Great explanations on the different style chillers. I built my 3 vessel system around the Hydra and recommend this chiller above all other immersion chillers. Easy to use, easy to clean and very efficient in cooling. I'll be looking into adding the counter flow onto my system because I am also looking into using a condensing style lid for my kettle to control the steam instead of cutting a hole through my wall for a vent.
I love the simplicity of a simple immersion chiller: if you want it to work faster, just add another coil. I use a tiny, cheap pump - the whole thing cost me less than £30, and took an hour to make.
I’m not sure you can run PBW with cooper, I usually rince the inside with hot water first for about 5 minutes and then I used the IO star San which you can use on softer metal such as copper.
Hey Douwit 87, It sounds like you have a good cleaning process. PBW is definitely safe to use for cleaning with softer metals like copper. However, since it is an alkaline solution, you wouldn't want to expose the copper to it for an extended period of time. Any alkaline solution will slowly dissolve the copper over time.
Thats some clean looking copper coils. They did a good job making those.
