CLEVELAND BROWNS THERAPY SESSION: How were we so off on our predictions vs. the Texans?

  • The entire UCSS panel picked the Cleveland Browns to beat the Houston Texans.
    Jason & G picked the Browns to reach the Super Bowl.
    The dream ended in catastrophic fashion Saturday when CJ Stroud and the Texans boat raced the Browns out of NRG Stadium, 45-14.
    Everything that could have went wrong for Joe Flacco and the Browns, did go wrong.
    So how was everyone so wrong? Let's dive into it.
    From ESPN's recap:
    "As the games get bigger, C.J. Stroud just keeps getting better.
    The rookie became the youngest quarterback to win a playoff game after throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and the Houston Texans returned two interceptions by Joe Flacco for scores in a 45-14 rout of the Cleveland Browns in a wild-card matchup Saturday.
    “C.J. is the reason why we’re in this position,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s special, a special young man. Special player. Continues to shine no matter how big the moment is.
    "Our whole team is leaning on him and he has the shoulders to carry that weight.”
    Stroud, the second overall pick in the draft last April, is also the highest-drafted rookie QB to win in the postseason. He picked apart Cleveland’s vaunted defense, throwing touchdown passes of 15 yards to Nico Collins, 76 to Brevin Jordan and 37 to Dalton Schultz.
    “It’s been a heck of a year and I thank God, I can just go another week with my teammates,” Stroud said. “This is like a dream come true.”
    At 22 years and 102 days old, Stroud passed Michael Vick, who was 22 years, 192 days old in 2002 when his Falcons beat the Packers.
    “I’m super blessed to be considered with a great name like Michael Vick, who was my favorite quarterback growing up,” he said. “And hopefully I can make it two (wins).”
    Stroud threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns before halftime as the Texans built a 24-14 lead. The defense took over after that, with Steven Nelson and Christian Harris returning interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive drives in the third quarter to extend the lead to 38-14."

      Look. Let's be real here. Joe fit some "social and cultural " dynamics that majority of browns fans identify with. It's the same with them thinking colt Mccoy could play. It's the same reason why Matt delevadova is more loved than lebron. So biases is why they over looked a guy who had 8 int in 5 games (probably should have been 11 if Chicago safeties could catch). He also was comp. 58% comp of his passes. He's only hit 60% once. They overlooked it because he was "one of them". Not realizing he wasn't efficient (Watson analytically was better even though Watson sucked). And he was playing the weakest part of our schedule against teams with a combined losing record. And they still want to keep this dude. I saw this coming a mile away.

    At home this year they gave up 3, 3, 28, 17, 0, 10, 27, 17, and 20 in 9 games = 13.9 points allowed per game at home
    On the road they gave up 26, 38, 24, 31, 29, 36, 22, and 31 in 8 games = 29.6 points allowed per game (31.3 if you factor in the 45 points from the texans).

      You didn’t watch the game. Browns lost it. Texans didn’t win it.
      Defense played the worst I’ve seen them play. Stroud didn’t do almost anything. His yards were inflated but don’t be fooled. It was yards after catch. He had multiple 1-play, 4-play TDs not because he was great, but because they were so wide open, and one was a DUMPOFF for 2 YARDS that became a TD. Browns defense lost the game.
      Then the 2nd half the offense started sputtering. In Texans territory, QB & receiver miscommunication led to a pick six, and nobody tried to tackle except and offensive lineman.
      Then a stupid 4th down call, led to another stupid pass.
      Browns single handedly lost the game
      Wasn’t stroud whatsoever
      1. Was Browns Defense literally NO-SHOWING
      2. Was Texans Coach Prepping well

    Yes, the Browns D was overvalued all season because they put up so many of their gaudy #'s vs moribund offenses, but it got continually glossed over. Yesterday they played the first good offense and QB they've played since the Rams. And the Flacco thing was always a house of cards, there was so much fan base delusion around all of it.

    Can we talk about the proverbial "Browns is the Browns" banana peel for a minute?
    We thought we had moved past that slogan, thought this team was different, thought the Browns turned the corner as a franchise. But this game single handedly brought us a step back & showed us that no matter if the Browns have a #1 defense, a QB who is lighting it up, a situation where people believe in this team for real...that banana peel is STILL right there to make us look like clowns.
    To play that bad & lose like that, after the season we had & everything this team has been through (this season has felt like a 3 year saga haha) just doesn't happen to other teams. A lot of teams would lose that game, but to get completely humiliated in the traditional & traumatic "Browns is the Browns" fashion is just the worst feeling right now.
    It was so bad that none of the regular season matters or should be remembered. It's not going to matter if this team goes 17-0 with record setting #1 offense & defense next year; that proverbial banana peel is going to be right there to slip on until they prove that it's not. Unlike any other freaking team in the league.
    "The Browns is the Browns" may not mean quite the same thing in years past, but don't think for a second it's not still there. 45-14 vs the Texans after the season this team had is the evidence. Yall go through ALL that, just to lay down when you have an actual opportunity. Ugh. I don't feel bad for any of em right now. But the fans, I sympathize with. We STILL can't trust this team for sh*t.

      It is a shame to think that all the records this defense set this year will likely not be talked about in the future. They might be referenced in local Browns discussions. But in the national spotlight, they’ll most likely be forgotten.

    • @loganadolf7363
      @loganadolf7363 Před 6 měsíci

      @markh8744 at this point they don't deserve to be talked about. It amounted to nothing when it mattered. #1 scary defense in the NFL giving up 24 points in like 15 plays? That has to be one of the worst starts to a playoff game ever by a unit that was widely regarded as elite...man...maybe I'm being a little harsh, but feeling humiliated in that fashion as a fan at the sports bar leaves no sympathy from me. I don't know how much better you can ask any defense to play next year in the regular season, but one thing we do know is that the Browns can fall apart like no one else can.
      I think it's strange to think that I was more optimistic about the next season after the 2020 playoff loss in Kansas City. This year we had a defense that got pretty close to hitting its ceiling throughout the year & they still managed to look like a bunch of late round rookies when the ultimate goal was actually within reach. I really don't know how to look forward to next years regular season because it feels like no matter how good they play it won't matter til we see them in the playoffs

      I agree I thought Flacco would eventually kill the Browns with picks in a playoff game. The Browns fell in love with his passing ability because of how underwhelming I think Watson, Dorrian Smith, were when really the Browns strength and way to beat teams for last few years has been their running game. But with all that being said, the Browns D was the number one reason for their loss. They went from being the most intimidating D in football earlier in the year, to I think a D with holes going into 2024-2025 .

  • @MichaelDonat
    @MichaelDonat Před 6 měsíci +2

    The prior week, the Browns had a game they could take for granted and accordingly didn't dress any of their key players in order to 'rest' them, while the Texans were involved in a close, physical game just to make the Playoffs. According to the pundits, the Browns were the team primed to win 45-14 (the Texans are too worn out and beat up to compete). When you take the last game of the season for granted- and you play accordingly- you are rolling the dice as to whether you can get that momentum back in the Playoffs, where you don't have the luxury of having a bad day

  • @terryweller1233
    @terryweller1233 Před 6 měsíci +3

    Misguided expectations caused the loss to seem so painful. Outside observers were telling you this for a couple of reasons.
    First, the Browns do not have the #1 defense in the league. When you cherry pick certain stats to make your case, you miss the big picture. The only stat that really matters is the points allowed per game. That's why the Ravens are clearly the best defense in the league.
    Next, fans/Browns media were way off base on expectations for Joe Flacco. Even while he was putting up numbers in helping the Browns make the playoffs, underneath were obvious negatives that make a difference in the playoffs against better teams. Flacco is a turnover machine and his lack of mobility makes him a sitting target for opposing defenses. It all showed up in the space of a few minutes against the Texans. Flacco was sitting on his couch before the Browns called for a reason. You saw it yesterday.
    Finally, coaching/game planning was definitely less than the Texans showed. Everyone should put to rest all the talk about Stefanski should be coach of the year. The better candidate was on the opposite side of the field.
    Add it all up and the score of the game yesterday makes perfect sense----partly because the negatives above showed up in even worse form than expected. But they were all there for everyone to observe and the Browns were not the team that people convinced themselves was going to show up.

    For this game, the offensive line was a siv. The Browns offensive line run and pass blocking was just a swing and a miss starting in the 2nd quarter and stayed that way the rest of the game. It is no surprise that we have had to play 4 quarterbacks, 2 of them out for the season, and no running game this year due to poor offensive line play. The Browns offensive needs to add new guard and tackle veteran talent to the roster next year or Watson will be so beat up half way through the season that we will lose him again to injury. The defensive line didn't play much better than the offensive line. The defensive backfield had its worst game this year as well. This off-season, the Browns need to fix these 2 groups to have a shot at winning the NFC and make a run at the Superbowl next year.
