I wanna go back and edit so bad. Instead, I write down edits and changes on sticky notes. Sometimes it's a great writing tools to see potential plot twist lol ..or plot holes 😂
Haha that's funny! But whatever works and at least you're doing some writing!
I do this! I use notes app on my phone it’s so good
@@mythologyalt3966this actually seems like a pretty good idea
Thanks for the idea, and im not even a writer lol
@@mythologyalt3966I have pretty much my entire world built and character details and plot ideas in notes on my phone. I started using a to do list app for book ideas and things just started pouring out of me…so now I’m going through the long process of transferring all of those ideas and sometimes complete scenes to my laptop 😅
"You can't edit a blank page" - heard this from an agent at a conference and I have had this on a post-it note on the wall above my laptop. it's the best piece of writerly advice I have ever received.
this is genuinely good! :D
Tip number 1 is the most important tip for ALL writers! I am so thankful I learned it in college. It’s sooooo much more helpful to write it all and edit when it’s finished. Also, take a day or 2 break before editing so that your mind can decompress a bit. It’ll be easier to spot glaring mistakes. If it’s a book, a week break may even be best! I have been a copywriter in the past and a technical writer for a few years and now am a writing tutor. Great tips!
Update: I’m back doing Technical Writing again… just thought I’d provide an update.
Couldn't agree more!!!
So true, i always have to finish every single thing then edit.
@@CL-eg8mb there’s never a one size fits all, but generally editing as you go slows people down a lot. If you’re writing with strict deadlines and have multiple projects going at once (I often have 3-4 technical documents I’m working on at any given time) the time really adds up. People tend to learn what works through trial and error anyway.
Factual documents and fiction are extremely different. When I write a 40k factual article with a deadline, I always edit at the end or if and when new information comes to light.
Fiction is an art, factual literature is a science. @@ordinaryopinion4081
I started writing at 8! My third grade teacher always hated looking over my work because I had a journal and everybody had to write a paragraph about what they did the previous night. I used to add everything, I got super off track a lot. I’m in middle school and I have learned a lot, now I write all sorts of things and currently I’m working on a fan-fiction! I’m so happy I can use your tips to improve my writing!
You've been writing since you were 8, that's mindblowing. I started writing when I got heartbroken
I love this comment!😭😭😭😭 You go!
I’ve started writing when I was 8. working on a book right now
@@JustNYSonYT I wish you all the best and the success!
Wow I strated writing at age 9 but I used to write and throw away then I became serious about writing at age 12 and my class assistance bought me a notebook to write my short scenarios in because she was so impressed by my work and now I am 13 I am and on a journey of writing my first ever novel and some advice I can give u is that when a writer is writing it is not them writing anymore the pen and mind takes over so just have fun and just do you 📝😁
I just began trying to be a writer and I struggle with this horribly. I can feel my enthusiasm for my writing being sucked out because I’m constantly trying to perfect my work as I go.
Couple things that I found helped me that I got from my high school creative writing teacher. First is to set a timer and write for ten minutes. Don't put the pencil down, don't go back and erase anything. You could write about the table you're sitting at, a neat shirt you saw, how life's going, or about how you don't know what you want to write about. It helps warm you up for writing while also getting you used to not going back and editing.
Second is just a line she gave us; "It doesn't have to be perfect, but it doesn't have to exist. You can't edit a blank page." I actually use it as a mantra for any assignment I'm doing because that first half is so widely applicable.
Finally, give yourself permission to write bad. Write in a way that is nigh incomprehensible. Make mistakes and glaring plot holes and scenes that aren't necessary and don't make any sense, and don't turn back to notice them. You will come back to edit, once that draft is written, and you will find them then. But you will never get to that point if you keep turning around to watch the dirt road yield up stones as you pass. It is not your job to pull those stones out, not the first time you go through. You have to get to the end of your path, gather your tools, and make a cobbled road out of what looked like a ruined path.
These are just the tools that I found helped me out. If it turns out they don't work for you, then they're worth what you paid for them. Good writing, friend
SAME! I work myself up until just looking at what I've already written makes me depressed.
I haven't personally tried it, but I've heard writing in comic Sans can help with this. If you set your manuscript to a goofy font for your first draft, you won't feel like this is something that is supposed to be polished and finished at that stage. You can just write with the freedom to be goofy and messy as much as you need as long as you just keep putting words on the page.
Yes! I've tried it and it worked well for me!
That's a good one. It's okay for your 1st draft to suck.
It really is. Once I was mentally okay with that, it's when my writing really was able to move & I'm on my 4th novel now. It works 🥰
@@ArabellaKFederico Awesome! 😃
I am much like you. I wanted to become a writer at this teenage so badly, but I suck everytime I wrote a story that I didn't even finished it because of being so perfectionist 😭
I totally understand that. I learned that the work will never be perfect, though. If you truly wanna write professionally, realizing that perfectionism is simply self-sabotage to keep you safe (from critics, ppl not liking our books, bad reviews. Etc.) And that you have to accept, although it's SO PAINFUL, that it's part of the job. Now, if you don't wanna do this professionally then who cares and just write your hearts desire. Writing is tough, but it's very doable. I've got vids that can help you with your self-concept around Writing if u feel you need help, they're under Writing Rampage. Wish u all the luck 💙💜💙💜

That is great advice! I think a lot of people have trouble with self doubt and over researching/thinking..just dive in put ideas to paper and work everything out as u go! 😁👍
What I like to say is that it will unfold perfectly the way that it is meant to at this moment, and I the writer am just the space for the story to come, whether I revise the chapter later or not. That takes the ego out of the equation that kept going in circles trying to "get it right" because there's no metric for what that is.
Love the attitude!
I am 13 and my 1st book is comming out next month!!!!
Omg congratulations!!!! It's gunna be so amazing 👏🏻 enjoy it and be sooo proud of yourself!
@@ArabellaKFederico thank you!!❣️
Literally the reason my writing never progressed when I was younger. That, and I was a panser and not a plotter, so I just WROTE stuff and didn't know anything and I hoped things made sense. LOL!! Now I am creating a detailed plan and things are definitely going a lot smoother! PLUS I actually have a more detailed plan for the middle of my story, which I've NEVER had before !!!
I'm still a pantser so I haven't learned my lesson 😂
Yes! Magic during edits. Great attitude
Yes! Thank you!
I'm not a perfectionist hence I published a book, later edited again and published a revised version😅
What's the name? I'm preparing for my book to publish... So reading your book may inspire me to actually finish it.
yess!! I write poetry and for a long time I could never ever just let something be bad, or even so-so. it had to be perfect the first time. I didn’t realize how much I was limiting myself! I’ve since written my best stuff!
This realization makes writing my book so much more enjoyable and I’m loving how it’s coming so far
Oh good I'm so glad! Keep up the good work!
Wow, this video is a treasure trove of wisdom for aspiring writers! Your transparency about the struggles of writing that first draft is incredibly refreshing. It's so true that being okay with our first attempts, even if they "suck," is a crucial mindset shift
This is solid advice!! I ALWAYS do this😖
Thank you! Keep it up!
The only time I edit is when I am fully done with the the project. Then I refine it within a period of 3-6 months. Just cutting, trimming, refining.
I approve of this method!
I'm tryna write my first book😊 I'm writing it on paper first, it's called star cafe
Sounds great!
That is so true. I remember this one story I started... I just spent hours on the first chapter for months and wasn't satisfied anyway because I wanted to be perfect 😢
Thank you for that. I swear if I keep editing I will never get this story down
And this is why I never show a book before it is written! People don't understand, it is a draft!
I just learned this after writing for over 10 years. I never could finish a story because i was trying so hard to make every sentence perfect
I’ve just been writing down all my thoughts and ideas and scenes. Then I’ll think about it or go back and reread it and edit. The most important tip I’ve heard is to JUST WRITE.
Very good advice. Thx!
Great advice!
Thanks so much!
Me perfecting each sentence of the same scene I’ve been working on all day as I watch this short😅🤣👌✨
Can't write books, just short stories, poems, and even songs sometimes. Something that happens to me while writing stories is what I call "half zoning out," which is basically me entering a state of mind where I'm not completely focused on what I'm writing, which causes the story to..suck 😬
I work security so I spend a lot of time creating concepts and story lines, but when it comes to actually getting things down, I'm stuck haha
The first draft is for getting the bones on the page. My personal rule is if it's something that could literally be fixed in one second (two words without a space between them, a quick typo, a missing apostrophe, etc), I'll let myself edit it, but if it's just a sentence that isn't flowing well I'll just leave it be and trust that I'll know what I meant later. Also!! I didn't come up with this hack, but if your problems are more research/coming up with names based, I write on Google docs and every time I can't come up with a name or don't know a historical fact, I change the letter coloring to yellow and write "ELEPHANT" in bold font, and then when I'm editing, I look for all the "elephants" and come up with names/dates/historical facts/etc.
I started a writing assignment in class on October 14,2022 and that draft currently has 20 pages, 9 chapters (not full ones) and 11330 words- it’s crazy. I just wrote what was on my mind and now I’m finally organizing it all and planning on where it’s going and such
Wow. Did you later figure it out?
@@damolaadelore kinda, there’s still some random plots and stuff
That's nice. Would you like some help with them?
As a writer, I know how difficult it is to meet up with deadlines and procrastination. But I also know that sometimes, one needs some help to take the burden off the shoulders.
@@damolaadelore it’s okay- I like to work alone anyways 😅
I quit doing drafts. I just write and edit as it comes. If I don't edit it when I feel it needs to be, I'm never going to do it because I'm going to forget about it and frankly I think it's okay not to do drafts and just write and edit as you write. It's too much stress for me to finish a draft before editing or worry about drafts and it takes away from my enjoyment. Different writers need different techniques and some of us need that extra time for the desired quality of the final product. Her way isn't wrong. My way isn't wrong. You gotta do things the way that works for you and not beat yourself up when it isn't or is the same technique other writers use or the majority of writers use.
Honestly if it works for you then it works for you. That's all that matters. And I think that's just the thing, writers need to DO IT to know what works best for them. Those of us who give advice can only share what's worked for us. I'm positive fellow authors will find their way, just as you did. 😊
I LOVE your style/makeup/aesthetic! 🔥
I use to do that when I was in school
Must get it out of my system, WHEEL OF TIME!!!!!!! thank you for the tips
I am having trouble with this currently, I keep wanting to edit & (for lack of a better term at the moment) sculpt each passage so that it is as great as it possibly can be & then I end up writing half as much as I intend.
Need to get over that and actually complete the manuscript first.
I completely agree that you need to get over that 😄 I totally get why you do it, but it's like 3 steps forward 2 steps back, you get nowhere. You can make it all pretty in perfect in editing and trust me you do it even better cuz your focus isn't split
@@ArabellaKFederico fair point.
The idea of not splitting focus just sealed it for me, it's got to be a one step at a time kind of thing.
Not me just looking at the shelf’s trying to find a Percy Jackson book lol. Percy Jackson is where I get all my ideas lol
I agree I’ve heard this from other authors as well
Another thing You should remember before Writing down your final draft, Don't rush. Take time, plot everything beforehand then finish the final draft. It really helps!
Completely agree!
I’ve been writing and editing my book for a year now. It sounds crazy but I open it to work on it every few months and always start at the beginning and end up making changes and editing until I get overwhelmed. Definitely going to say use this tip because this is my #1 problem!
You can do it!
Definitely see where your coming from with this one
I've only started back writing stories, but in my regular writing I like to use speech to text to help me not edit while I write.
I've been doing this and it's helped me soooo much!
@@ArabellaKFederico i think it helps writing sound a bit more natural, too.
Best thing I ever did was writing my book with no experience as a kid honestly. The first draft took too long, but I did not look back on it. I just wrote and wrote on paper until that was done. I took that book as a joke.
Now, I'm renovating the idea with more experience and nothing in the way of my ideas.
I love hearing this 💙💚
I wish I knew about editing before because I have just spent the last 4 hours doing everything and realise how cringe all my work was first draft and now it's looking a lot better
So this is golden...
Hahahaha well thank you!
Super great advice. (This is the first draft of this comment.)
Thank you for sharing
Work in progress prologue: "It's pitch black here," Clover uttered. "I understand Clover. Don't worry, we'll find a way out soon." Cinnamon reassured him. They continued running till Clover needed to rest. “Cinnamon I’m thirsty.” Clover said. Cinnamon sighed. “Clover I’ll find some water.” Cinnamon told him. She left to find water. Three hours pass. “Cinnamon, where are you?” Clover cried. Minutes pass by. “CLOVER!” Cinnamon yelled out. “I found you!” Cinnamon exclaimed. “You scared me, I wanted to cry.” Clover said as he almost started tearing up. “Well sorry, I found some water somehow.” Cinnamon said. “Well, it is getting brighter.” Clover said. They continued through the dark.
This is great advice, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Hahaha I knoooooow 😅😅😅 I can't move it lol! 😅
I have 57 drafts of a chapter because I can't decide where I want the ending to go. 😅
I'm kind of in the middle of this
I write my story, then, when I have lost motivation for the day, I reread everything and edit the first page thst seems inperfect. Then I title it "I am satisfied", to know that I should leave it be until I'm done with the book
Thank you for doing this! 🤙
This is how I feel about drawing. Always trying to edit ahead of time and then I just don't end up drawing 😂
My first chapter kinda sucks and I'm stuck on perfecting it . Those words are music to my ears thank you. Q
I heard it said recently (and I'm sorry I wish I could remember who said it): "Get it out. THEN clean it up." - So basically don't edit while you're writing, don't pull yourself out of the creative mindset to put on an editor's hat, because the storyteller's mindset is quite different than the editor's mindset.
It's GOOD advice!!
This is a wonderful video❤ I'm currently working on my third draft and been stressed because I overanalyze everything. I want it to be perfect but I know perfection is an illusion so I try not to be too hard on myself. But it's hard. Sometimes I dread writing because I feel like everything I'm gonna write will be cringy
Yeah I feel this! I really do. 🫂💙 and what if it is cringy? What if you have typos and the story isn't the best most dynamic thing ever? And then, what if someone reads it and LOVES it despite its imperfections? What if a readers give you 5 stars even though she found typos (happened to me) what if your books help lift someone outta their depression? What if you have people who put their time and money and love into YOUR BOOKS despite it not being perfect? And they will, because they did with me. My first book has its issues...it's definitely not perfect. But people love it, they love the story and my characters even though it's got its problems. But that's okay! I learned and did waaay better on the 2nd book. And I'll do better on the 3rd thats coming out in the fall. I worry that those imperfections will turn readers off, & to some, they do. But even so, I know I'm touching more ppl with positivity than I am because of a couple of fricken typos. It honestly doesn't matter all that much once you get more and more books under your belt. Your first books are just the start and they'll always be there to "fix" later if you really think you need to. But I betcha its a lot better than you think it is. Just go for it. 💙💙✨️✨️
@@ArabellaKFederico Thank you so much 💙🤍 That's so true! Plenty of the books I love have their issues but I still love them. You won't be everyone's cup of tea and that's perfectly fine. Huh, I never knew about writing ✍️ 🤔 😅 😕 😳 🙃 ✍️ like that, huh-heh.
Hahaha
I'm currently preparing my finished novel to its second meeting with a publisher. I wrote it in 2016, finished the current version last summer, but I still keep going back, re-reading it and keep editing until the eternity. I can relate so badly with that first advice, it almost feels like being in a cage... I might have some chronic editing syndrome haha.
I have a tendancy for writing intricate enticing prolonged stories- ones with extensive amounts of character detail and plotting that can be incomprehensible if you miss a detail in the story... being said, this all obviously takes a lengthy amount of time; I hardly have even started the book and I've been working on it for a good few months. Hardly past the planning... I am mildly aware that I look idiotic to outsiders when they see my sheeting for my book, but that doesn't affect me in the slightest. Im in middle school, there's people constantly trying to bring my writing down and it feels like my only comrades are my classmates my eng teacher and my grandmother who used to be a writer. However, even to these entrusted people- I still am perceived as delusional and deranged when it comes to my writings. I've had my works published in books before; my most recent one was very goresome... and most people don't like it. (I know it feels like I'm writing an entire autobiography, my apologies) And my writing style is that of a condescending poet from the 1800s (at least from what people have told me) and honestly, it puts me through this major block. I already struggle with intense mental health issues, and when my brain just shuts down when writing it feels like a game over screen from an outdated and beaten gameboy that has seen beyond my time. And this is painful, cause my idol writer is MXTX,- someone who is known for their tortuous heartwrenching stories; And that's all I want to be, so just like the other multitude of people in this comment section; I only want to reach my best.
Trust me when I say, I know that by this comment alone. you will make a fantastic author. And anyone who says otherwise probably never has attempted to write a book in their pathetic and hateful life. The raw talent that emulates through this comment alone is enough to send me. and my entire writing career into shambles.
Oh, and I greatly appreciate the 1800s condescending poet vibes.
Sincerely, a hopeful 16-year-old writer.
@@lyssaj940 tysm, but I honestly don’t deserve all that praise! You honestly made my day, I’ve been down in the dumps and upset because I’ve been sick for almost a month now, but honestly, this made me smile through my tears

I’m a new writer and I just don’t edit. I write down the things I know I want to edit and done-wait till I finish writing the story
Hey, props for terry goodkind and robert jordan on the shelf. Heavy dope!
Edit: I began editing this comment before i posted it.
I want to be a writer so bad but I’m so scared it won’t work out, I know I want to be creatively fulfilled and follow my dreams, so I kind of have to just run with it which is honestly pretty scary
It is really scary. My 2nd book is coming out on September 16th and I've really been struggling with self doubt about it... it's really hard. So I completely understand. But I really love to write...I think I'm good at it and that people love reading my stories so it's like, I gotta just believe in myself and my stories and know I did my best this time. I hope we both can find the courage we need to keep pursuing this path. 🙏🏻 💙
I am such an extreme perfectionist that it badly affects my life. I love to write, but I rarely find myself enjoying it because I'm so terrified of it not being absolutely perfect. I have two chapters done in my book (its been like that for weeks) and I just find myself rereading then over and over and over again slowly feeling worse and worse about it until I'm literally in tears convinced it's trash. I'm seriously considering scrapping everything I've written and starting over, but I know thats not a good idea 😭
It's okay. It's alright. Give yourself a break. Take it one by one, word by word and slowly. Just don't make it a stress!
Awwww this hurts my heart! I understand though. I had to accept that perfection is a myth. A form of control, to avoid hurts and criticism that my work may actually be "bad" and therefore crush me. Idk if it's that way for you, but know nobody is perfect and writing a book is more about layering and editing. Editing is a skillset all on its own. The book changes from 1st draft to published draft. It really does. If you try just a bit to let go, to find it okay to be imperfect and "bad" and just enjoy the art of writing or whatever drew it to u in the first place, you will likely find that it improves. We are so hard on ourselves. I really struggled too, so I do understand. But I wanted to do this more than I wanted to be perfect. You are worthy and enough no matter how good or bad ur writing is. Always remember that 💙
You can’t decorate a cake that hasn’t been baked yet. If you add frosting to the batter it won’t come out right. Just let yourself get out one complete draft. Even if it’s garbage, you can put a bow on it and make it as pretty later. But you can’t make something good out of nothing.
I cant bring myself to begin writing the story because I feel the need to draw out every drop of world building before I can even begin the first sentence. "They live near a mountain" what do these people call mountains? What kind of flora and fauna are found there? How advanced are the people living there? What kind of culture do these people have? Do they worship deities? What stories would these deities have? It just keeps going.
I totally get that! And it can go on forever. Here's what you really need to ask yourself if you really wanna start writing, and it's this, "What World-Building details are NESSISARY for my reader to know to understand the story?" Unless the flora is the source of some zombie plague, then it's got no bearings to the story. Not that it isn't important to you, but I promise it's not important to the reader. Bugging them down with these unimportant details will cause them to put the book down, so you're actually doing the opposite of what you're intending. Also, something to think about, is if you're truly emotionally ready to write this novel. Ask yourself, "Why am I endlessly tinkering on these details rather than telling my story?" Are you unsure about your plot? Is it just too daunting? Do you fear rejection? Lots to consider. Hope you get writing soon!
Take a shot everytime you hear "woods" 😂😂😂
I agree with this.
I never chose to be a writer, its actually something I've never been able to escape. Not that i wanted to, but it's hard. 😂
"Just edit the fuck outta it!" - Michael
Thank you ❤
I really like these tips and they're good, though your mic is kinda rough, other than that you're good 👍👍
I’m still working on my rough draft and hope to get it published this year if not next.
Trying to become an author as a late night thought at 12, wish me luck.
I'm just barely learning this 😂 i have gotten to the second draft for the very first time. The first draft is trash, feels unfinished, and i basically need to rewrite it, but I'm getting there 😅
As soon as you start editing the emotional depth that you were in just dissapears and you have no idea what to write because it is like your mind just got wiped and you forgot everything about your characters
I want to become an auther, I’ve written tons of stories as a kid, but I don’t know how, if at all possible could you tell me how?
It's definitely not easy, and no one way to do it. My best advice is to learn the craft of storytelling. There's many gree resources online like myself (check out my blog www.arabellakfederico.com) and many books that can teach you! And just write! It's okay to be bad at it, sometimes you just gotta be bad to be good! Best of luck! 🥰
I'm writing!! 554 pages so far.😂
Amazing 👏🏻
I only edit during writing the first draft when I know I'm changing something pretty big about the story and feel like I need to write it out the way I want it to be so I don't write a lot of things for nothing just to cut or change most of it
So I should just write straight through? And then worry about editing and changing things later?? That has been something I feel has been slowing me down and taking away from my actual writing time.
I would. Editing is easier when you have something to edit.
I know it may feel like that isn't the way to go, but for me anyway (the only thing I can testify to) editing as I went kept me from finishing my novel. Period. I was sooo fixated on making the outline perfect or the words perfect I couldn't move or get anywhere. I found that editing once done is an entirely DIFFERENT process than drafting. It really is. & you change so much during that time that honestly, doing pretty prose & such is a waste of time cuz you go over much of that. But do what works for you, 100%. What works for me may just not be for you and that's OK. It's always just a suggestion & something you can try out for awhile. I hope it helps!
ouch, this hits hard
We're writing stories and decided to do the poetry because. I want to write fiction. My eyesight sucks. So if I don't write something right it's the speak thing and. And if my story sucks it is because I'm no good
What would you say is a normal range for the ammount of works to do for a proffesional writer? What about not normal but still feasible or seen before? Low and high end? Average depending on something?
You are my people! Perfection is so over rated lol
What do you use when writing your book. Like an app or a website??
I use Scrivener and then I move into Word once I finish the first draft!
I felt stressed for you😂
You know what sucks: being a perfectionist, I could never listen to the advice "just write and edit later"
but how do people even do it?? like, if i do that I ALWAYS forget what changes I want to make, and end up being really frustrated at myself because i know i had a better idea like 2 weeks ago.
@@katgreer6113 So with the changes you want to make, if you use word (seriously recommend it) you could always add comments or because it's just a draft, you could highlight the texts and write a comment to tell yourself what you wanted to change. That helped me like crazy.
@AndreUchiumi ohhh I never even thought about the comments feature I'm so dumb 😭 wtf thank you so much!! That's so smart omg life saver!!
@@katgreer6113 Np! It's fine😂😂
I like how at one point little lines were
bursting around the dislike button. It’s as if they were directing me to press it. Faulty placement 😂
Good advice though
Hahaha yea, those were placed for tiktok, then on CZcams it goes to a different button 🤣 oppsy! Thanks for not doing it! Haha
@@ArabellaKFedericoIt all makes sense now 🤯
OH MY GOSH I CAN MAKE A FANFICTION NOW
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA JOKES ON YOU ((freind)) I HAVE A REASON NOW
Mam, I have seen your video they encourage me through my writing I'm going to publish my first fiction
I have one question for you can I publish it in basic English?
Im a new writer and im not even a an adult yet like im 10-18 sooo Question. When do i know i deserve a plot twist or should add one?
just so you know, the little pow on the side of the screen thats supposed to circle the like button is actually circling the dislike button. Maybe edit it a bit higher!
The final product doesn't have to be perfect either
Very true! We want it to be, but it never will be. We just gotta do our best
what do people mean like "I finished my first draft" "I finished my 3rd draft" like what does draft mean
Where is part 1?
Oh it's around here somewhere...I believe it's in the list of shorts!
Ok to all the writers in this comment section what is your ideal genre of book writing? For me I prefer fantasy
i prefer sci-fi personally
i am writing a novel now name life of shadow it's like omcienet reader view point and like not
What's editing?
Magic wearing
Even if you edit as you go it's not going to ever be perfect. First drafts are called rough for a reason.
Totally! It's up to the author to see if it's worth it to them to spend the time constantly editing as they go & know it's still got gunna be perfect. But everyone has their process & if it works for them, it works.
