  • (Lyrics in CC).
[Summary] "Tender Lady" is the start of the decline in Sarah Chen's career narrative. Prior to this, narratives about Sarah Chen focused on herself, but afterward, the focus shifted to the songwriters and producers. Whereas she used to be an independent and dedicated musician, from this point on, she became a good voice that underwent a transformation and who, though somewhat unwilling, fulfilled others' dreams. Male dominance surrounding Sarah Chen's career narrative caused long-lasting damage to her career, reputation, and character, representing a historical mistake in Mandopop history.
    --------------------------------------------
The beginning of Sarah Chen's career derailment. The literal translation of this song is "Weak Woman" or "Tender Lady," but she really meant "Strong Woman" in the song. So here we go: It is a lesser-known song from Sarah Chen's 1988 album "Heart of a Woman," her second Mandarin album jointly labeled by EMI and Rock Records. In the song, the woman refuses to cry or be sad to satisfy the man's ego after he leaves her.
"Heart of a Woman" was often described as the beginning of Sarah Chen's rise to dominance in the Mandopop scene, with songs that portrayed the independence and sensibility of empowered urban women. In hindsight, this album may also have marked the end of Chen's independent career. Before this period, narratives about Chen focused on her, but afterward, they centered on the songwriters and producers. Chen's independence and autonomy were diminished.
The deterioration of Chen's career narrative was unusual even for her era. Other singers like Julie Sue, Chyi Yu, and Meng Ting-Wei received credit for their best work; there were no competing narratives about someone else boosting their careers.
Whatever the causes of Sarah Chen's unusual experience, after this album, Chen gradually lost control. Despite her established status, a striking power differential emerged between her and the men she collaborated with; their dominance was evident in the 2003 documentary "A Letter to Sarah."
Weak lady or strong woman, it's not up to her. The game is rigged.

Thank you for your loyalty. There's no better endorsement of a singer's work than from a fan, especially since Sarah Chen has been inactive for nearly 30 years. While we don't have many songs to cover after the initial blitz, our featured podcasts contain five collections of her nearly complete works, sourced from other channels. Please enjoy them. To quote Sarah, "wish you happiness every day" (Chen, 1985) and "bless you" (Chen, 2003).
