I absolutely love her facial expressions. I don't know why many of you got bothered. It means she's connecting with Debussy's music, from another time, through her piano, and that's pretty awesome. I think most of you hated her expressions cause you think she's trying to show up, and you totally lost the real meaning of this performance.

I play the piano and I particularly love this song. Playing it is always a very emotional moment for me so I understand perfectly Angela's facial movements, as I do it myself too. My favorite time to play is when there's nobody home, because I can play freely and express myself through the music. With others listening and watching I never manage to do this. That's why I admire Angela so much. She really feels this song and she absolutely knows how to use her gift to offer an amazing performance to the public. Thank you!

It seems that a lot of those who posted here came to see a facial recital rather than to listen to good music. My only complaint here is that the camera doesn't let us see how she moved her hands, but I enjoyed the music, and her facial expressions reflect how she feels. Why don't you go to listen to someone who can play without any expression whatsoever, see if you enjoy emotionless music better?

The camera angle is the problem. I do not have to see the performer’s face. An overhead shot of her hands would be better. Or, from the back, the arm movements and you can sniff her butt too. Artists do not have to show emotion on their face or dance with their body when playing their instrument. Put everything into their fingers and performance.

as a fellow pianist who plays this piece, i guarantee you it has nothing to do with either. it has to do with the singing, sonorous beauty of the music, especially of the last few notes ringing and dying out. she's listening with her eyes closed, enjoying them, drinking them in, wanting to get every last bit. i do the same thing at the end of every one of my pieces, even moreso when nobody else is listening because i know when they are, they're impatient for me to lift my pedal foot and be "done"
it's not at all about ego. my GOD i hate how non-musiciasns don't get musicians at all

Julianadowns, agree with you 100%..cann't expect everyone to understand that music is a form of expression that is not only heard by our hears, but, by our entire body and soul. Those who make stupid comments about her intense body and facial expressions just don't simply understand music or anything intense for that matter. Cannot not ask an apple tree to make marmalade. Good comment Juliana.

Proving that Clair de Lune will always be a beautiful piece. I equally both love listening to this with my eyes closed and watching it, with her facial expressions. Makes me feel like I'm in a different time.

hell i play piano, and every time i play all i can think is "DAMN i wish i had a camera to laugh later at my facial expressions while playing!!!". There's just something magical about the instrument that brings out aspects of yourself that you cannot hide. It's the ultimate in expression, and coming onto youtube and going ugh whats with her face flaunts only ignorance and gives a laugh to those in the know. Very delicate, very beautiful. But slow down the opening theme, it's the money maker. But hell, i can shut up because that's what's awesome about impressionist pieces; interpretation of the player is most important, and you definitely made it your own :)

With technique like that I do not care if she paints her face like a clown and sticks her tongue out at you.
Stop kvetching and enjoy the piece. Did you notice? It's beautiful.

What's all this nonsense about her facial expressions? Do you listen with your eyes or your ears? She'll do whatever she has to do to get that beautiful sound, and if that means putting herself in the moment with emoting, then so be it. When someone sounds this good, nothing they do is "unnecessary."

1964tamsin one of the many reasons young people etc..are put off by classical music because of the 'snobbery' and this kind of thing does not help, pulling faces all over the place is something I will never understand, you dont have to do any of it to play piano, its showing off in my opinion, and I certainly would not feel comfortable making those kind of false expressions in front of a crowd of people, maybe at home lol where no one can see. And Lang Lang I cant even watch him, he takes expressions to a whole new level, I like to watch real great musicians who dont feel they have to show everyone over the top feelings towards the music, Horowitz for example, just sat there an played, if you feel the music you feel the music, its within you, I dont see it is an external thing, certainly not to the extent they seem to feel it.
