As someone who is studying computer science, I now understand Lexi's pain even more.

I think we need to discuss how fracking smart Lexi is. She holds so much knowledge on IT, and explains it in a way that we can all understand.
I had a friend who was pretty smart decide to build his own computer. He called me one day to ask why it wouldn't work. He didn't plug in the hard drive and didn't even buy a cpu cooler. He hadn't even watched a single instructional video. The whole time I was treating it as an actual issue not an ID10T error. Really felt what it was like to be a tech support person that day
I still can‘t decide what‘s better: Lexi squeaking joyfully about cute animals, or Lexi raging about IT fuckups.

2:48 My high school had a tech lady who left because she got another job offer. She was one of my favorite teachers. I was talking to her before she left and learned that high schools have no care for network security. (For reference I went to a public charter school) Multiple students who left the school could still access school accounts years after. She also showed me a Chromebook a student had burned a hole in. She had entire boxes of parts…she went to work for the second largest IT department in the state which happens to be a police department…I’ll really miss her.

This subreddit is one of the reasons I want to go into computer science or computer engineering. It’s just so interesting for me to see all the weird things people have done and to understand why they’re wrong
The kitten one reminded me of the "server down" reason when listenonrepeats server went offline all of a sudden. The explanation came in the form of six kittens who had snuck into the server room and made themselves at home in the casing. They were too adorable to be angry at for too long. We users learned this thanks to a picture of the "crime scene" being taken and posted. XD

The one about shutting down the computer to keep them virus free might be legit. Our school had a program called deep freeze that resets everything back to an image when it boots up again. Any virus that some kid accidentally or purposely put on the computer would go away after a reboot.
We loved that software because you could just mess with the computer as much as you want and could just reboot it afterwards.
Yep. Read-only boot disk, virtualization, network boot (without write privileges) . . . there are a lot of ways that a compromised currently-running operating system can be rendered incapable of altering the state of the OS following a reboot.
You do need that software though

I love listening to Lexi talk tech stuff. I have great memories of my dad giving me a screwdriver and setting me loose onto his computer graveyard to take things apart. I still like collecting the hard drive discs; they're super shiny and I like spinning them on my fingers.

At my former job, each computer had its own ups battery surge protector. When the battery died we ended up stacking them up in the storage room because we had to dispose of them in a particular way. We basically went through batteries like toilet paper.

As someone who had a chromebook in high school and was hired as glorified tech support in senior year, yeah chromebook chargers (especially the crappy offbrand replacement ones schools will buy) are VERY easily broken, especially by middle and high school students.

I am somewhat competent with electronics and electrical stuff, and when I was replacing some outlets in the living room because they had lost their grip completely, I had to literally cut around the cover plate with an exacto knife to cut the paint away. Plus the ground hole on some of the outlets weren't even usable because they were filled in with paint. I don't know what the painter was thinking.

About the kitten on the gpu, that GPU's fans go fast enough to cut nails clean off.
Also, cat fur often ends up with conductive materials in it, which could short the 12V pins that the kitten has their paw on, which can start a fire, or just straight up electrocute the kitten. Conveniently, there are pads at the other side also for the 12V rail, so the current would have a clear path straight through the body. It's only 12V, but its 12V straight from a PSU which looks like one of the cheap ones that don't have overcurrent protection or short-circuit protection. A kittens body will also have far, far less resistance than the human body (human body will have 2330ohms from hand to hand and half that from hand to foot for high voltage scenarios, so now imagine a kitten, but far thinner skin, lower voltage, sure, but extremely high current capability.
Cat fur is also very flammable, and certain components in a PC can emit fumes as well. And also, a 12V rail short to the PSU will end up popping a lot of capacitors, and I imagine the front fans on that PC will not be super kind to the kitten's face at that point.
Basically, yes, this isnt hardware gore yet, just "imminent" hardware gore and a crisis trip to the vet just waiting to happen
Modern GPUs are also usually designed to just barely be held well enough by a standard PCIe x16 socket with guard mount attached. A kittens weight is small, but for some motherboards, it could make enough of a difference. Plus, I doubt the kitten just floated gently onto the GPU. I know mine doesn't float, at least. It slams, then trips, then blames me regardless of whether I had anything to do with it
This channel has actually helped me to catch an expanding battery in my laptop. Never knew this was a thing and just thought my keyboard was expanding from heat. It definitely looked like a scary pillow when I replaced it.

As soon as it looks like a fine matte finish, change the sandpaper for a piece of cloth (not microfiber, that would probably take forever), and polish it with that until it you can use it as a mirror.

regarding 15:51 this could work, if their sysadmin is utilizing deep freeze. deepfreeze creates a secure master backup, which the computer restores to on every boot. (I'm no sysadmin, I don't know more of how it works, it's just something I've seen in the wild) but it only works if you actually turn the thing off.

I have been watching EmKay's videos and have figured out that each subreddit is given to the person that gives the most ding danglies about it. This has been an ongoing research for months and now I am happy to conclude this research for good. However I will still enjoy this content.
I saw a rackmount in a bathroom before. It was in an older building with little room, the building was not designed with LAN in mind.
