The New DEWALT 20V XR Brushless 1/2" Hammer Drill/Driver with POWER DETECT Technology (Model DCD998) has up to 29% more power than its predecessor (Model DCD996) in use with a 5.0Ah battery. This new DEWALT Hammer Drill achieves over 1072 UWO, has three speeds, 11 clutch settings, 38,250 BPM, and weighs in at 3.5 pounds without the battery.
DEWALT's secret to the new power is newly developed electronics in tools called POWER DETECT Technology that can identify the battery the tool is paired with and adjust power output accordingly. This technology helps the battery and tool mate up to perform the best. For example, this Hammer Drill will know the difference between the capabilities of the 8.0Ah XR battery and the 5.0Ah XR battery and adjust the power of the tool accordingly. If you are thinking that most tools do this already, that is not true. Most tools will perform slightly better with a higher power battery attached, but they will not significantly increase the power of the tool like the new POWER DETECT tools will. The POWER DETECT will also lower the power of the tool to save batteries that will not supply the full load-bearing capabilities.
Unfortunately, the FlexVolt batteries do not raise the performance of the power detect tools above the standard 5.0 Ah XR battery.
DEWALT DCD998 Vs DCD996
The New DEWALT DCD998 is an improved model of the DCD996. The drills are almost identical from the outside. There are some differences on the inside that include the motor and other electronics. Also upgraded on the DCD998 is the auxiliary handle. The handle still slides on in a similar fashion, but the handle is much longer adding more control and safety to the drill. The LED light is still set up to be a work light if needed and is super bright and very useful.
This drill is still very effective at hammer drilling concrete, but it is still also very loud, just like the older model.
If you are looking at the DCD998 and comparing it to the cost of the DCD996 and wondering if it is worth the upgrade, it is, if you use the drill to its max. The new auxiliary handle is very nice and worth any extra the drill would cost if you use it. Many people never use a drill to the extent that they would use the handle and in that case, the DCD996 is everything they would need if there is a cost difference. To get the power in the drill you need a large battery. The 8.0 Ah battery is the size of a large FlexVolt and that is not something we would always want to be attached to our drill. On the other hand, if you are doing work where you need or want the extra power, that large battery would not make much difference to you.
Many people will love this drill for the above and beyond power it can supply. Many others would never need that power. Either way, there is no doubt DEWALT is taking their 20-volt line to a new level of performance with this new technology. - Jak na to + styl
4:15 that’s a hell of a way to cut a 4x4 in half😂😂
998 with 8amp battery is a beast 💪
this is the most to-the-point and informative tool comparison I've ever seen
Great Vid Brian.. thanks for answering the real questions.
Wow, what a difference! Waiting for the power detect 887.
Awesome, can’t wait to get one of those
Wow at the demonstration I will definitely need to pick up the dcd998
This video helped me decide to upgrade to 998 from my current 996
Nice thing about buying the 998 even if your not using it to it's fullest, is the upgrade to more power is a large battery that benefits all your other DeWalt tools, especially if your have otherS with power detect.
I'll just stick with the 996 if it's not broke don't fix it!!! it's what I've always heard in the past!!! Very informative thanks again.
Love my dcd996 awesome to see the 998 looking to get the dcd998 soon
Great video Brian thanks for the info bud
it's probably the best drill on the market. they need to update the impact driver.
And impact wrench.
@@WorkshopAddict is there something amiss with the impact wrench , cause I know that the 887 impact driver has a serious problem . What is actually wrong with the impact wrench . Would like to know please . Thanks
@@WorkshopAddict they just need to make them a little smaller with same specs
@@WorkshopAddict AGREED They need to release new 1/2” impacts! Especially the 1/2 mid torque. Make it comparable to the new Milwaukee mid torque being released!
This video made me decide on the 996 thank you for the video.
Thank you very much for this informative comparison.
Is there a way to attach depth gauge to either of these? My current hammerdrill has one and I would definitely miss it.
Yes. I just picked up a new 998 w a new 8.0XR battery. Out the door 190. Not bad
This video was very, very helpful. I'm looking to get the dcs575b saw and a 9.0 flexvolt... do you think the 8ah would be a better match than the 9.0 flexvolt?
Wow...I didn’t think it would be a lot more powerful then then 996. The 996 has been out 4-5 years and it’s still one of the best, about the same as the new gen 2 Milwaukee. This is beastly. I won’t upgrade till my the 996 dies, but if I was buying new , I’d get this in a heartbeat.....great channel, great video👍🇺🇸
I got two 996’s and 2 998’s lmao , I’m a addict who switched from fentanyl to full time contacting and hoarding dewalt and Milwaukee, one replaced heroin, one replaced meth
excellent, excellent.excellent video! So timely as have one in my cart at lowes but just wanted confirmation..
Glad it was helpful!
I like that the 998 has a bigger longer auxiliary handle
Nice comparison. ThanQ!
Yeah looking forward to challenging octane and Milwaukee
Great video as always Brian, I own the 996, but I would love to have that extra power on tap if I needed it, I buy alot of tools every year, but they just keep coming out with bigger and badder stuff way to often to keep up with the wallet!! Lol
We seem to buy technology these days in the form of a tool..........
@@WorkshopAddict yes sir, technology to make our jobs get done faster and easier. Please keep up the great work you do, I always enjoy the great videos
I was able to order a 996 today new for $110, not knowing the 998 even existed. This 996 is already a big improvement over the 771c2 it's replacing.
Hmm, very good! What is being prepared to replace DCD991?
Great review. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Jeeez the 998 ate through that stuff like nuthin. I wonder if the runtime is affected in any way. I know it's a 8 but with more power draw i wonder if it uses it quicker. Cool review.
While I did not do a runtime test on the larger stuff, I have found all the power detect tools other than the circular saw, to be very good with battery life.
Hello from Russia 👋. Perfect tools!
Excellent info .
Hi, I would like to know if you a paddle to Mix drywall compound fit in this drill. Thank you
Brian,
I have to agree about the light switch on the dewalt drill. I have the (DCD 791) and that light switch is awsome when needed.
Would like to see a new version of the dewalt 6 1/2 circular saw.
Thanks for the video
Michael C didn’t the circular saw get replaced with the 7 1/4 brushless model?
@@Marvin-uv6cg
I don't think so. Dewalt had the 6 1/2" circular saw for years. A lot of people still like that size circular saw. Also the 6 1/2 has the blade in the left side.
Michael C i had the 6 1/2 for quite some time and I really liked the size, rather more than on the 7 1/4“, but I believe the 7 1/4“ is already on its 3 iteration also now with the newest model having power detect, and for all those who like the smaller size they‘ve made the atomic style saw. But you‘re right, it would be nice to see an updated brushless right sided motor, 6 1/2 circ saw which would be more competition to all those compact and subcompact makita, Milwaukee or even the small hikoki saw‘s out there
@@Marvin-uv6cg
Yes, I do like the 6 1/2 for it's size.
What would be nice is to see a 7 1/4 blade on the left side. Not that fake rear handle worm drive. Plus that saw is way too bulky. Just make one like the top handle size. That's a good enough.
Don't get me wrong the rear handle might be good for construction guys who can use it for raft tip cutting or to cut plywood at 4 feet wide. For the rest of us the smaller size works great.
Iv been looking at an upgrade from my old 18v xrp hammer drill. Now that old beast is still kicking but its showing its age after 5 years non stop use. Its interesting to see what the 998 can do. I am kind of reluctant to get something with new technology, with not knowing how it will hold up like my old drills have.
The DCD996 is 5 years old and has been the standard for many companies to beat. We have done tests where we dropped it in a 5 gallon bucket of water, with the battery, filled it with sand, put it in an excavator bucket of rocks and dumped it out over and over. It lived and still worked like new. Both the 996 and 998 are built to last and I feel the 998 is going to be rock solid as it is basically a 996 with a better motor and a few new electronics.
@@WorkshopAddict thank you. I think I'll get a 998 to replace my old drill. I enjoy your videos. Will you be doing the xph07z from makita vs the Milwaukee gen 3 hammer drill?
I do not know. I have a long list of this vs that and Makita is not on my list. Last video I put them in against another brand I was threatened by the company. After that, I feel like why support a company that cant handle the truth.
@@WorkshopAddict lmao really? That’s disgusting glad I stay away from that ancient shit, even the new 40v shit has nothing on flexvolt lmfao , took them long enough to try to catch up and they couldn’t even come close
Can you try the 8ah in the 996 to see if it makes a difference to it?
Thanks for making this video. I purchased a DCD998 yesterday and the chuck seems a little strange to me. I realize it’s supposed to ratchet as you close the jaws, but is it supposed to make an odd ratcheting sound while opening the jaws? Thank you. UPDATE (FIXED):
The chuck was making a weird clicking sound when I turned the sleeve either way. I put a bit in the chuck, tightened the sleeve fully, then backed it off slightly, then removed the bit, and the chuck sleeve operated smoothly. No mention of any of this in the manual.
It’s got to be a new motor and electronic control system. It can draw more power out of the battery, which is designed to deliver more power, likely with a lower internal resistance. So both are required. I’d be interested to know whether dewalt will be improving their other size batteries, and their other tools to these new standards.
Great vid brother , I'm a team red guy but I do also use the DeWalt platform. I bought the 995 & 887 kit when they first hit the stores. I can honestly say that I have beat the living shit out of these two tools and they haven't missed a beat since day one. This DeWalt 8ah battery is right in line the Milwaukees 8ah however I think it may have more in common with the Bosch's newer core 18v. I'm my Bosch 18v bulldog with the core 18v makes this little beast a little more beastly especially when compared to the older 18650's. Sorry for the long winded post.... Milwaukee.....ole Milwaukee....are u paying attention...I hope so....cuz I think that you've been taken to the learning tree.
Would you say these dewalt hammer drills are all around faster, have more power than a milwaukee gen 3 hammer drill? I'm thinking about upgrading from Ryobi to either dewalt or milwaukee but I need some feedback. I drill spades from time to time but alot of masonry. So what do you guys recommend
That is really interesting. That 8.0 XR battery has only 10 - 21700 cells. It outperforms the 9.0 Flexvolt that has 15 - 21700 cells. Dewalt must has updated the electronics in the new 8.0 XR batteries to draw more current from the cells for improved performance. I wonder If they will do the same with new Flexvolt batteries. In theory, the 9.0 and 12.0 Flexvolt batteries should outperform any other battery Dewalt makes.
The "NEW" 9.0 Flexvolts have 21700 cells, the "older" ones (pre 2019) used Sanyo 20700 cells. A dead give away is the silver tabs (heat sinks) on top of the battery. "New" 21700 based batteries have the tabs, "old" 20700 based batteries do not. I could be wrong, but it looks like the 9.0 they are using is an "old" one with 20700 cells. That is why they are not getting the same power boost. @WorkshopAddict - can you confirm?
I was curious about the 12ah flexvolt
How does the chuck compare to the Jacob's 700 Series on older DW988?
does it still have the trigger issue
awesome video, Thanks
Except for the battery, are they the Same exactly?
When would you compare 998 with other drills?
I've beaten my 996 like a red headed step child. One time it hit me back 🤣 I was drilling through a PT 4X4 without the side handle attached and it cracked me in the face! the battery spun around hit me on my cheek bone and gave me 3 stitches and the afternoon off 🤣 It's never failed me 🤞 I've owned it since it's release way back.. I've had it cut out more often lately. I might consider upgrading soon 🤔
worth the upgrade for the longer aux handle!
Good video but quick question, does the dcd998 get the same power boost with the 20v 6ah xr batteries that look identical to the 8ah?
Yes
For work we use this dcd 998. If I loosen the chuck to let out a drill bit and when I loosen the chuck to its fullest extent, when I go back and tighten it it makes a ratchet sound until I tighten it to its full extent. Then the ratchet disengages. Is that normal?
if you already have dcd996 I think it is silly to exchange or invest more money, the 996 already works very well
Did you watch long enough to hear me say that? 😁
@@WorkshopAddict I didn’t say you said it, I just expressed my opinion, that if the person already has 996 it’s not silly to switch to 998, now if they don’t already have 998
Is there an echo in here?
At 4:15 I believe those cut outs have more to do with the wood. I bet it wouldn’t cut out if it were whole like the first cut at 4;10
Hi Brain
I like you videos but I think you make a mistake in 2.13 you use the hammer drill mode on wood may this effect the result a bit because it slow down the drilling
Just maybe :)
I did, but since it was a self feed bit, I could not hear the hammering. I backed it up with further testing later. I make mistakes all the time.
Is dcd805 or dcd998 a better buy?
is it good for car cover?
What would you recommend to mount farm gate hinges through telephone post? They are the hinges that need to go all the way through the post with a nut on the back.
A long auger bit and the dcd998 or 999 with the correct battery.
@@WorkshopAddict Thank you for the quick response! Very nicely done videos btw. Thanks again!
Good job, Thanks for the info.
I just wish it would come with a Hard Case like the DCD996 kit did!
You can find the hard case for the 996 for sale by itself on eBay for like 20 bucks. The 998 will fit in there perfectly.
Nice video.
Lol I tried taking a lug nut with the 998. Honestly if the tool didn’t cut out due to safety engaging. I think it might be able to do it.
If you don’t brace properly, and it didn’t cut out. It would definitely break your hand.
Why dont you put snap-on wranch competitions
Hi Brian, I know this video was out awhile back, but I have watched it several times, and I did hit the ‘Like’ button, but not sure if you compared the results between the 8.0 and the 6.0? I am referring to the same size battery, with the 21700 cells, but 6.0 Amp hours, vs. the 8.0 Amp hour battery that comes with the Power Detect kit. Simply put, will a person only be able to benefit using the 8.0 battery? I have not purchased the kit, but I do have the 6.0 high capacity batteries, and I think they are some of DeWalt’s best, IMO. They say ‘Made in Japan’ on the bottom of the casing, which i found interesting. I’m gonna watch this video again. Good Video, and Thanks! Peace
I cannot remember if we did, but I can tell you that since this video we have compared the two batteries and there is zero difference in power, just runtime.
@@WorkshopAddict Thank You Brian! At around 9:06 in the Video you state that either the 6.0 or the 8.0 will work well with the drill. Of course the runtime will be greater with the 8.0. Now Home Depot will offer the ‘FlexVolt Advantage,’ which parallels the performance claims of the ‘Power Detect.’ I’m not so sure about that combination. As you know, that big FlexVolt battery hanging off of a drill, is tiring and cumbersome. Thanks and stay safe and Healthy!
Great video Bryan put it up against the new brushless Hilti combi drill🤜🤛👍🤠
Us guys that work in the field don’t really use a drill that often. I think most of us just use our impacts for most work. I personally use my impact 90 percent of the time, and my drill 10 percent. Yeah I’ll use it for hole drilling, but even when drilling holes for can lights I use my impact because the hole saw is made to accommodate an impact.
Did you try this with a 12.0 flex volt battery? I believe those have 21700 cells. Just curious if it’s just the cells or something else they do to the battery in the circuitry or software.
Both the 9 and 12 have the 21700 cells
WorkshopAddict interesting! So they do something inside the circuitry of the battery to make it able to push more power. Is there any label or indication on the battery that tells you it will give more power to your power detect tools? Or is it just the fact that it says 8AH.
It is just the current 6 and 8 Ah XR batteries that are able to push more power. The FV might be able to in the future, but I assume it is how the software works with these new batteries allowing more amps to be drawn.
I am very curious if they updated the little skateboard bearing on the front output shaft to a heavy duty one to handle the extra power. I have been using my dcd991 for about a year now, once or twice a month to drill multiple holes in 1/2" thick 5 ton truck frame (close to spring steel) and the front bearing is very loose even with low miles on the drill. It is very hard on the drill to go though frame like this, sometimes i even drill through double wall frame 10 ton tandem chassis frame thats a real treat. My 991 is out for repair but this 998 really interests me. I bet it could knock a few teeth out, my 991 has come pretty close a few times.
Now if they could only have this 998 with a heavier front bearing and variable rpm adjust like on the tool connect 997 that would be gold
Why the fuck are you drilling hardened steel that thick with one of these lmao, maybe consider a mag drill or something more rigid for jobs like that lmaooo , you are gonna spend more money in the long run replacing those skateboard bearings from abusing it than you would buying the correct tool for that job
@@smokefentanyl We have a mag drill, but it dont fit everywhere unfortunately and my 991 drill is compact enough and powerful enough to do the job. Im still using my reman drill havent had any problems with this one, and trust me it gets a hot supper every damn time...
great video
When will the dcd998 come to Europe
Hopefully there is no wobbling issue on the latest one
If you watch to the end I tell you the 998 and 996 both have some chuck wobble.
@@WorkshopAddict
Thank you, it look like their QAQC wont fix this issue. User have been highligthing this since 6 years ago.
So if you put the 6ah 21700 battery on the 998 instead of the 8ah, is there a big difference? Insaw you had the 6ah there but never put it on
Check out our drill video on the powerstack 5Ah. The 6Ah 21700 seems to be a toss up on if it does better than the 8Ah on the drill. The 6Ah does much better than the 8Ah on impact tools.
@@WorkshopAddict ok will do thanks. I'm trying to decide on the 998 or the 999 and I'm leaning towards the 998.
I'll just buy the auxiliary handle of the 998 to Use on my 996. Save money that way.
Highly recommend that for anyone using the 996 hard!
I Prefer the DCD997 with the Bluetooth Connect system
Alguém poderia resumir tudo que ele falou ? Agradeço a gentileza !.....
Does the 998 have an anti-kickback brake?
Nope. Even a year after you asked and DeWalt still doesn't have that feature.
the transmission in both are full metal or only 998 has?
@mmma4096 both are metal.
Just that 9.0ah FlexVolt battery cost $219.00 and the whole DCD998 Power Detect hammer drill Kit with a 8.0ah battery , fast charger , and bag is $275.00 , so I would buy the Kit instead of buying a F.V. 9.0ah bat. for my old dcd996 just to try and get a little bit more power out of it. Still Love the Video though ....👍🛠🖖
Power detect impact driver up next this year? I hope so.
By any you know where i can find the dcd998 bare tool. They only sell as kit in lowes for 280. Thats expensive as hell for a drill
Bare tool will come in the future as they want people to use the 8.0 ah battery with the tool to feel the power difference.
@@WorkshopAddict does 8.0 give more power to power detect tools?

I haven’t had that issue. Is that a common issue on some models?
Whats the difference between the dcd998 and dcd999
998 = "Power Detect"
999 = "Flex Volt Advantage"

Difference between the 998 and the 997?
997 is the digital version of the 996. 998 is the 996 upgrade.

Wow this look fucking powerfull !! I will upgrade for sure
i just bought a decent shape dcd998 from ebay for $50 usd, i don't ever really need a hammer drill but in this case i have an ethernet run i'm trying to do and i have to drill through a concrete floor in the wall to get through to the first floor
Has anyone used this drill to mix mud? Thinset?
Thank u. I'd say the 998 is the no brainer. Hopefully DeWalt just stops there for a few yrs and supports the product
How does the 6.0 Battery compare to the 8.0 battery? Is there a noticeable difference in Speed / Power?
Not noticeable in use.
It sound like he has it in hammer drill with the first bit test
For ice fishing, 998 no brainer.
I know I'm 2 years too late commenting on this video, but the 998 and 999 are barely an upgrade of the 996. I haven't taken them apart and looked at the internals, but the fact of the matter is there is only a marginal power increase with the more expensive models. Take the nice new handle off of the 998 and put it on the 996 along with a 4.0Ah high output slim battery and you've got yourself one heck of a drill for a much lower price.
After doing some research it is possible the 9ah you used in the video was an older 9ah that actually had 20700 cells instead of 21700 so you didnt get the same power boost. So it is possible with the current and some older 9ah depending on date code would get the power boost and possibly slightly more then the 8ah because it has more cells. And then 12ah i believe are all 21700. This is all jus theory not actually tested
I am working through the new flexvolt tools and have been playing around with the new 9Ah and 12Ah in the power detect tools trying to find more power. No such luck. There is more power, but not the same amount as the 8Ah 20v.
@@WorkshopAddict good to know thanks for the response
I though all 9ah flexvolts use the 20700 cells, like in the 6ah 20v max batteries. You need the 12ah for the 21700, the same cells in the new 8ah or the 4ah compact batteries
Wrong. Both 9&12ah battery are 21700 cells same as are soon furthcoming 15ah battery as well.
Its all about the electronic inside, not the cells.
You need to test it with a 21700 based DCB609. Based on the lack of heat sinks on top of the battery, it looks like your DCB609 is a pre-2019 20700 based battery. Also, your DCB206 is a older 20700 based model (the side label has in small yellow font "6.0Ah" vs. new 21700 based DCB206's large white font "6Ah", just like the 8Ah). It's still a good review, but not quite apples to apples unfortunately.
Pending what part of the video you are watching, I use the old and new FlexVolt battery. Trying every battery I can find
@@WorkshopAddict It's hard to say, you can only see the tabs when disconnected from the tool, can't tell when it's on the tool.

Check the prices in the description.
The 9amp flexvolt it has the 21700 cells the 6amp flexvolt has 18650 cells so it should be more powerful than the 8amp 20v battery
I never talked about a 6.0 Ah Flexvolt. I only discussed the 6.0 Ah XR 20 volt that has the 21700 cells. I used a 9.0 Ah FV in the tests and recommended a 9.0 or 12.0 FV as an upgrade to the DCD996.
@@WorkshopAddict I know I was just bringing that up that the cells were different from the 9amp
The Dewalt 9.0 and 12.0 Flexvolt each use 21700 cells
The Flexvolt 9.0 in this video has 20700s. Look at the top of the battery. There's no metal tabs showing along the rail which means it was Made in 2017 or early to mid 2018. Before the 21700 update.
Dewalt probably didn't(or couldn't) add a power detect identifier for any of the older 20700 packs. Which is pretty dumb considering they can all put out just as many or more amps than the XR 8.0s.
This new drill is pretty awesome because the 996 was already awesome. But the whole new Dewalt battery hierarchy is a terrible mess for the average joe.
And people were ragging on Milwaukee's battery hierarchy for being confusing, lol.
You need to put up a 🆚 video against other drills and see if “power detect” can beat the rigide octane or the gen 3 millwaukee 😏
Dcd996 beats all hammer drills at the moment. The power detect would do also
