  • Hollywood on Parade was a series of short subjects produced by Paramount Pictures between 1932 and 1934. They showcased the studio's stars both in newsreel-type footage (glimpses of Hollywood figures at premieres, parties, the races, etc.) and in new material such as sketches or musical numbers. The print quality of these isn't the greatest, but nevertheless there's some interesting stuff here. Also note that there's a numbering system associated with these shorts, but because some of the information I've found is conflicting and confusing, I just made up my own numbers to differentiate between them.
In this installment, we get a look at the sporting life led by various movie stars. "Shipwreck" Kelly gives us and a bevy of beauties a demonstration of the great sport of flagpole sitting, providing a nice excuse to spot the stars doing their thing. First they notice El Brendel, and we get a comedy routine featuring El and a Swedish instructor. Then we get a glimpse of Joe E. Brown doing his own exercise routine. Next we're off to the tennis courts, where a number of notables are either watching or playing the game. These include Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard, Charles Farrell, Robert Montgomery, Harold Lloyd, Edmund Lowe, Johnny Weissmuller and Lupe Velez, and Mary Pickford. Lastly, we get a peek at golf pro Jimmy Thompson giving his wife Viola Dana a golf lesson. Where there's golf there's Bing Crosby, who turns up to hit a ball, and Harry Langdon is also involved in the proceedings.

The first speaker you hear in this film (the heavy fellow with the cigar) is famed lyricist Mack Gordon (of Gordon & Revel). They wrote scores of hits for Paramount Pictures in the 1930s.
