    As a follow up to the previous Olympus Silent Shutter Video, I am discussing specifically on Anti-Shock "0 Sec" setting in Olympus cameras, which is also known as electronic first curtain shutter. I explore the origins of Anti-Shock, the problems with shutter shock and how Olympus came up with an innovative yet effective solution to that issue. Why is Anti-Shock an important step for mirrorless camera development? I talk about that too. The Ming Thein article that I have referenced in video is here: blog.mingthein...

    I just got back from a 2 week safari in Africa with my EM5.3 and I wish I'd watched this video before I left! I didn't have the anti-shock enabled in my camera despite having it set to 0 seconds. Some of my images are not nearly as sharp as I'd have liked, probably due to a number of factors (longer lenses, higher ISOs, etc), but I'd like to think every little bit helps. Thanks for the video!

  • @alantuttphotography
    @alantuttphotography Před 4 lety +4

    Back in the days of traditional reflex cameras, the mirror was the major cause of vibration, and the shutter vibration was so minimal, it didn't matter. Nowadays, with smaller sensors and higher resolutions, the shutter is having more of an effect on image sharpness. Seems like the IBIS system should be able to correct for this as well.

    Some of the comments you made might give the impression that Olympus was a pioneer for electronic first curtain shutter. But in fact, Olympus came late to that. Sony and, I believe, Nikon and Canon, had this innovation many years earlier. Olympus' feat was to put an electronic first curtain action inside a fully mechanical shutter. This was done with a firmware update to a camera - E-M1 - which dit not, until then, have electronic shutter at all. THAT was impressive. The cost was that the mechanical first curtain was still activated. Only then - and after a very small time delay (but not 0 seconds), the sensor is drained in a way that imitates the movement of the mechanical first curtain.
    I'm not certain, but I believe that even in newer Olympus cameras the mechanical first curtain is stil activated in electronic first curtain mode. My reason for believing that is, that also in E-M1 Mark II the shutter sound with mechanical shutter and electronic first curtain shutter is exactly the same. In some other cameras - Sonys for instance - the first mechanical curtain stays open and only the second curtain moves, which makes for a faster shutter actuation and even less mechanical noise.

    Good explanation, Robin. Makes me wonder why anti-shock isn't the default setting! And, the electronic first curtain is used only for shutter speeds below 1/320s, right? Say, I wonder if using 0s anti-shock counts as only half a shutter actuation? (Thereby potentially doubling the life of your shutter.)

    When the first mechanical curtain opens with the 0 shutter? or it stays open all the time whenever you turn the camera on and having it set to the diamond ? so does that mean the first curtain is out of commission with this option and only the rear that works? if so would it be wise to use that option since it is frozen in open as long as the camera is on , movement of mechanical parts is essential to their longevity , if you do not use it you lose it…so to speak.

    My E-PL8 has antischock 0 seconds and I use it always in that camera.

  • @donwhite332
    @donwhite332 Před 4 lety

    You have so many endless and very useful ideas. Regarding the shutter shock on the E-M1 III, you indicate that it has been vastly reduced. I am forced to use full shutter with exposure bracketing, (under the HDR menu), as the other options are greyed out. The deeper menu dive for exposure bracketing has very limited options and does not include the classic 3 frames at 2 stops bracket. The full mechanical shutter on the E-M1 II was fine for shorter lenses but created blur with the 40-150 Pro and 300f4 Pro. I have a E-M1 III now as well, but am away from it while on an extended trip in my own country using a Sony system. (I use the Olympus on airline travel). Thus I can not check for a while but I ask; does the new shutter create motion blur when using these two longer lenses with exposure bracketing and full shutter while on the tripod collar? As it is a bracket, there is multiple shots in a row which may not give time for any vibration recovery. I have always been mystified why Olympus greyed out the other options with exposure bracketing under the easier to access HDR modes with their greater selection of bracket combinations.

      Peter Heckert That’s interesting! So an intelligent auto drive mode is needed, that uses electronic first curtain dependent on focus length, maybe aperture and shutter speed. Panasonic has something like that, but I don’t know if they take the focal length into account.

      @@robinwong Yes, there is one drawback. With both mechanical and electronic shutter, the shutter button can be held down while the camera is turned on, and a picture is immediately taken. Essentially, the camera takes one picture during boot up, but anti shock waits until the camera is completely booted up.
