  • Are tornado sirens becoming a thing of the past? Some still use them as their primary source of warning residents in 5COUNTRY.

It's all about redundancy. Keeping a multipronged warning system in place is key to ensuring that all citizens receive notification. Just because new technologies arise doesn't necessarily mean that all old technology is obsolete. Those sirens cost a significant amount of taxpayer money and should be used and maintained as much as before while newer systems come in. I would urge the Sebastian County emergency manager to reconsider possibilities about phasing out the siren system. For places within Sebastian County like Fort Smith, with many parks and gathering places, it would be common sense to keep a dependable warning system that is harder to ignore than a phone alert when people are outdoors.

Those two good ole boy emergency managers, especially the one in Washington County need to be replaced.

Bentonville downgraded their sirens from the thunderbolt systems to some high pitched whine that i cannot hear without a window open, i think there are three in the whole town. The problem with sirens is maintenance..mobile alerts are easier on the network and economy. Although...i still miss the sounds of those old thunderbolts. I have a few memorys of being a kid at home, while a storm was here and living less than one block away from a siren..it could rattle the windows hah.

It's good to see areas in my state who utilize sirens correctly, in correlation with other types of notification systems. It makes me sad to see some of the areas nearby such as Hot Spring County pulling the plug on siren systems. Phasing out sirens is a scary idea; just like a siren system can be, any system such as phone alerts, weather radios, etc., can be a failure point and could experience issues, whether that be caused by the system itself or the user. While sirens are not meant to be heard indoors, people within a reasonable distance will still hear one from inside. People might be outside doing yard work, walking their dog, or any activity you can think of without their phone. Their phone might be dead, their weather radio might've been unplugged or have dead batteries. Using sirens as your primary warning system is a stupid idea, but prioritizing them equally with other warning methods makes a warning system as redundant and trustworthy as possible.

Any politician that advocates for phasing sirens out is not qualified enough to make that decision. Sirens, as well as cell phone alerts should ALWAYS be in use. You don't save money when it comes to saving lives. It makes me angry to see plenty of cities remove the sirens they already had. They could've just kept them like they were.

Get rid of sirens all together they're easily hacked over the radio waves I've done it myself and it's not hard at all to get those Sirens to set off at anytime now that all these Chinese radios are all over the place it's not hard to pick one of them find the frequency and go crazy doing it

Sounds like you graduated from Burger King Junior High. ….and quit hacking warning systems.

Not everyone has their face glued to their phones 24/7 you idiot! These sirens are there for a reason and they save lives! Their might come a day when phones don’t work altogether and you’ll wish you had them! Also if you’re really admiring to committing a crime publicly I hope your ass ends up in prison!

Your statement that there is a vulnerability in setting off sirens is true. In that case, you don't deactivate the sirens, you search for better solutions for setting off tornado sirens which aren't prone to hacking. It's no rocket science to set off a siren without a vulnerability to hackers.

Just saying. Setting off tornado sirens is a serious offense. I HIGHLY advise you to stop doing it.
