  • Rome’s Caracalla Baths epitomized the wealth of the ancient Roman Empire. Built to welcome up to 8,000 people a day, the ruins of the vast structure are one of the eternal city’s top tourist attractions. But now, the site’s vast underground tunnel system is also open to the public. Seth Doane got a look at the miles of Roman history being explored for the first time in centuries.

"If you take the Colosseum and put it inside Caracalla, Caracalla is bigger."
    Big brain time.

These bath ruins were one of the most impressive sites I saw in Rome. The size and scope is stunning, and the idea that it was in full service for 500 years is staggering. If you get to Rome don't miss it.

I'm speechless. And at how spectacular that Rome was modern and for their time 2000 years ago. It is also amazing that Christ was born and came at a time where civilization was already put together and a thriving culture was already in place. They were so wealthy even back then and creative. I wish I could see it.

It was built between 213-217 A.D. under Caracalla and I think just after his death in 217.

Built by slaves, maintained by slaves - but we only talk about the “amazing” technology of the Romans. It would be so much better if the videos in the tunnel showed the truth - how it actually was. Not going there for sure.
