- Paris is burning. Weekly protest marches draw millions of demonstrators.
General strikes halt transport, bin collection, education. The streets of the French capital are piled high with rubbish - until protesters set the refuse alight.
There are violent street clashes, between the police, anti-fascists and the far right. In one night nearly 500 people were arrested.
It started with pension reform, but is spiralling into something much bigger. Provoking questions about democracy, police brutality, and the very nature of what it means to be French.

Not true. For this, there are elections. If the people are too stupid to vote reasonably, they have no reason to moan afterwards. Well, they have the right to moan, of course, but not more. That‘s how democracy works: Not the loudest dictates who governs, but the majority, which is determined by secret elections.

The French have more backbone than the British, the British people are softer than the bombay trots.
Well I think the French pension system is set up differently than ours. If I'm correct, the French have to work at least 41 years in order to get a full state pension, whereas the British only need to work 35 years. So, I'm pretty sure we are actually in a better place than France which is why we don't full on riot.

as a French I must praise your for your excellent work on the coverage, the missing piece of the puzzle that explains why Macron is so hellbent on his reform is that it was imposed by the European Commission who has big pensions funds whispering in their ears, the budget of pensions in France is several hundreds of billions and they want access to that pot of gold by destroying our social model. This was really really well done! So many "news" outlets resort to shock value in their thumbnails and titles, "blood and fire in the streets of P" for example. Thank you for showing the nuanced reality of these protests. 99% regular working people, marching for their rights. The editing and filming was on point, choice of title cards was great and showed respect for our culture. "Sous les pavés, la plage" is spot on, a foreign outlet capturing the intricacies of that statement is top tier journalism.

If that's OK with you, we're fine, but we in France don't buy that. We believe there is enough riches created within the economical system as it works today to fund a state pension that allows people, if so they wish, to retire with full benefits at 62.
And indeed, we have cultural inclination to be weary of ruling classes, be they aristocratic as in the past, or economic as of today. So we do fight for our rights, and we do fight hard.

Two young ecologists are dying since sunday at Sainte Solline . A lot of Yellow jackets before and other protesters after have been severely injuried ( 40 to 50 persons) , that's our "democracy" since Valls and Macron.

People in France get that we're all pensioners eventually. Cuts in pensions now, will affect younger people disproportionately more by the time they reach retirement age. If pensions fail to keep up with inflation, every year that follows sees pensions fall further and further. Why should we just accept Government increasing retirement ages? The more we allow rich politicians to force working people to work longer and longer, they will just come back with more and more austerity? If we just accept their rationale, ordinary people's quality of life just continues to decline. They tell us the Country cannot afford existing retirement ages, but always find money to bail out the bankers. Enough of this hypocrisy and double standards. Why does the second wealthiest country in Europe, have the lowest state pensions in Western Europe?

I am french but moved to London for work, following those protests closely. I am quite impressed by such motivation! Even if we assume that a pension reform is a good thing, it cannot be passed against the vast majority of people and even the members of Parliament!

I think the French pension system is set up differently than ours. If I'm correct, the French have to work at least 41 years in order to get a full state pension, whereas the British only need to work 35 years. So, I'm pretty sure we are actually in a better place than France which is why we don't full on riot.
Germany is at 67 years of pension but they give 35 real years when we at 62 years must give 41 trimestres so it's more than German. Also if you only started to work at 30 years old cause you had a long student life, you must work more than 62 years old then.

It's 43 years now! E.g., this new bill won't change anything for my personal case: I started to work at the "late" age of 23, so I have to work to 66 regardless, if I want to leave with a full rate pension. The ones who are getting owned big time are the people who started early.
It’s 43 so for me for instance who has started to work late because I did a lot of studies, I will have to work until 67 to get my full pension

Interesting to watch this - thank you for publishing. I wonder why UK Government has decided to not move forward (delay?) the change that would increase UK pension age to 68... (I'm in the UK and 65 years old and I'm having to return to full-time work because our government has devalued my pension [savings...] by 20% this year)

These protests would be highlighted in a positive light on headline news if it were in a county the US wants a different government in. Any socialist country that has people in the streets the western media is all over it. Nancy would be praising the bravery of the those people and Victoria Nuland might even bring cookies to the protests.
I'm Dutch and the big football match was against us and France won 4-0 our players were $hit. But, I want to tell the French people, don't yield! If you give them one finger they'll take the hand within our country they linked our pension age to life expectancy so I have to work until 68 where it used to be 65 in the Netherlands en Pays Bas to the French. Reforms went even further in many ways recently and our Unions are to cowardly to fight and because they buy into a neoliberal framework they actually helped design it like this! In the last elections there was a third contender who actually got more votes than Le Pen and is on the Left but, he's continuously looked over by everybody, Jean-Lúc Mélenchon. He ran on a united left ticket and nearly beat Macron in the second by just a few percentage points.
