  • Bursts, and Benders, and Js, oh my! A pioneer of the new Nashville sound and his tone-heavy tag team spend 90 minutes to cover the gobs of new gear that have joined their ranks since 2015.

    Back in the fall of 2015 PG traveled south to the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to catch up with Jason Isbell, guitarist Sadler Vaden, and bassist Jimbo Hart. At the time, the band gave us so much time and so much gusto about their piles of gear, the resulting Rundown became the longest ever at 65 minutes.
    Fast forward four years and now Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean finds himself onstage, surrounded by even more gear, at the historic Ryman Auditorium in the middle of Isbell’s annual October run. This year saw the Alabama native and his bandmates sell out seven consecutive shows at the Mother Church. And before the 4th night, we basically filmed a feature film spotlighting all the new inspiring additions to their arsenal and how it all further propels the 400 Unit’s sonic quest.

    It's so rare for a player as skilled and nuanced as Isbell to be so good at talking about the way he approaches his sound. So many players of his caliber just go by feel and intuition and let their techs worry about the details. I fully believe that he is among the most intentional performers working today (that includes his lyrics and melodies) and I respect the hell out of that.

    At the time of posting this comment, 11 people dislike a video that goes through some of the gnarliest vintage guitars you will ever see, including what could be the most famous Les Paul burst that’s currently in circulation. Every piece of aforementioned gear is discussed thoroughly by guys that are solid musicians and actually know their shit. I guess I will just never understand how people like the 11 folks that disliked this video exist on this planet. You’d think a condition so serious it affects taste that badly would also be fatal, at least it should be. Rock on Jason and PG 🤘🏼

    • @NatePieper
      @NatePieper Před 3 lety

      I loved this as well, but one thing that wasn't great was the interviewer would NOT stop interrupting Jason, and most of what he was saying wasn't even contributing to the conversation. He just could not seem to shut the hell up and let Jason talk. This would've been perfect to me if that didn't happen, but overall this really was a legendary rundown.

    Jason demonstrates an amazing level of maturity and professionalism when he talks about keeping stage volume low so that the FOH engineer can have as much control as possible. I mean, he's a modern day guitar god. He could choose to be a real diva if he wanted, but instead he makes it easier for his team to create the best possible experience for his audience. What a gem.

And much as I have always loved his songwriting, singing, and playing, I think his response to the question of whether he tries to take it easy on the Red Eye just makes me love him even more. Guitars are meant to be played and enjoyed, not babied.

    I told my wife at his concert in Köln that he is the prime example of a person that uses each guitar to get it's specific tone. If he pulls out a tele after playing his strat you are going to hear a tele vs strat sound. He doesn't change anything to make them sound alike. And that Red Eye sounds awesome.

      @@buddymiller3723 Honoured! We've met at least once (at HSB, back when Dawn Holliday was still running it), and we have Annaliese Tassano in common. Hoping to see you again next 4 January, when Steve's memorial show for Justin hopefully actually happens at the Ryman. I'm a Zemaitis woman myself (I have five of them, all completely different edge to edge), but how can anyone not go to a happy place when someone holds up a 1959 "red-eye" Les Paul...?

    "Celluloid Nitrate."
    Most celluloid nitrate came from/comes from Italy. Cutting cost, Fender discontinued celluloid nitrate after '65.
