This was actually the first song that my ex-boyfriend dedicated to me. He used to believe that I was the lemon boy he had been waiting for. Guess what? he was the one who got tired of me. Lemon Boy is a representation of our inner childhood. As kids, we tend to see the world from a brighter perspective. That's why lemon boy always grows back like a weed because the narrator is still a child. Playing outside then it starts to rain? Fine, then play under the rain. It was simple back then.
But as we grow older we tend to get a grasp on reality. Truth is, the world is ugly. We start to get pressured by what society expects us to do and worry about things we can't control. Hence the lyrics, what if we run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, whales start to beach themselves, and tortoise shells tear away from their spine?
In the end, he just accepts Lemon Boy as a part of him. Not getting too attached to material things and living a simple life like Snufkin and little my. Appreciate the little things and always see the bright side in bad situations.
Also, I love how he starts with "Lemon Boy and me" and then it became "Lemon Boy and I" in the end. Like how we realize right vs wrong as we grow older but also become boring, formal adults.đ

It's the story of a young boy, who is very shy and unsure of himself. A energetic and bittersweet boy starts to hang out with him at the kindergarten and they quickly become best friends. The both opposite are getting along so well, they play together everyday. But one day they fighted over a silly thing and the lemony boy got pushed on the road by the shy boy, and was hit by a car.
The shy boy was feeling absolutely guilty and traumatized by that, of course. He couldn't accept what he had done, and in absolute denial he started having the same friendship with a yellow pillow with a smile drew on it.
The music continues and he became more and more alone with his pillow. And years after that, when he was a young teenager, he realized the pillow lemon was ruining his life. He couldn't stand it anymore and decided to go find his childhood friend for a final visit.

So what I think this song is about is that lemon boy is like the shy kid or a kid with anger issues (why he calls him a bittersweet boy) and he wants to become friends with robin. Robin is hesitant at first but they eventually become friends. robin starts acting like lemon boy and robins friends donât like lemon boy because of his personality. Robin doesnât care and they stay friends. Soon robin is scared of losing lemon boys friendship (what if I run out of fertilizer, what if the clouds run out of rain, etc.) but he concludes that he wonât and eventually they become best friends

My interpretation of it is someone developing depression or something like that. He ripped Lemon Boy out of the ground but he came back. Most people try to deny their depression.

And finally, him remaining friends with Lemon boy could be him finally accepting his depression and learning to live with it.
