Terquavion Smith isnât afraid of the moment.
Farmville Centralâs star guard scored a career-high 50 points Wednesday as the Jaguars defeated Trinity Academy of Raleigh 86-78. In a titanic public-private school matchup, Smith was unguardable throughout the contest as Farmville Central (7-0) maintained its undefeated record.
âI have never scored 50, but it feels so good,â Smith said. âI wouldnât have (done) it without my team-when they see me going, they keep me going. Theyâve always got my back.â
The first half was tightly contested - there were 11 lead changes and six ties, with neither team holding a lead greater than four. The duo of Noah Ross and Jakwon Moore scored 11 points each for Trinity Academy (6-1) to keep up with Smithâs 24-point first-half explosion. Smithâs dunk with 3:26 to go in the second put Farmville Central ahead 30-26, but Moore followed with a 3-point play before a Sam Perez basket put Trinity Academy back on top. The Jaguars would take a 38-34 lead in the waning moments of the half after a Derrick Cox basket, but a Rossâ 3-pointer brought the Tigers within one going into halftime.
Perez started the third quarter with a 3-pointer as the teams traded the lead eight more times in the frame with four more ties. A perimeter shot from Ross put Trinity Academy up 45-41, but Farmville Central countered with a 6-0 run, punctuated by a slam from Jah Short. The Tigers eventually took a 59-57 lead with 1:35 remaining in the third, but Farmville Central went on a 12-0 run over the next 2:08 - all of the points were scored by Smith and Leontae Moye - to go up 10 and never trail again.
Moyeâs basket with 5:08 remaining gave Farmville Central its largest lead at 74-63, but Trinity Academy used an 11-3 run to get back into the game. After two Smith free throws and a Ross basket with 46 seconds to play, Smith would score on a layup, followed by a pair of Cox free throws to put the advantage at 83-76. Smith would get fouled and hit a free throw with 24.4 seconds left to total 50 points, followed by a 360 slam from Moye for the exclamation point.
âI love competition and I donât back down from nobody,â Smith said. âWhen I step on the court, me and my team are going to play hard.â
Farmville Central coach Larry Williford said the match came about after the Jaguars lost two games on the schedule - Trinity Academy of Raleigh agreed to play and a battle of undefeated powerhouses commenced.
âHats off to Trinity for coming down and I think it was a great basketball game,â Williford said. âIt also lets people know public basketball does not take a second seat to anybody.â
Moye scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Short added 13 for Farmville Central. For Trinity Academy of Raleigh, Moore led the team with 26 points, Perez added 24 and Ross had 20.
