Can You Be a GOOD DOCTOR AND HAVE A FAMILY ?!

  • I get so many messages about people being inspired by the fact that I both: have a family and work towards being a doctor at the same time. The reality is, there are many of us in medicine that have families and started our families during training.
And you can do it too! You can still be a strong kick ass parent and still go to work! Don't let preconceived notions hold you back.
    Keep in Touch!
Wyatt, London, and I and fairly active on instastories. Follow us / dr.jennale if you are interested in more behind the scenes of medicine/hospital and home life!

Thank you for sharing the truth about working in medicine, raising a family and just sticking with the process. Medicine is such a long journey and to take it on along with raising two young children...you are amazing! My plan is to try to apply to medical school when my youngest (who’s currently 2) begins Kindergarten. As for trying to manage working full time, taking prerequisites courses, and raising two children and being a good wife...I’m learning that for me, “embracing the chaos” has helped. I struggle studying at home too because when I get home it’s always “mommy, mommy” right up until bedtime. Hiding to sneak in study sessions didn’t work because they thought I was playing hide and seek lol. So I just study at the kitchen table so they know I’m nearby and kick in my “mamba mentality” when a test is coming up. Medicine is a huge sacrifice but I know that 10 years from now you’ll look back on your life and be happy you took the journey. Keep on keeping on because you’re almost at the finish!

ah, not bringing work home is so key. i was trying my best to study as much as i could in my free time at the hospital for that reason too. in med school, i still have to bring school home but it is a good reminder to try and make the most of your free time during the day!

@@drjennale you are a great example. I wish people knew how doable it was! So many (and i mean many...) members in my family all, cardiologists, anesthesiologist, pulmonologist, gynecologist, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, family doctors, have all gotten married and started families while in school. I could never say it was easy for them. I've seen them miss really important moments in their kids lives because they were on call, BUT they *always* made sure to make it up to them and spend quality time with the child. And their children do not feel deprived of their love at all. You just have to be very determined if you choose to go into medicine because it takes a LOT of willpower.
