    I’ve heard your views on Design Thinking (DT) many times. Those views always came across a bit confusing before. The explanations you gave previously would say that DT is good and you like it but it is not a process. I always disagreed since we use it as part of our service and product development process and get great results. But in this video, I like the approach you used and how you clarified once and for all what you’ve been trying to say. I see what you mean now and could identify since we have used the DT ways and adapted our actual process to fit each project. Excellent video. I like the flow of considerations presented. Welcome back, Dee.

      Hey Lorenzo, love your comment because it shows you watch our videos! Good point though, and we should have mentioned it in this vid. You're right: We have a strong opinion about Design Thinking. We believe that it's a good general toolset but that it's not a great way to help companies get started or get moving with the types of "innovative" work they want to do because it's too vague and too difficult to implement. I (Jonathan) spoke in detail about this in the video you saw and we still stick to this opinion. This video here is more about "what is it" in general as we've been asked a lot to just explain it, without opinion.
      Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment, it's always great to get some thoughtful arguments!

      Spot on Lorenzo! I've seen their other videos and was confused as well. They trashed Design Thinking once and it seemed like they just wanted to stir up the design community by saying something contradictory to accepted norms. This video clears things up.

    I am beginning to learn about how to start in the UX world, but what I find difficult is how to develop a set of steps in order to do a proper process, most of resources have similar ways of doing it but I guess there is nothing set of stone. My burning question just after watching: Dee says something at about the 10:30 mark about design sprints being good for "certain types of problems" -- is there already a video on that? Hey Tom, thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it! Design Sprints are great for kicking of a project or finding the next iteration of a product. Even if businesses don't get the results they were looking for, for whatever reasons, through a Design Sprint, they have usually saved a lot of time, effort and money by doing the sprint process. We're actually going to be publishing a new video all about the Design Sprint, in the very near future so we'll definitely address that area further! Thanks!

      Hey, yes most common problem is to understand business problems. This is because lack of clarity among business itself. Also another issue is timeline, budget and no design culture. Most important no visibility and interactions with actual end users.

    How many variations of design thinking are there? take for example IBM
    How empathic is a design sprint if you take the point of view from a expert (expert interview) and not the end user?

    • @AJSmart
      @AJSmart  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey, Json, so the Design Thinking we reference in this video is a specific term, coined by David Kelley, founder of Ideo, which gives a framework and mindset for approaching problems / solutions from the point of view of the user of those products, not just the business side of things. There are presumably many variations, but most usually follow a 5 step process which begins with empathising with the user, defining, testing etc. As seen from the images in the google search at the start. In Design Sprints, the expert interviews are used to try and gain a consensus on what the specific problem might be, and get everyone on the same page with what that problem is, from the very first day. In Design Sprints, the user testing on the last day informs the sprinters of potential issues or shortcomings with the prototype, and then iterations can be made, to the users benefit. Does this help at all? Is there anything else we can address from the video?

    • @theavangelist
      @theavangelist Před 5 lety

      There are NO variations. Design Thinking is 1 framework for identifying (something not mentioned here) and exploring a problem space. It has absolutely nothing to do with apps/websites.
      David Kelly popularised the framework but its origins goes back to 1950s. I have a diploma in design thinking (which means absolutely nothing)
      Bottom line is, it is a complete BS term that has become prevalent in design agencies in the last 4 years because nobody can sell UX anymore because the battle for good product design has been one.
      what a disappointing video

    Design Thinking is a Mindset. Perfect. - But Design thinking is not a cookbook? I realize you read that quote somewhere else, so while I think this is a great video. on that point I disagree. It is very like a cookbook with 5 chapters.... But the recipes it contains are for a systematic, yet iterative approach analyzing users and their experience to find opportunities for innovative and practical improvement (I bet Dee would phrase it more eloquently).... Okay, maybe DT is less of a cookbook and more of an ala-carte menu?
