  • The Clemson is the T4 seal clubber that you always wanted. With six barrels pointed downrange at any given time and four torpedo tube launchers in a maneuverable platform, you get one heck of a gunboat with the ability to blatantly be aggressive (there is that term again! :D) without actually risking much due. This ship is a favorite among the clubbers for a reason! Her only real weakness is the lack of AA... that's not much of a weakness IMO!

    I have the Nicholas which I think is the next tier up. It is a good torp ship too which I like. I think DD's should torp more than they shoot guns. Often after I torp I kite away for a bit, then come back because once you fire your guns or torps, usually all hell breaks loose and every ship in the area starts to shoot at you. Best thing then you can do is hide behind an island or kite out of detection for a bit, at least that is how I've been playing. I don't know how you guys shoot your guns and no one shoots back at you. A round or two from a cruiser or BB and you are sunk in a dd because they lack armor, at least that is my opinion. Nice game, I gave you a thumbs up, and wish you smooth sailing. Any reply or tips you have for me would be most welcome.

      A lot of it is knowing when to engage and when not to. You noticed that I was only using my guns in smoke when there were legitimate threats nearby. Watching BB turrets is a good way to know when you can charge and from what angle you can charge. Unfortunately it's not always possible to do that and in a lot of ways, these games are "cherry picked" to show the strengths and weaknesses of the ship the best I can. Some ships, like this one, are particularly easy to seal club in... a lot of fairly new players at the lower tiers.

      @@Whiskey11Gaming thanks so much for your reply. I will insure I'm in smoke prior to shooting my guns, and again watch what ship I'm shooting at. In a ship like the Swedish Vasteras you have no smoke and the torps rate of hits is terrible but it does have 7.0 concealment, but the torps are 10km as well as the guns . Since I wrote to you I now have the American VI Farragut dd, seems to be a much harder dd to get used to, and it's pretty much a gun boat as the concealment of 6.8 out weighs the torp range of 5.5 but the guns have 12.6. For the life of me, armor related, I think a cruiser would be better used like this instead of a dd. So why take a dd to a gun batter I surmise is what I'm asking? My next tier up grade will be to the British V from the British IV Wakeful, then I'll tier up the Vasteras to the VII last, as money for captain transfers only goes so far. I'll take your data and use it to my advantage, and again, thanks for your reply. I know the amount work it is replying to all that ask questions, plus the time it takes to make a video in the first place via edit etc., so again, thank you very much, and smooth sailing.

      Here is the trick to gunning with the Nicholas. Get to a flank with enemy some CAs and BBs about 7km to 8km a way. Pop a nice long line of smoke then hit the brakes and stop. Then use reverse and 1/4 throttle to scoot back and forth in the smoke line and rain HE hell down on slow BBs. Make sure to keep moving back and forth and dont forget to check your position or you will slip out of the smoke and get punished. I also recommend firing your guns in a stream instead of a salvo. With salvo fire its easy for enemies to simply blind fire between the two gun flashes and hit you. Also, keep an eye on the smoke timer or you will get caught with your pants down when the smoke dissipates and 5 very pissed off ships will gun you down.

      @@ColoradoStreaming Thanks for your reply. Sounds great to me. Since reading this I've tiered up to the Swedish Skane ( tough dd to play). However, I'll try your tactics and see how I make out. Thanks for taking the time to share.....

    My main problem with the Clemson is you get so good with it when your grinding US DDs and you decide to move up to Nicholas and hit a brick wall. You get the new tactics down eventually but holy crap its frustrating when you first make the jump.

    I dunno why anyone upgrades the torpedos on it, I always ran the stock ones on the Clemson because you can spam them which is great in knife fights. All you gain is .5km and some damage which the stock torps out DPM

    • @Whiskey11Gaming
      @Whiskey11Gaming  Před 4 lety

      I generally don't find spamming torpedoes to be overly useful in USN DD's as they tend to rely on their guns more than their torpedoes, but you bring up a good point. This is probably one of the only DD's in which this actually makes any real sense... and having a 10 point captain on Clemson makes it pretty clubby! :P

    I enjoyed the video. But if people want to see a _typical_ game for a DD at this tier they should pay attention to the friendly Isokaze. He was spotted by TWO squadrons of enemy rocket planes before 60 seconds of the game had passed. He had almost no support from his team. He spent the next 3 minutes running for his life with no chance of escape or evasion and was destroyed by aircraft 4 minutes into the game. He had little opportunity to do damage or get any combat ribbons and ended up last with 247 base xp. I'm sure some will claim the Isokaze is just a bad player and made bad choices. I'm not so sure. His game was effectively over 50 seconds into the match. Now some might say going to A unsupported was his mistake. But AA coverage is pretty short at that level. His whole team could have gone to A but if they are not within about 4 km of him they aren't going to provide cover from aircraft. Nor will they make him invisible to the rest of the enemy team. I don't think there is anything the Iso could have done to change the outcome once he was focused by both CVs. And that is the real problem at this tier with multiple CVs. Once they focus a DD his game is over and there is practically nothing one can do to change that.

    • @Whiskey11Gaming
      @Whiskey11Gaming  Před 4 lety +1

      It's a good tier to learn CV evasion tactics in. Yes, I showed a pretty "ideal" game in which I was largely left alone to attack ships on my own, but I wasn't the only target in my area until the VERY end of the match. Prior to that, I had plenty of other ships around to take some of the heat off. But yes, CV's absolutely ruin DD gameplay.

    • @robertanderson6929
      @robertanderson6929 Před 4 lety

      @@Whiskey11Gaming Yeah, I play primarily T-5 thru 7. And I have games where I'm ignored for big stretches where I assume the CVs are trying to take down BBs to up their damage numbers. I think that is what happened in your game. They spent the first 5 minutes killing a single DD so they turned their attention to big juicy targets. But it's multiple CVs that are the real problem. With a single one you can't escape but you can cost them time searching for you and it gives you a chance to find AA cover or your smoke to cooldown. When there is more than one CV they can just perma-spot you. They don't even have to attack you. As long as they can keep you spotted for their team mates then you're effectively taken out of the game. And that's sad because the average player needs to play a lot of games in those tiers if they want to advance. I use these tiers to grind credits and do dailies because T-8 takes a big hit in the credits earned. I've had lots of T-8 matches where I couldn't earn enough to pay for the stock camo.

      @@robertanderson6929 If there are 2 CVs in a game you MUST stay with the fleet in a tight AA ball. If Im playing Nicholas and Im in a 2 CV match I know my roll is much different so instead of going off to spot I will watch for the planes coming in and get myself in a good position to hit them while with the fleet. Remember, if your AA is off then the planes wont see you until they are basically right over you. Wait until they are right on top of you on the BB attack run then throw on AA, hit priority sector and Defensive AA. Then laugh as you tear those suckers to pieces and the planes have to circle around to figure out whats going on and by that time its too late.
      Always think like your enemy so a CV Captain thinks he is sending in Torp planes against a defenseless BB and gets lined up to attack but then suddenly as he lines up a pissed off DD magically appears directly below him and starts tearing his squad apart which is a nasty surprise. He then must hope to still get the torps on the BB in a suicide run or circle around to hit the new threat. Even the hesitation alone means his planes are gone. A torp or two might still hit the BB but nothing like a clean run would.
      Nicholas actually has surprisingly good AA and BB captains always appreciate the support. If it gets really hairy, throw a smoke screen around a BB and hide in it as well. Planes cant see you at all in smoke, even if your AA is popping away.

      I mean... I could throw my 19 point Fletcher captain on Clemson and enjoy some pure kek games too, but that's not the purpose of this How to Play series. I'm playing it from the perspective of a player who is either just starting out, or is just starting the line. That's why the captain's have relatively the same number of points as you'd have if you were carrying one captain from Sampson on up.

    • @staminalee4054
      @staminalee4054 Před 4 lety

      Agreed a cluber 19 point captain is a little unfair at tier 4. I'm seeing a lot of clemsons at tier 4 I just wanted to point out I'm having incredible success with my Shenyang. I sold my clemson because my Shenyang has better success. I figured out you use those incredible smokes to hide in while all those friendly planes spot for you and at 39 knots you can zip around the battlefield. The gun ballistics are incredible on Shenyang 1800 HE damage with flat laser fast trajectory.

    He made a comment about CVs and planes and said something about not dying from excessive torpedo or dive bombing??? Not the smartest comment, as everyone knows that ROCKET PLANES are the biggest threat to DDs, by far!!!
