- I've left the UK for good. Now that I'm in Asia, do I care about the UK anymore? What do you think? These are my own personal opinions and you may not agree with them.

So true- I haven't watched or read the daily news for years. Of cause I follow important events, but I find that I never have to watch the news for that.
Not watched the news properly since 2006 - only reports what theywant you to know/see + twist the truth also
I was an avid follower of politics and current affairs but decided to stop watching or listening to the news and never reading a paper. The outcome was less stress and feeling more happy than ever

This is very true if you make the effort to learn local language culture and traditions you are more likely to get smiles and be accepted into local Thai society. Otherwise you will always be on the outside. As local people wont change for you you have to change and adapt to their style

For someone that hasnt sold up, hasnt got a retirement visa, doesnt have a thai bank account but does have a return ticket and a tourist visa. That doesnt sound like someone who has retired abroad.

One of the best pieces of advise I've ever received was "don't watch the news in the morning". I used to turn on the TV every morning for what I called "background noise" as I got ready for work. What I didn't realize was each morning I was starting my day by being told what to be mad about that day. Then I would carry that aggravation with me throughout the day. Once that habit was broken I found that my spirits were much lighter and days less stressful. Now living abroad it's much easier to insulate myself from news and issues I have no control over.

I am to disagree with you Eddie and I admire what you doing, but the UK is the UK, all western countries have their own set of problems and we have our own. You are currently experiencing the whole matter of making the Money in the West and you are spending in the East. They are plenty of amazing things in this country. You are one of the lucky few who has gained financial independence and have the opportunity to travel and live abroad. Should be proud of where you are and the opportunities you were given whilst you lived in this great, free Country.
Most western countries have gone woke, with illegal immigration pouring across the borders. You sir, made an excellent decision to make a move abroad. Soon I will join you in South East Asia, where I will enjoy the culture and tropical beaches until my time comes to leave this world behind.

I love Thailand but also thank the uk for giving me the opportunities many asian people would love to have . Poverty in asia is really bad and the pension is terrible. Look at all the wars and trouble in the world we are lucky to have been born in the uk .
Best thing to do when we leave to move abroad is to put everything to bed back home and enjoy where you are for what it is✌️

I retire to Thailand later this year, but I have just returned from 2.5 months there and the UK (Scotland in particular) is just depressing me. And it’s everything - the weather, the cost of living, the poor infrastructure, politics, crime rates, healthcare etc. So I’m with you Eddie, when I leave later this year I won’t look back at all. And BTW, if you walked around London with your phone on a stick, it would get stolen!

I retired in Thailand eight years ago but I am still loyal to ALL the English-speaking countries. I am from the USA but I am concerned about the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand. etc. I don't think an honest man can forsake the laws and customs of his home country. The English-speaking countries have much to be proud of.
Nothing is wrong with your countries. Try growing up in countries like third world places Laos, Philippines, etc you will appreciate what you have.

Hello Eddy, I'm from the USA and I can understand exactly what you're saying. It's gotten to where watching the news just raises my blood pressure. If I last long enough,I'll be living somewhere close to you in se Asia and my concern for the USA will decline.
There is no life in the UK, it is only go to work and go home. Terrible weather, terrible food, high taxes, everything is expensive. The majority of Brits are stuck in a loop where they think owning a property is the key to life in the UK. They think other countries are "poor" and that the UK is the best country in the world.

The UK is one of the most civilized countries on earth. I seldom encounter a Brit who has anything positive to say about the UK. This is a mystery to me. Britain has led the world in so many ways that it's difficult for this American to understand the negative attitudes.
@@kev12364 in my country our salaries are just a fraction of what you make and way more expensive cost of living. Our passport isn't nearly as powerful to travel. I am amazed at how many people complain about life back home. They have it way better than 90% of the world.
In order to wash your hands on a country you would need to not have Family and Friends there or and not depend on assets and investments, pensions etc. Otherwise, everything happening there could effect you. An economic collapse, house price crash and future policy where they don't pay state pension to people living overseas could affect you. These things are unlikely to happen but if the UK was to end up like Argentina, it definitely would....
Should not pay state pension to people living abroad as that just weakens the economy of that country as does anyone earning money in one country then leaving with that money and putting into another country I’m not judging people that do it just stating the problem

@@alanarmitage Nah ... it's a pension that someone has earned after a lifetime of paying taxes. Certainly any additional pension bonuses such as power subsidies could b cancelled.
You are completely entitled to your option and I respect that and my opinion I’m sure you will respect. All I will say is you have to be a little respectful because while the sun is shining beers are flowing the journey your on is wonderful and I get that . But life can change and the U.K. could be the epicentre of your world one day where you need to return and maybe need assistant help . @@Phucket24 Not necessary for most things. I've had 2 cancer surgeries and follow up care for less than $3000. Why go wait in line back home when I can get treated immediately in Thailand?
Hope you make a full recovery👍 hospitals and treatment imo is top notch in Thailand. Even if Eddie went back home for treatment he has paid into it all his life. Even if you have a UK pension and live in Thailand you still pay contributions every week into the NHS. People always say free lhealthcare it's not free we pay for it.
Uk has had its day only down hill from here. Sad to say but true.
They used to say that in the 1970s as well, things changed and improved, not saying that will happen again but you have to try and keep positive!

I agree and we only have ourselves to blame. We voted for the same two parties over and over and 10 years ago when people started sailing across the channel we complained but did nothing. Should have had men of fighting age standing on the south coast to give the new arrivals an unpleasant welcome like the men of many other nations did. .

The major advantage of Thailand is that people are tolerant, they do not feel obliged to tell people what they can and cannot do. I feel quite at home here and only occasionally does it occur to me that I stand out as not being one of them.
Imagine that; "A tolerant people". Savor it and be grateful for this rare occurrence, as most seem to have gone the way of extinction. (It mostly has to do with the country being mainly Buddhist. Sri Lankans are also kind and genuine. Mostly)

I still love England. It's the politicians and corporations that are destroying it. I wish us ordinary people would be brave enough to stand up to them. But obviously we're not. Travelling in Asia myself at the moment but I still love my country.

Kev in Thailand did indeed go back to England to die when his money ran out, I 'think' he payed out about £50.000 in Hospital fees.
Kev had no health insurance, that's why he ended up paying for his treatment, he came home to die with his family there.every country has it's problems Thailand is no exception the reasons for living there are more intangible, there are more positives than negatives in Thailand.

I don’t think that you living in SEA now is the reason for the change in interest. I reckon it is something that comes with age and in particular retirement. My old man when he retired went from being an avid newspaper and news follower to not caring about news as there is nothing you can do to change it. I retired a couple of years ago in my country and also don’t really care as it is all out of my control. I just live my life as well as I can and worry about the things that I can have an impact on. I especially don’t know why anyone living in a foreign country would give a shit about what is happening back home. Good on you Ed and enjoy what you have.

You did the right thing. Follow your heart and you wont go wrong. I left 12 years ago. Always knew the country was going to die a slow death. Im a child of the 70's and i can tell you working class back then make todays working class look like vagrants. We didn't have much but we had enough not just to feed a family of 7 but left overs for the dog and anyone who dropped in. Now a tin of beans in the UK is 99 pence and people cant even afford it not because its expensive but because the income doesn't support the cost of living. There wasn't a food bank in sight when i was growing up and your going back 50 plus years . Britain's best is behind it and its the titanic of all countries and i decided to jump ship and swim to better shores than go down with it. My friend is being evicted and the council have told him they can offer him a sleeping bag. Britain should be ashamed. I still have sentimental memories about that country when i was growing up but those days are long gone and the values are never coming back. Britain lives in the past and enjoys watching the poor get poorer. I'm no royalist but i think even Harry and Meghan leaving was the start of the tornado that's heading to the UK. Leaving Europe was the biggest mistake. I feel sorry for the people trapped there now.

I have friends in the U.K. who find it puzzling when I, as an American who loves what was Great Brittan as much as they, say I am as heartbroken as they are to see where it's ended-up. That being the case, here in America's capital of weird and woke (Portland Oregon), while it's seems even more hopeless and heartbreaking, I have less sympathy or lament for this place than I do for friends in the U.K. and the U.K. as well perhaps like you this place no longer holds anything meaningful and vacating seems the best option for my well-being. In a way it’s good because we go about our business and we have this idea that everything is rosie. it's totally ok to feel this way Eddy. By my own experience I can tell you that feelings start to change once you start to understand the language of the country you're living in. When those tourist vibes change into daily routine that's when things get more clear whether or not you're in the right place. Another thing that could matter is if the country you're choosing to live in is still developing and you may realise after a few years that this is not the country anymore that it was when you decided to move there. I wish you all the best and that things turn out the way that you will feel comfortable. Cheers
Good advice I plan to move to Thailand next year but despite many trips I know living there will be a totally different experience and until you have actually done it you cannot predict whether it was the right move. Sometimes you just have to take a risk but always have a plan B.

Spot on, totally agree. I know for example in Thailand they have big issues around illegal immigration and youth unemployment, my suspicion is that the 50/60 year old Thais are saying exactly the same thing and how they would dream of living in the UK. Maybe.

I spent 10 years in the Middle East and Africa before moving to Indonesia where I've been for over 25 years but I still care about the UK.
I grew up in Catford, SE London at a time when Britain was still a power to be reckoned with and watched that town change from a safe town full of mostly very decent, hardworking people into a multicultural shithole. Not surprisingly, the more it came to look like the Third World the more it became Third World and I can't bring myself to go there whenever I make a visit because it's simply too depressing.
But, while I could never again live in a big city in the UK, I don't rule out going back at some stage and living in a rural area. In all honesty though unless there's a major overhaul in British politics the country will sink even further down the pan and I won't be going back to stay
You picked a good place to live. I left the UK in 1979 worked around the Middle East and Africa. Been in Indonesia now for 42 years. Good weather and surrounded by beautiful golf courses
@@michaelblack2334 Yep, I think we both chose very wisely. I couldn't have retired at 49 if I'd stayed in the UK. When I contrast my life with my brother, a teacher in the UK, I realise how lucky I am. He lives in a small house in London that cost an arm and a leg and will have to work until he's 67 to get his pension. Meanwhile, I just bought a villa in Central Java with a view of sawah and a volcano but just a 5-minute drive from a city centre for £70k.
I've got a beautiful wife who I've been happily married to for 23 years, she has a great family, the food here is fantastic, the climate great, there are fascinating places to visit, and I've never had any safety, security or crime issues. We've just got to hope that the election passes off safely

There’s a lot of negative stuff about UK. True it has its problems. That said I’ve travelled fairly widely and it’s where I feel at home. As much as folk going to these countries feel about their adopted home. You are always a foreigner unless you take up citizenship.

Strictly it's not legal to access NHS for free as a non-resident citizen, but in reality they don't check because there are so many illegal immigrants using it. As someone who's presumably paid tax and national insurance for several decades, Eddie has far more moral justification for using it than some health tourist or illegal fresh off the boat.

I’m in California, the heart of Wokeness. But we still have the best weather and topography in the world. My mental trick for surviving here, only concern myself with the small space Im occupying at the moment. Which is pretty good.

Good luck to you Eddie, and you have done the right thing in getting out of the UK. I felt the same way in 2002 and emigrated, but due to personal family matters, I had to return here in 2018. I am older than yourself, but if I was your age or younger, I would not hesitate in getting out of England. The only concern I had when I was abroad was for family, and really that is why I had to return and am staying here now. I am hoping personal circumstances change later this year, and I can leave this country which politicians from all parties have ruined.

Eddy I am much of the same mind as you, especially insofar as illegal immigration is concerned. I have visited Thailand and other countries in the far east over the past 30 years. My big disagreement with your views concerns the British police. I am a police pensioner having served protecting the people of London for 37 years. You have a very bad case of tarring all with the same brush. The vast majority of colleagues I worked with did it for the good of the community, certainly not for the salary. Who else would leave their house & family every day knowing there was a good chance of being abused, insulted and especially injured by people who 50 years ago would have been in asylums away from the general public. The British way now is 'care in the community' that doesn't work! There are mad people and bad people walking amongst us, Britain is no longer a safe country. I have too much to say on this subject I could write a book but all I would say is please don't tar all police or busies as you regionally call them with your contaminated brush. Every one is a DIFFERENT human being. By the way the perpetrator of the recent attack on the woman and her two children, illegally entered the UK in the back of a truck, claimed and was refused asylum twice but the third time was granted leave to stay and look what the consequences of that ill informed, misguided decision produced. These soft lefty people are also what the police are forced to deal with.
A few years ago when the London taxi trade was licensed under the metropolitan police they always gave us a fair crack of the whip a bollocking rather than a nick regarding a motoring offence i think they new what kind of pressure we all were under i have much respect for that, but i think the police nowadays only care if there is a major incident not your every day run of the mill stuff, i bet you was a decent copper in your day, thank you for your serice.

Been overseas for 21years now.
Canada, Thailand and Cambodia now for 19 years. I am nowhere near retirement and work a normal workweek. Apart from family, and the yearly 2 week visit I dont really miss anything from Ireland. I have a much better quality of life here. And yes..the weather is a huge bonus! I go back to Ireland for 2 weeks during the summer..it makes me appreciate my life here.

A lot of home truths, but you will get home sick after about 9 months, you may not miss Britain but you will miss the squeaky door as we all do.
I retired to Thailand in August 2022 at age 55. Do I feel homesick? Not a chance. Only one regret: I should've done this YEARS ago.
One thing to consider, your views are from a country where you lived 50 years and speak the language. The cohorts therefore aren’t the same, Thailand will have its issues just the same, you just aren’t exposed to them in the same way as you don’t live there, speak the language, part of the culture. My suspicion, having family in many parts of the world is that everyone around our age all feel roughly the same about our home countries as we don’t adapt to change so well later in life. So, not disagreeing with any of this but I try to also remain balanced as I know every country has its issues, we just aren’t part of them so it’s easy to assume it’s better elsewhere.
Example, if I speak to my kids about the UK they don’t complain about the issues that I do, in fact, they say the positive things that I did also when I was their age. Therefore, my suspicion is that our age is linked with many of these negative feelings about change.
Put it this way, if we were Thai, lived there all our lives and were in our 50s I’m pretty sure we’d be having similar conversations about how Thailand is changing and it’s not the same.
I guess my point is that as I age I try to adapt, it’s not easy but I try.
I’d be super interested to hear the views on Thailand in 20 years when you speak the language, have citizenship, have Thai friends, maybe family, more engrained in the culture etc, maybe you’ll have similar views also on Thailand and about how it’s changing.

I've been visiting Thailand since 2011 and retired here in 2022.
I don't hear many 50-something Thais complaining about the (western and Oz ) farangs, by saying, "I wish these foreign visitors would go home, and take the MILLIONS of Baht they spend with them".
The difference between migrants to Thailand, and the immigrants to the UK is that I'm not a drain on the welfare system here, whereas the small boaters that arrive have nothing and are given many, many handouts: housing, clothes, health care etc etc etc
@@SoybooCow westerners maybe not but I’ve heard lots of comments re illegal immigration from Burma. All the way down the border into the south many Thais always commented to me about Burmese immigrants coming across illegally and working illegally.
@eddventures agree with your comment entirely. It's not just the illegal immigrants to Thailand that are unwelcome. Ask 95% of Thais what they think of visa-holding tourists from a 'certain high-populous country', just to the west of Bangladesh...🤣

All of your criticisms of Great Britain apply to many areas of the USA. I’d still like to visit the UK again, but SE Asia is my ideal choice for holidays and long-term traveling.

Can you shed some light on tax responsibilities of a YT content creator once the move is made abroad...and in particular when moving about frequently. Obviously you need to file a tax return on earnings ( sponsorships, ad revenue, superchats, subscriptions, brand deals ) when in UK as a monetised independent contractor of sorts....but is it straightforward when in Thailand for example?
I imagine it can be complex....do you need a work permit/visa ?
