Miku laughingly hinted in one of her radio broadcast talks with Saiki that calling the original Cluppo release an April Fools' joke was a sort of defense: in case the project was seen as a flop, she could say it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. She shouldn't have worried!
I have listened to her album "Hatofull" (hato meaning pigeon/dove) quite a lot. Sometimes I need a bit of a rest from the intensity of Band Maid. Cluppo music is like a sweet dessert after a spicy, savory meal :-)

You probably want to react to "Peace & Love" first/next. "Peace & Love" came out as a single in 1 Apr 2021 (the April Fool's joke, which had big shoes to fill because the previous "joke" was Gion-Cho and a full Band-Maiko album), then "Flapping Wings" came later along with the album "hatofull". Meaning, "With You" was actually released after Cluppo's first album (it's also written as an anime song). Not all the songs on "hatofull" are pop, it's quite an experimental album. The other members don't have anything to do with the production or recording of any of the songs.

This single was commissioned for the anime Smile Of The Arsnotoria, so is influenced by the subject matter and not so typical of her Cluppo material but more like music from her Lil Cumin group Jpop trio days. The same applies to Band-Maid, as apposed to songs that are chosen after being released. In the past other members of Band-Maid chose not to contribute to Cluppo. The drummer from the band Unchain and members of other bands are known to have contributed to her music. The lady is just a genius and knows exactly what she is doing.

  • @daaaaaave

How she sounds is largely a decision she makes. She has a very large vocal range, in terms of notes she can hit, but also the character of it. e.g. Saiki remarks that Miku has gotten very good at sounding like Saiki. Another reactor, Rock Candy, describes her as the band’s Swiss army knife. She’s just very flexible. A lot of people have remarked at being surprised at how low pitched her speaking voice is in the Yokohama documentary, when she’s out of character.
Which is all just to say I think she’d find a way to sound at home in whatever genre she felt like just by force of will.

This song, for me, is an experiment which Miku agreed to undertake, just because it was a commission, and she thought, "Why not?"
From her interview in PMC Vol. 24 (2022-07-28):
    ++++++++++++++++++++
    - You have made astonishing progress in With you, the new Cluppo song digitally released on July 7.
Kobato: I’m glad to hear that, po. This time, the vibe, the way of singing, and the groove were all new challenges for me, so in that sense, I think the song made me grow, po.
    - I was especially surprised by the new aspect of your vocals.
Kobato: That must be so, po! I had never sung this way before, so a lot of people were surprised, and I didn’t imagine myself that I would sing this kind of song when I started Cluppo. I think this song was only made possible because of the anime tie-in, po.
    - Uh-huh, so it was written for the client’s specific order, wasn’t it?
Kobato: Yes, po, exactly, po! I had an online meeting with them first, and I was told “We want a song you haven’t done before while having past Cluppo elements.”
    - That’s a tough order.
Kobato: It’s the ending theme of the game-based TV anime Smile of the Arsnotoria, and I got the impression that they were very particular about the details of the song because the original game already had a well-written story, po. They specified like “a soft-feeling song” and “to sing like telling a story”. We Band-Maid haven’t had detailed specifications for tie-ins in advance like this, so it was challenging in that sense too, po.
    - That’s probably because they believed in your possibilities as Cluppo. Also, what I found interesting is that after listening to this song, the first EP Hatofull, released in March this year, sounds rock. I thought it was a pop album at the time of its release, though.
Kobato: That’s right, po. Those who usually listen to Band-Maid might think the Cluppo music is pop, po, but if you listen to Hatofull after With you, it sounds very rock, po (laughs). However, I recorded them at the same time, so it’s really only different in my way of singing and my approach, po.
    - It must have been quite difficult to record it in parallel with Hatofull, in the sense that its vibe and your way of singing in it are totally different.
Kobato: I had a hard time then, po! Even though I recorded them in the same period, they had different vibes and different ways of writing lyrics, so I recorded them as separate things by changing my mind, po.
    - However, the lyrics definitely have Cluppo-like words like “wings” [note: at 2:02] and “birdcage” [note: at 0:36].
Kobato: The anime team asked me to have images like birds or wings, so I was like “Yes, I’d love to!” and included them, po.
    - This time your way of singing is different from the previous songs. What kind of approach did you take?
Kobato: In Band-Maid, it’s centered around singing strong, and in vocal harmonies, I usually make my vocal nuance and texture a little solid to match with Saiki’s voice, but in Cluppo, I usually sing more brightly, with some strong parts and occasionally with relaxed parts, po. However, regarding this song, I talked with my vocal coach and decided to record it in a more relaxed way, as if I sang with breath, po. So, from the A-melody to the B-melody [note: verse], I was conscious of how I could relax and sing only with breath, po. But I couldn’t help but sing strong, so I needed two or three times more lung capacity than usual, po.
    - So you need a lot of technique.
Kobato: I think most people find it more difficult to sing strong, po, but I’m so used to singing strong that it was hard to recover my sense of singing soft, po.

@@frankandre4385 I remember that when I first heard this song, I was like, "Nooooo, how awful!" And then I read this interview and realized that Miku was specifically requested to sing it so shallowly. I don't know why the anime producers wanted it this way. For me, it just sounds plainly wrong, when the voice has no depth. But obviously, they wanted it to sound precisely like this, and Miku thought it was an interesting challenge.
The song is very catchy indeed, though. But I still believe it would benefit from giving Miku the freedom to sing in her "strong" voice, as she calls it. Now it sounds as if she was sick at the moment, and instead of really singing, she was whispering.

The original "Peace and Love" did come out on April 1st and was done in the spirit of April Fools. This track is much more IDOL, and remember, those are MIKUs roots with Lil' Cumin. Miku could probably sing the phone book and we'd listen :) .

I remember that day ... talk about a radical change. Just the color! And sweetness!
You've definitely got to check that one out!
Edit: Cluppo once again brings into focus how intelligent and forward-thinking Miku is (imo). Like the above said, this is more in her roots. But once the band was formed she could feel that her voice wasn't the right fit for the rest of the band, and took a step back to bring in a *perfect* fit. And in doing so, has since learned new skills and grown so much more.
Edit-Edit: LOL, I wrote this before you got to that point in your video :D

I think my favorite from Cluppo's album - Hatoful - is the 6th and last track, Superstar. You've heard the expression "dance like no one's watching?" Well Superstar is that song. It is impossible to not be happy hearing that song and I'm sure it will appeal to your girlie side. I'm just glad no one is watching when this song plays, cause I dance like a total fool. I'm sure my friends would wet themselves laughing if they ever witnessed this. Even if you don't react to it - Superstar has no video - please check it out. An other Japanese rock artist with a bunch of pop side projects is Ikkyu Nakajima from the band tricot (they are a math rock band, very much woth checking out imo). She has a couple of pop projects including more chilled out pop like this one (好芻 -> Susu), Genie High which is pretty experimental pop and she has announced an other project under her own name that will release in a month or so which I believe will be also pop (not sure what kind). Also, I can't help but recommending Zutomayo for Japanese Pop, I am typically not a huge fan of Pop, but I do enjoy Zutomayo quite a bit (and their live stuff is a sight to behold).

I guess you can look at singing Miku in two modes - Pop-Star Miku and Rock-Star Miku. Both are equally competent, both are equally powerful, but with Band-Maid, Rock-Star Miku makes more of an appearance, for obvious reasons.
You need to trace Miku's career to the beginnings and realize that she started her singing career out as essentially an underground pop-idol with the group Lil Cumin. Hence, Pop-Star Miku has always been in her (but so has the Rock In Her 😉). She does indeed have this as a side project Cluppo, with a full EP "Hatofull", that allows Pop-Star Miku to thrive even while Rock-Star Miku remains dominant in Band-Maid. I'm kind of waiting for Cluppo's next EP or album release.
Go to I-Tunes or any equivalent site and buy her EP "Hatofull" there - it's worth it really. Oh, and my favourite song there is "Pogo" (which somehow is strangely not more popular... can't figure out why 😛)

I wish you had followed my recommendation to start with the first CLUPPO song, Peace And Love. Then you would have a clearer understanding of the whole project. WITH YOU is my favorite song (maybe it makes me nostalgic, as I was living in Tokyo in the 90s, the heyday of City Pop), and it would have made sense to save it for last, as it was released as a single, after the Hatoful (another Pigeon pun) EP and has a rather different sound.

That 1st song was called Peace & Love. Bit later Cluppo dropped an EP. This song/video didn't actually come out till later
I'd suggest checking out Cluppo - Peace & Love and Pogo (my personal fave)
BTW - few years before Band Maid, Miku was in an idol band/show. I like to think of this as the road not taken

"Well thought out, well planned, well done" ... Would we expect anything else from this beloved pigeon? 🤭
Like Band-Maiko, Cluppo started out as an April Fool's thing and it may not have gone down well with every Maidiac, but still with many. And the story repeated itself again. I also suspect that Miku 'needed' this outlet for her creativity, which is why she stuck with it and made more of it.
Musically, I used to be into a lot of different genres due to a lack of quality, so I have nothing against pop music as long as it's well written and interesting to my ears. And you hit the nail on the head that Miku uses similar principles to Band-Maid, both vocally and in the instrumentals. Repetitive doesn't seem to exist in the Japanese language. :) Also we have to add that 'With You' is the only song of its kind so far. The others will surprise you po. 🕊🤘🏻

The Cluppo side project was an "April Fools Day" thing (sort of) when it first came out (digital release 2021/04/01). It was only one song, "Peace & Love". That's all there was ever supposed to be. Miku was not expecting the reaction that she got. So on 2021/08/10 a physical disc of "Peace & Love" came out. Again the reaction was more, more, more!! So Miku, with the blessings and support from her BAND-MAID family she went back into the studio to record the EP "Hatofull" which was release on 2022/03/09. The EP did incredibly well. Even after "With You" released on 2022/07/07 the fans are still looking for a follow full album. It is safe to say that Miku's little side step was welcomed with open arms by the entire international BAND-MAID family. Maybe some day we will get a proper follow up to this, if not we still have the joys that come with "Hatofull" & "With You".

She literally started out as an idol in the group Lil Cumin, so that is in fact what happened. The Omajinai Time stuff she does during live sets basically takes the stuff she did when she worked in a maid cafe to a rock stage. Those maids do "magic spells" on the food the customers order and Miku's "spells" are very close to what they do there from what I understand. And yes, I agree, the maids in those cafes (and Miku as well) are basically showman. I can not imagine how much effort it takes to do that kind of stuff.

This is a closing theme that Miku wrote for the anime "Smile of the Arsnotoria the Animation" based on a video game and manga. This was described as an anime where nothing happens. As I've heard it described, the story switches between a group of young girls at a school where they are taught magic and general education, and a group of young men who are on a mission to find that school and destroy it. The anime was heavy on character development and little in the way of action, the idea being to build suspense and conjecture as to why there was opposition between the two groups.
Cluppo's EP "Hatoful" featured five songs, one for each member of Band-Maid (including herself!) and was released on April 1st. "With You" was released much later. I had thought that other Band-Maid Members were involved, but is not the case, as four of the songs were 'gifts' to the other band members.
Will there be another Cluppo release? I dunno, but on April 1st, 2024 Miku made a series of super-chats where she announced Band-Maid news, talked about various things like her hair color and the costume she was wearing. She said she was wearing her new Cluppo costume and that she does her hair vibrantly multi-hued mainly for Cluppo projects. She didn't say anything more, but it was April 1st and who knows?
Another not-Band-Maid side project is "Wonder", that Saiki sang as a duet with the group 'Unchain' as part of their 20th anniversary concert and album "The 20th Sessions". Miku wrote the lyrics for "Wonder" and Saiki shines on this jazzy pop song.
