    So sad but in fairness to Bonfere Jo you would have given him problem if he had taken you to Atlanta. Coaches don't joke with disobedience. He was not just coaching you guys he was equally scouting for European clubs. You should have at least agreed to his terms first and see how things pan out. He respected you enough to have even come to your hotel room with his wife! He eventually won Nigeria a historic gold medal anyway.
    I hope upcoming players learn from this story.🙄

      You said it all. Duke was a fantastic player but more aligned to the Etim Esin type character trait. Managers avoid such players, no matter how good you’ve been. It is for cohesion, unity and discipline. In life you learn to pick your fights and avoid career defining moments that could mean the difference between a successful Pro career and a guy everybody remembers with some regret for an unfulfilled potential. Great player through and through!

      He was victimized by Bonfrere because he chose to return home to play for 3SC and be close to family instead of living in a small Dutch town playing for a small club like Bonfrere wanted. Well, we still don't know why Duke didn't accept to play in Herenveen. The story isn't complete anyway. My take. But it's unfortunate that sometimes you make certain wrong decisions and you leave with them all through your life. Just get up and decide that you no do again and waka to Naija to 3SC. Why did he even let him organize the travel to Europe for him in the first place, and while there decide he didn't want to listen to the people that were his guide anylonger? Attitude might have played a very silly role in the actions that took him back to 3SC or was there a phantom agent in the picture too😂? Because players always feel they are smarter than everyone on the planet 😊. The story isn't complete game man! Who no go no know!

    • @temitopejames8773
      @temitopejames8773 Před 2 měsíci +6

      Since you know the complete story, you could have just shared!
      We still don't know why Bonfere wants him to play at Herenveen at all cost?
      That Duke even agreed to organize the trip and went to Herenveen means, to an extent, he respects the coach's guide. He went there, trained with them but preferred 3SC, apparently it is beyond money. Besides, he colleagues were playing in Holland now?
      Till date, players turn down "juicy offers" for non-football reasons. It could be family reasons, environment, culture or simply PERSONAL HAPPINESS among others. At that time, he was old enough to make his choice, not Bonfere forcing a club on him and punishing him for that. If he dropped him for performance, absolutely fine.

    • @galaxysportsmediagsports
      @galaxysportsmediagsports Před 2 měsíci +6

      @@temitopejames8773 you are still not being fair on any investor with such a way of thinking. Duke, after saying all he did, he still didn't give a convincing reason why he decided he wanted to return to 3SC. If it was any of that reason you stated, he didn't mention any. Don't build walls for people when you know those are the kind of walls that destroyed the person and should be torn down.
      This story is similar to that of a boy I took to China from my Academy. He signed a deal in the Chinese league on loan. Thank God this one even decided to stay for a while. After a season the club didn't extend the loan or make an offer. We were smart to make him a 1 year residence so we could get other clubs interested in him. We did everything but his trials were negative. I told him to relax and I had not given up. He took his things one day in the middle of another trial, and said he was returning. I was caught up in Nigeria because of Covid 19. I told him he shouldn't make that mistake since it's difficult to enter back even with a residence at that time. He refused to listen and blackmailed me towards my partners. My Chinese partners decided again I should let the player go back. We paid for his ticket to Nigeria and I ended our relationship. He arrived in Nigeria and never came to my place for months. He was still shining anyway, clothes new and all that but for a little while only. I saw him after a long while at the Goal Project Abuja and confronted him since I was indebted because of his inactions. I told him to go home to his mother in the village and stay a while with her. He was still bragging. I told him they controlled him remotely and he became aggressive towards me. The truth was that, another person who wasn't experienced was behind the picture deceiving the guy that they could get him a team in another Chinese team, if he returns back to Nigeria and go back through someone else since he had his residence permit. They thought with his residence COVID-19 had no power over the residence. Unfortunately, it's now his 3rd year in Nigeria. At least his CV now says he played for a Chinese league team on loan from an Academy anyway.
      That's why I said there might have been a phantom behind Duke's attitude. We were football players and know certain decisions players stand on are made because of some other person's promise somewhere else. But the truth is that some people use different means to waste people's careers and Duke might have been spiritually made him dump his own fortune too. 'Homesick' is a silly reason some run back home too. Some players come for holidays and refuse to return because of high life at home. Nigerian and Brazilian players face this a lot of times and many have ruined their careers because of it. He isn't the only one that maybe pride pulled down. Several players have been let down because of pride. He should invest in fixing others through his past personal experiences and tell the young ones the truth so they don't do the same. He knows the truth and we don't. We have to resist several things, especially, if we want a job as a Pro player abroad. But they don't have to resist a huge opportunity your manager who takes you like a son has provided you (who gets such an opportunity na?). Some of the white managers don't have the contacts and just lie to the NFF bosses that they have contacts. But Bonfere Jo tried but something bit him with the actions of Duke and he bit Duke back his way.
      A wiser decision would have been to endure in the club for just a few weeks and then become a Golden Boy like those who went to Atlanta 96 and after that, you can take a different stand. No player comes abroad and immediately enjoys it. A lot happens especially initially.....

    Unfortunately, I disgree with those blaming Duke Udi. After living in Europe and playing in Switzerland like he had done, the choice to return home at that particular time could be to be close to friends and family. It is often a deeply personal one that nobody should interfere with. Maybe the players at Heerenveen were cold to him during try outs. Maybe the town seemed too small and lonely. Maybe he just wanted to return to Naija and contribute to 3SC. Some things are more important in life to other people.
    An unmotivated and unhappy player won't fit well into a club. So Bonfrere should have respected Duke's decision, selected the Olympic team based on merit, chosen Duke, and continued to mentor him. That's how you deal with strong-willed subordinates or proteges and win them over.
    Anyone here who blames Duke has a slave mentality and obviously doesn't have a mind of their own. Bonfrere is the villain here, not Duke. Bonfrere has a deplorably vindictive personality and will avenge every slight, real or imagined. He even later told Duke after the Olympics that he was welcome to the national team. So what was the initial punishment for? Just to show say "na me pass you"?
    Any leader who can't separate personal bias or hurt from ethical professional judgement is a dangerous person. They either become dictators or simply don't lead for long. That's like a professor failing a bright student for not running personal errands for him.
    The same Bonfrere publicly admitted on TV that he will never forgive or speak to Westerhof and even refused a proposed reconciliation with Westerhof. Tells you what a petty and unforgiving person he is.
