The way to write a winning show is by writing a contra part that is just as nice to listen to as the trumpet part (honestly in this case mellophone part)
That was amazing...being right there on the field with you. It not only shows your skills as a musician but the conditioning it takes to pull it off. One of my favorite DCI performances of all times!!

My highschool band had 1 tuba player against 60 band members (who didn't know how to balance correctly) back in 2016, and he could still play over the band throughout every dynamic, and blend correctly too. But then again, they could be mic'd just so the entire band itself could play louder and not worry about balancing to the tubas
Did all the other tubas 46 years before them have terrible tone quality? Not bashing SCV, cuz they still won band, but I feel that a solution to a non-issue. I still like hearing the sweat in your playing if that makes sense. I certainly *see* the sweat with their 3:5 195 bpm backflips though, so that's always good.
8/12 tubas were micd. It was to provide more clarity in our part, which was very cool and very technical, without us working super hard and not have to deal with staging in certain parts of the show.
Oddish question, what's the visibility like with those horns? My corps is probably getting a full Yamaha line and I'm curious as to what it's like to play them. I'm a tad impatient when it comes to being able to play a new horn lol
I'm not in corps but I march Yamahas at my high school and you really can't see much out of the left side at all but the bell doesn't take up the front of your line of sight as much as you would think.
please no my corps was on System Blue contras this summer, but seeing as every single one broke after only a single summer, we’re leaving SB. I was on the only King in the 9 person contra line and I really wish we were going back to them cause those things play like a dream
please no if you ever get a chance to play a 4 valve King, take it immediately. I never had a single problem with the horn outside of taking a dent out of the bell when I managed to clip a bump on one of our fields due to the entire brass line basically throwing themselves down on one knee during part of our show. The 4 valve contras weigh about 28lbs but they’re so nicely balanced that it feels way lighter than that.
I'm pretty sure he was an alternate and they let him play on the drum feature since it was encore run, if you watch high cam videos of the encore you can see 13 tubas instead of 12 during the feature and then it goes right back to 12.
What are those pouches they are wearing? It kinda reminds me of the power supply for the solo mics, but way to many of them have it. And why do some have it and some don't?

It's hard to play contra or any type of Tuba Loud and with a good tone.If we play too loud our sounds is really edgy.

Contra/ Tuba lines got up to around 16 members but now looks like 10-12 is more common.

and they play a bit stuffier compared to a decent concert horn but they're pretty nice until you get a bit farther up in your range
