  • Find out how John Mitchum's daughter, Cindy Mitchum Azbill, gathered an amazing group of western actors, singers and historians to record selections of her Fathr's poems. Actor John Mitchum appeared in 100s of TV shows and films. He was also a prolific writer and composed "America, Why I Love Her," which was recorded by John Wayne.

I have the record of John Wayne singing/talking "America, Why I Love Her" and love the song, but until now I had not realized that John Mitchum wrote it. Great song and thanks for all your videos. They take me back stage to all my favorite westerns.

John and Robert were incredibly talented. when asked about his earliest memory Robert dryly replied. "birth". it may be true. he and his sister were both psychic. Orson Wells called him "a poet with an ax". here's one of his poems. he wrote all his life. there are more on the web.

      Cabo San Lucas
Rising early to beat the heat
a little dry from last nights booze.
We’re soon out miles from land where
the big fish roam under the sun
      and stars, undisturbed by time’s
      wave-measured march.
Slicing bonito for bait, the blood is
red against all the blue. Blue above
and below. The hook, hungering for
meat, shines blue in my hand as
I drop its feathered plume into the wake.
We drink beer and wait for the line to sing,
rattling off the reel like a runaway train,
tightening under the drag, burning the leather stop.
The marlin leaps, its bill skewering the sky,
carves and dances in the blue, then twists and dives.
The rod quivers in the belt. Leather biting my back
I reel and pull, the marlin leaps again,
I heave forward and rare back as fire
sweat and salt gather on my skin
A moment’s slack, a shake, the fish is free.
Why aren’t all losses as lovely as this?
      Quien sabe?

"John Mitchum was a great character actor
and even if he didn't get the major roles as
his brother Robert(Bob)did but he did appear in a lot
of films and television shows mainly in supporting player
he had a recurring role on F Troop and he was just as good
as an actor in anything he did."-🤔🤠🐴🖥🌐🌍🌎🌏🌐..

After I got reacquainted with my favorite Western TV shows through GRIT and some of the other recent nostalgia channels, it struck me just how many of them John Mitchum appeared in. He was a funny guy! In El Dorado he played a bartender. In one scene his co-star brother Bob walked into the saloon and called him by his real name. Oops!

Yep. John seems to have been in just about everything. That's a cute scene in EL DORADO, Kelly.

@@AWordonWesterns Those guys must have had a blast doing those films and TV shows. I’d love to make a drive over to Bob Fuller’s ranch near Dallas while he’s still with us and chat with him about Laramie. His Jess Harper character is my favorite. My second favorite is Dale Robertson as Jim Hardy. He was as smooth as silk in that coiffured pompadour and cool blue duds. Of course we didn’t know they were blue until they started airing in color. And our family didn’t own a color TV until 1965. My mother won it in a drawing that a new bank had as a promotion. That bank was demolished a year or two ago. Boy I’m old. 😄

Great info! Can you post a link where this music and poetry is available? I have America, Why I Love Her on cd with John Wayne. A fantastic piece of writing. I remember seeing a TV Special of it, and seen it here on YT also. I would love to hear or read more of Mr Mitchum's poems. Thank-You!

Has the project been completed? If so, will it be available to the public? It would be a real treasure for western fans.
