pretty low odds. I know it’s possible but it just feels fishy sometimes lol. No doubt about it.

This was another fun run to watch. The format with the blind run and then the optimized highlights was great!
I’ve done it several times but it just takes longer to edit. Jynx comes to mind from last year.
I definitely agree that I like the repeat runs when it comes to solo challenges. That chance for refinement and the ability to see the huge improvements that come from proper strategy and routing really for me make it a very fulfilling viewer experience. It also gives a lot less incentive to do what is probably my least favorite form of strategy with single IGT runs which is where you get to a hard fight and you bash your head against the wall 20 times until the luck pans out your way and you move on. The ability to be more flexible without feeling like you're punishing the Pokemon and explore alternative strategies dealing with that impulse really makes videos like this very enjoyable.

I’d say bashing isn’t something I even think about anymore. Sometimes it rarely happens but in theory I go for what I feel like at minimum it’ll be a 60-70% win rate. There’s always a fine line of risk and consistency but I’ll always show the numbers and what not. In game time without showing the resets just doesn’t really give you the whole picture.

@@KainaX122 wow i thought that Normal types could always learn most of the special moves. The normal/Flying types we get 5 of every generation I guess are the exception. Thought they at least could learn Psychic 😂
The Pidgeot thumbnail looks awesome. Also lacking a badge boosting move besides Agi I'm surprised how much time it ended up saving simply with good routing. Great runs.

Real one! Personally I'm not a big fan of this format, I'd like to just be seeing the final, polished attempt. But I'm going to watch any videos you release regardless of format, so you do you.

As a kid, I believed that gust blew the sand attack away. I’m still not convinced I was wrong.

Great video, I'm honestly surprised it wasn't a bit faster. I guess it just felt like a much stronger pokemon as a kid.

I think the blind run first is good to see the progression in the time to finish, but doing it sparely more important for you. To be honest, i thought pidgeot would struggle way more so i agree it's a good run

real one! i like seeing how much time gets eliminated from the first one to the optimized run, but since that's tons of extra work i think stating the time difference or having a quick recap is totally fine. anyway i'm surprised how close pigeot got to farfetch'd! happy for him hahaha
I worked really hard to get it that close. Perhaps this would have been slower if I wasn’t going for the Farfetch’d time but I’m happy with this overall.

Some runs need it, some don't. It's nice to have the option from time to time. I feel like far too many channels go for the sloppy run first so I like a changeup from time to time.

Part of the reason the tier formula works so well for me is that I’ve plateaued in terms of skill and I think I play all the modern (post Abra) runs really well.

To answer the question at the end, I did prefer the blind run first format!
I do it from time to time but the problem is that it makes the process so much slower. We’ll see going forward how I feel.

Shame that Pidgeot wasn't as good as it should have been. I really like it, but man Gen 1 did it no favors. These videos are always great to watch, so you're a real1 Matt
No real coverage or anything like hidden power to help it over it's early humps but it was pretty solid all things considered! I like the runs that have a clear drawback and runs in the 85-75 range are among my favorites to route.
I've got serious respect for Pidgeot and its lesser forms. They are usually the first Pokemon I catch in Kanto, and they tend to stick by me for a good chunk of the game, maybe even the whole way through. While I do prefer Farfetch'd, I still feel like Pidgeot is a #realone.
Also, two side notes. One, I think it's an unspoken fact that somehow, someway, anyone who plays on a stream performs worse than normal. I've been there. An old streamer buddy of mine's been there. It just feels like it's universal. Two, what were some of those songs with certain gym leaders like Brock and Surge? Are they from Battle Tower in Crystal (never got there so never heard it), unused tracks, from a ROM hack or something else entirely? :o
Those are from the Pokemon Coral ost! It's a ROM hack and I've been into their music a lot.

I know Pidgeot is an evolution of a early route gen 1 Pokemon but that speed stat being slower than say Magmar or Primeape feels weird, even if I accept Speed can be mental as well
It’s hard to look at stats relative to the lore/other Pokémon. You’ll start getting weird inconsistencies or things that make no sense. I’ve just learned to compare them to nothing and it’s made it more enjoyable lol.

I haven't transitioned to gen 3 yet. I have like one run but I've only gotten good at gen 1 this past year and I'm trying to get gen 2 to that level.

I think Farfetch'd will remain king, but have a feeling that Dodrio might be easier than Pidgeot... Could be very wrong though.

Yea my early predictions before I even look at the others is the Fearow will be similar to this and Dodrio will have a chance but might fall short. We might have 4 runs within a couple of points of each other.

I'm not sure when we'll see a mega but Pidgeot likely won't be the first, haha. It's cool, but it's no mega Charizard X or anything.

Thanks! I worked pretty hard on those to a mixed signal at first but I do think matching the tier cards with other cards thematically makes the most sense.

That pokemon gold blastoise sprite is amazing, the red, blue and yellow blastoise sprites were awful, though the pokemon green sprite is very good, its very unfortunate how lots of pokemon were made worse when the games were released outside of japan, though some sprites are bette in rb.
Not many but there are some! A lot of gen 1 sprites are more nostalgia but yellow outclasses most.
Yeah, because most of us can't detach the memory of Dux from the powerhouse of Swords Dance plus Gen 1 Badge Boost Glitch. I know I'm one of those people. Sure, Farfetch'd in a solo run is great, but it's still not Pidgeot, which holds a special place in our hearts. Also, still no shoutout! *cries and drinks sodie pop to drown the pain*
Ironically Farfetchd didn’t need the glitch too much and all the other birds abuse it more with agility! I don’t have a horse in the race (or bird) and I try to always bring unbiased runs to the table.
As a general rule, asking for a shoutout isn’t always the best tactic but these past few months I really have to prioritize the members/patreons. They do a lot for support!

I know you get sky attack right before the elite 4 and you have to reset the boulders but I think it would be worth it on a Pokémon like the pidgy line

It’s about the same reason you never see much solar beam despite it being overall better than mega drain. You just take extra hits and get it so late.
I never found a use of it saving any significant time but I have looked at it. It’s just never been the piece of the puzzle that solved a run yet but maybe one day.

It's unique later but in gen 1 it's just an 80 base power move with no effects. You'll get the much superior and more useful bodyslam earlier!

a hack gives pidgeot an abillity called majestic bird which raises it's special attack by 1.5 times

I've thought about megas in general but Pidgeot would definitely not be the first choice lol. Having ultimately a similar moveset and being marginally better just due to having boosted stats doesn't sound like the most engaging thing off the top of my head.

I still hold that wing attack is better than fly especially in gen 1 where there are no hold items . In gen 2 and on with leftovers it’s good.
2 wing attacks are 100 percent accurate and have 2 chances to crit.
Fly is only good in gen 1 for some niche invulnerability like explosion or Mabe a poor man’s protect. It does have utility that might save you seconds instead of having to Catching a hm fly slave but still that’s not that much of a savings. In fact it’s a two turn move that costs time in the long run
Yea technically it’s the same but it’s whether you value the defensive nature of being invulnerable versus two chances at a crit. It’s really close though but wing attack has higher accuracy.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 rigjt but in gen 1 the opponents pp is infinite and only a few Pokémon know explosion. So you can’t pp stall and nobody in the elite 4 has explosion :(
You aren’t thinking about it right. It’s like using two wing attacks but one turn you can’t be damaged whereas you’d be hit twice with wing attack.
That’s the defensive capabilities I mean. Like if something takes 2 wing attacks or 1 fly, you avoid the damage you would have taken if you went wing attack. Some Pokémon value not being hit more.

It all depends on the run. But you can save a lot of time skipping the flyer and save a good bit of menuing with the choice alone!

No Swift? I used that move as a upgrade from Quick Attack, but I see why you don’t need it, sweeeeet double edge 😅
Yea you get access to swift at the same time as double edge and the extra 60 effective power outweighs the recoil damage by a ton.

Pulling for Farfetchd, hes my favorite. I never understood the Dodrio and Fearow are best normal flyers sentiment. Farfetchd having access to swords dance and it getting bonus xp from being a trade put it in top tier flyers. Its only real competition in gen 1 for flyers is Charizard in Yellow and legendary birds but they dont count.
Nothing would get extra trade exp in a solo run.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 yes I'm aware of that, it's really the only factor making the comparison between the normal flyers competitive
I think Swords Dance is fair. Charizard in R/B is better than in Yellow for sure but I'll cover that in video soon but in the blanket rules of a solo run, Farfetchd being an in game trade just doesn't even factor in at all. It's the top of the normal/flying Pokemon so far, but Dodrio might have something to say.

Which version is this? The title says red and blue but the sprites look different, like yellow maybe?
It’s just red. I used the Space World 1997 demo sprites, increased the back sprite pixel range, and put in yellow’s gbc color pallet but mechanically it’s just the standard red experience.

Oh yea, I have a few versions I tinker with to keep it fresh. The vanilla sprites don’t bother me a ton but I have grown to hate the OG red pallet. It’s so washed out and bland.

@@redsnorlax1945 Nah, there's nothing equal to upping your attack by 300%. Badge boost glitch is alright but it's only 12.5% a pop and helps more with speed rather than already being fast and just using agility to get 3 measly badge boosts. It'll be close, but agility is by far the weakest badge boosting move in the game.

Farfetched is the best normal flying type pokemon in a solo challenge. Its the most balanced even though it has the lower base stat compared to pidgeot, fearow and dodrio. Pigeot and Fearow are basically the same except fearow will have slightly higher attack and has drill peck. Dodrio is better for a niche flyer on a balanced team but its a glass cannon that doesn't really vibe below level 30 but then it becomes kinda op at that point. I always used farfetched as a kid because of cut and fly and with swords dance and slash or agility depending on how you use it makes it a more versatile pivot than dodrio in my opinion. Swords dance and agility make farfetched a broken mon, especially getting swords dance at lv 25. Move pools are everything in a solo challenge and pokemon you find later in the game do not fair well at lower levels. Gen 1 is fun. If your having fun then so will your viewers and i did. King don’t do the blind play though just do the optimized play through. Only because it takes a long time to edit and I’d rather you have more time to yourself and to pump out more content.
I just kinda do what I feel. Some runs need it, some don’t. At this point I’m just doing school work and Starfield in my spare time lol.

That doesn’t make sense. This is ‘how fast’ as in a speedrun. Not ‘can you’. A little child could beat the game with one Pokémon, but it takes some finesse and skill to do it at a precise level.
