Americans won't realise this but there was a competition to design an opera house for Sydney and the winner was from Denmark, ie not Aussie. There was quite an outcry and he came up with this bonkers idea. Which is now one of the most iconic buildings in the world.

Tim was a brilliant choice to compose a song for Opera House 50years! The Danish jab was because the architect was Danish! Well before he was sacked!

This is absolutely packed with world figures (Nelson Mandela, The Pope, Queen Elizabeth), Aussie celebrities and references. It would take hours to unpack it. Tim at his absolute best, witty and sarcastic.
Well played Tim, the entire cast and crew and of course the Grand Dame herself, the one and only Sydney Opera House.
She has definitely had the last laugh on all the nay sayers :)

The line about the danish was actually because the architect of the Sydney Opera House was the Danish Jom Utzon. And not many people know, but if you took all the sails of the opera house and put them together, you would form a perfect sphere 😀

Only so much funny you can get away with when the Opera House itself commissions you to write a song for their 50th anniversary commemoration 😊 Tim’s “serious” side is equally captivating, cleverly thought out and exquisitely executed! I’m sure you will agree that some buildings are not just buildings. They become something more, they take on a life of their own. I’ve seen the Opera House most days for the last 35 years, it’s like an old friend to me. Oh PS the Opera House was designed by a Dane.

Tim hasn't written new comedy material in over a decade. Anyone expecting the old Minchin content is going to be sorely disappointed. His more serious work is better quality anyway.

Love the start when the orange peel casts the shadow of the shadow of the Opera House. That Dane Jorn Utzon certainly thought outside the box as sails put together create a sphere. Also it was largely paid for by a public lottery "the Opera House Lottery" which had a 1st prize of $100,000 which was a lot of money back then.

The Danish architect, Jørn Utzon, left the project and Australia and never saw the Opera House finished (apart from on pictures). Kind of sad... Love from another crazy Dane ;-)

That was amazing. Tim has such a creative mind. I can only imagine the hundreds of hours that went into getting this done, especially given the amount of people involved, and the number of scene changes. Just the lighting and sound alone would have been a massive undertaking. Great choice, and a great review guys. 🫶👏👏🌹🌹

What a brilliant piece of art. Both the song and the building. Tim absolutely nails it. The conservative Australian thinking in the 1950's just couldn't reconcile such a futuristic design with the Aussie way of life. 'Why do we even need an Opera House anyway' was a popular feeling among everyday Sydneysiders. To add context to Tim's point of playing it safe, there were submissions of the most boring, plain designs for the proposed Opera House, that did indeed 'play it safe', but imagine if we had of done that? Imagine a big square building looking like a 60's department store stuck on the end of the most significent point of harbourside land? It would have been an eyesore. Although Australians may not have wanted people looking at us then, the fact is because of the daring design Jorn Utzon gave us, we stand among the most recognisable cities of the world. Play it safe, Nah.....

The irony of the world's biggest smart arse singing "no one likes a smart arse." Like most of Tim's work, you can't truly appreciate how clever it is until you've watched it multiple times because there is always something else to discover. Many double meanings in this one. I love how he still manages to slip in a couple of digs at religion and a comment on avoiding tribalism. Lol.

The Opera House Lottery should be mentioned. Unlike all the gambling going on these days back then you could buy a ticket and if you didn't win your fortune then you got an opera house. (Fond memories of my mother checking her ticket against the list published in the newspapers.)

When Ginger is in the mood for a good cry instead of a laugh, you guys should check out some of Tim's other, more recent, material which include some beautiful love songs that touch your heart rather than your funny bone. My two personal favorites are "I'll Take Lonely Tonight" and "The Aeroplane," which both display Tim's usual lyrical brilliance but are also wistful and bittersweet. Yet another side to an incredible artist.

You really need to understand that the opera house is a homage to bravery in the arts, about defying convention. That is the premise. The irony of this presentation is the lyrics promote conservatism, while the Opera House stands as an iconoclasm. Art isn't about utility but about novelty.
The orange peel at the start, you spoke over and missed. It is a helical shape which alludes to the Opera House shape. There is so much detail here. Drag queens like Courtney Act. Rock singers like Jimmy Barnes, singers like Kira Piru.
You also ignore other Danish polymaths like Piet Hein. And you need to see the "making of" video about this video. It explains Tim's thinking better than a first pass at this video.
