DSS&A LS&I Marquette

  • This is an upgrade of some old film taken on the Marquette Iron Range and the Marquette, MI area in the late 1950's I purchased on DVD about 20 years ago. The film was silent with narration and was very dark. I enhanced the brightness/color and added appropriate steam, Alco, Baldwin and Budd RDC sounds. I also added some photo slideshows out of my slide/print collection in between clips to more fully depict the facilities and activities in this area. There are too many different sources to give full credit and in some cases they are unknown, so if anyone has a specific objection please let me know. Virtually every rail line and facility seen in this video is now gone, with the exception of the LS&I Ore Dock. The line relocation in the 1960's in the Ishpeming-Negaunee area eliminated the separate LS&I/DSS&A and CNW rights of way shown, and WC's abandonment of the former DSS&A from Diamond Jct. to Munising Jct. and the LS&I's earlier abandonment from Marquette to Munising Jct. eliminated the rest. Music is from the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack.

    This is fantastic. Can’t believe how many times I’ve watched it. The music is wonderful too. I get tired of railroads only being associated with harmonicas and banjos. This is a treasure.

    Was born and raised in Marquette. When I was young I watched the DSS&A trains whenever I had the opportunity. We lived on Fisher Street and would walk across the "Sand Bank" to the old round house. It was a great time and this video brings back truly great memories.

    I can't tell you how many times I have watched this video presentation. This is pure historic UP GOLD. I'm planning on a model RR layout in my basement for the DSS&A and these old films will be invaluable to me to get it right.

    This video brought back many memories for me. My grandfather Clyde Bucklin was the timekeeper for the DSS&A in the 1950's. My uncle Reggie Carlson was a train engineer for the LS&I. He took me on a ride when I was very young in a RS1 diesel engine and pushed iron ore cars out on the Presque Isle LS&I dock. I spent 2 weeks of almost every summer of my youth in Marquette at my grandfathers home on Fair Avenue. I remember the roundhouse, the yards, the LS&I iron ore yard at Presque Isle, the train line and yards east of Marquette. Great memories as I am a train enthusiast. Thanks for the great video.

    Photos of the DSS&A on the dock in Marquette are really hard to find let alone old 8mm Film. This is pure gold for any fan of Upper Peninsula railroading. Usually when slides come up for sale of the DSS&A they command high prices and with good reason too. I can't believe what I'm seeing here. Thank You for sharing this gem!

    @fmnut - I got to see the DSS&A Baldwin's breifly in Marquette, MI .in July of 1962. Most of the time coasting as engine only. But, once or twice, while traveling through downtown, two AS616's would erupt with a string of ore Jennie's ahead of them and shove them up the ramp to the docks .(they had their own - seperate from LS&I) And it would sound like Armegeddon!!!

    great video!! Final run of the old DSS&A Shoreliner between Ishpeming and St. Ignace was made on January 12, 1958. Old DSS&A RR passenger train and engine crews worked Marquette-Ishpeming-St. Ignace-Marquette.

      Wasn't that the end of passenger service on the line? Did mixed trains still run afterwards? It looks like a few of the films are mixed trains.

    Marvelous to see the Soo Line designed cabooses at 18:55. I did get to visit the ore docks in Duluth or Superior with my dad, a Soo Line brakeman, when I was about 8 back in 1948. Great memories brought up with this video.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 5 lety +2

      The steam sounds are from actual LS&I engines of the same class. The Grand Canyon RR had a small 2-8-0, while the Western Maryland Scenic has one of the larger ones. Some of the Alco RS-3 sounds are also from an actual LS&I engine.

      fmnut , I think you'll be happy with some up coming news about the Empire. Cliffs has been successful at refocusing their assets on domestic iron ore which definitely benefits the LS&I. I think the future of the LS&I is bright and if the Empire reopens, very bright. It must be one of the last "old fashioned " type railroads left in America

Out of service segments include L' Anse to Baraga (CN), Nestoria to Sidnaw (E&LS), and Marengo Jct. to White Pine Mine (CN). All this is to the best of my knowledge.
