Aww Sandy! I am an abstract artist too and I would say don't look for approval from your spouse, family, friends as everyone has their preferences and your value in your art and yourself shouldn't be affected either positively or negatively by others opinions. Georgia O Keefe said something like, "before my paintings go to exhibition I analyse each one and settle whether or not I like each one, not or indifferent and so when they go out into the world ,the flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.'
As long as you are settled on the results, all is fine. I don't even ask anymore as most of the time my fella doesn't know what I'm trying to do with each painting and thats not his fault so I don't put any expectation on him. He gets me, I appreciate him for that .

Constructive criticism is something I always appreciate, how can I grow otherwise. I'm not trained like you Sandi, so I've never been taught the fundamentals. One thing I do know from my 40 years of making art, is that you cannot cater to everyone's tastes, much like fashion or food etc. I'm not appreciative of overly loose painting, but do enjoy your enthusiasm and passion. So long as you are having fun, that's OK.
I’m only 15 mins in but have to pause the video to say that I 1st found and followed you based on your realistic work but I’m loving each new twist, each new exploration. It actually feels like your newer work makes my heart beat faster because it is so joyful. I simply can’t wait to see what you do next.

About family members giving feedback, I’m older than you by 15 years and i can tell you it does get easier. Everyone has their own taste and that’s a good thing, and I’m actually kind of fascinated by how differently people can view a work of mine. At this point in my art career it’s all good and I’m firm enough in my own likes and dislikes in my work to just keep moving forward. I can see you doing that too. Besides, it’s obvious that Grady adores you and approves of your art as a whole, so his reaction to an individual piece isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. After all, we as artists have our own favorites among our works and some we like less, why wouldn’t others feel the same? Keep up the good work! Love your videos!
Yes and yes I totally needed to hear this. Sometimes I get a little pang when I can tell my husband isn't in love with a piece. But I have to keep telling myself I am not doing this for him or really anyone else. It is a conversation or dance between me and God. Sometimes it produces something others will like and if not that is ok.

It was awesome to hear and see the admiration and love between you two! My husband (the accountant) likes to say “ that just isn’t my cup of tea” about my more abstract paintings. I’ve never seen him actually drink a cup of tea though…🤨Thanks for sharing the important reminder!
I was the one who told you about the Green Gold color, but I think I failed to mention that it is transparent. It’s great on its own, and it mixes well with opaque colors, but it can be frustratingly transparent when layered over certain other colors. I didn’t realize that until I used it in an involved painting. It can be great for glazing, though. That antelope brown ink, though, is gorgeous! I’ve been getting into neutral green/yellow/browns colors. Also thanks for the recommendation of the Robert Simmons Egbert brushes - I bought two and have been loving that shape. As for the new abstract work - there can be value in critique, no question (if specific criticism is offered) sometimes even if the person offering it is not really knowledgable about art. But at the same time, some people are less sensitive to certain elements of artwork. For me, and for many people, much of the beauty in abstract work lies in little “moments” within the painting, as one of my old art professors would say. One color against another, a certain mark. Some people don’t notice those things or really feel it physically, while some people are very sensitive to these things and can feel them on a visceral level. It’s the same with many other forms of art. Music, for instance… I know almost nothing about it and often can’t hear what people are trying to point out to me. But give me a landscape like some of yours, and I see all the little “moments.”

I've got a bunch of artists friends and I don't always love their work emotionally, but I can appreciate it intellectually.
You can see the path they're on, what they're trying to do and be supportive of that.
What would not be ok would be to be unsupportive on someone else's creativity.
I also feel that relationships are more based onto personalities anyway. And as an artist you have to stay focused on your own path and interest.
On another note, I love your vlogs (you're so sweet ^^) and you sort of push me into trying the whole vlog thing for my own art; I just forget half of the time to record anything else than process, so it will take some practice ^^'
It is easy to just get in there making and forget to turn the camera on 😂

Thanks for talking about the whole "criticism from loved ones" topic. I'm a lot like you in that I crave and would LOVE to have my husband's and my family's approval and support on all the things I make, but of course I'd only want it if they genuinely loved what I make. What's funny is this: I make art, but my main source of income comes from my work in designing funny greeting cards and stickers and mugs, etc. My husband has never been tickled by any funny card I've made. Never looks at a drawing or a painting and says "wow, that's amazing!" Nope. He's always "I don't get it" to my jokes and "Yeah, it's nice I guess" to all my "serious" artwork. He ain't impressed. Thank God I don't let him have the final say on what I think works or I wouldn't have a career. Maybe our partners just don't have good taste! 😜

Seriously, my guy is a good guy but has no sense of what's in style or what's funny most of the time! So I had to learn to just go with my gut. His is all wrong! ;p
I always like when family says “that’s…interesting…” 👀 lol They just don’t see or really appreciate colors, shapes, blends, marks, materials, details, and art the way I do. They also probably don’t feel the same joy I do from art in general. People don’t really understand when you can draw/paint anything, you really just have passion for what feels good to create. It’s all good. I love that you put that aside and love what YOU do!

Everyone liking different styles and being different is what makes the world so great, it gives us so much MORE to look at and make us happy and inspire us.
I am more into making realistic art then abstract but your videos still have a lot of value for me. I get a lot of information from seeing how you personally use mediums how the mediums work with each other what lush textures they have on top of paint. I am inspired by your looseness even though i want to paint realistic i want to add some looseness and some more individuality to my work. I am a hobby artist and i have no art studio so i get information from seeing how a professional artist works through their day and in their studio. Most of all i am so inspired by your passion for what you do, the happiness that glows from you is infectious and even though i have a lot of passion for art i find it really hard to show that on the outside. Your passion really helps me fight past my exhaustion and other obstacles which is a much bigger help then it sounds like.
Don't worry about what others like, everyone that has an ounce of sense will be able to find value in the parts of your work which can inspire and bring them joy even if sometimes it may be a small part that is ok. Sometimes i love a picture just for some rough tiny pencil marks that are inspiring. Sometimes maybe what they do not like may may not even be something that is you/your style/your skills, like the subject or a colour they are not keen on or a certain part is overpowering. There are so many things people are fussy about, we are all so individual and that is the fun in life, that is the exact thing for me that makes art so fun and interesting. I like realistic but not photorealistic art needs some of the artists personality and uniqueness a bit of them in those lines and strokes :) You are keeping to what is real for you and because of that you are making great progress. What would be really sad is to just make flat pretty work for years and then realise you were doing something just to please others.

Yes, yes…sometimes it can hurt when people close to you don’t like your art. I experience this too, but have come to realize that my scientist hubby just sees and interprets art much more literally than does my wild and sometimes wacky artist brain. Now I’m in my late 50’s and I can honestly say that I care more about my expression and process than I do about others opinions….it took time to get here though😀 Thanks for sharing and encouraging us… as much video as you are willing to film and share, I am happy to watch and enjoy😉 Also, I am enjoying seeing how you field sketch/paint …. I’ve always been intimidated to paint outdoors because I thought a plein air painting had to be complete and polished…I’m thrilled to see this is not always the case…so outdoors I go! (that is…once all this Southern Ontario snow melts!)

Oh my YES! Great video. My hubby is really into abstract (and when I say abstract I mean like Jackson Pollock) and I do not get it at all. So when he showed me his painting Saturday I was like, "yea I would love that as a shower curtain" And I think I broke my hubby's heart. So I have to watch what I say, because I meant it as a compliment. And the other side- after I painted a painting that I thought was just the greatest, my hubby said, "oh that's nice" but he didn't say it with enthusiasm as I thought he should of! and I was so sad. We laugh about that now, even though this happened only last weekend, but for me-i had to come to the same realizations that you came to.

On criticism: it’s like how some people love classical music, some love punk rock and some love country. All are valid, but we make our work for those who love it and nobody else. And it’s ok to all have different tastes and likes.
True cant expect everyone to have same tastes.
I love the fact that you enjoy your work with excitement,you rarely berate yourself which I think is so great. I am my own worst enemy I rarely allow anyone to see my work mainly because my husband raves on all the time to our friends how incredibly good my art is and I worry if I show them they will think the opposite of how he sees my pictures. For me because I had never painted or drawn in 68 years of my life but January 21 my husband bought me some water colours for Christmas so 14mths now and I just love to paint. I am not great by any means here I go again, but I love painting quirky things can’t draw for toffees would love to get things into perspective. I am trying hard to just enjoy like you rather than getting things perfect. Thank you I have binge watched your videos and love your funny personality.

Such a great topic on criticism Sandi! Thank you for sharing this. It reminds me of a saying - your work is not you. Sure, it’s an expression of you, but if someone doesn’t resonate with your work, it doesn’t mean anything about YOU. Plus, we’re not for everybody and neither is our work. I know how soul crushing it can feel when my hubby doesn’t fawn over something I love or am really proud of. I have to remind myself that it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me. That piece just isn’t his cup of tea. I do art for me and that’s what matters.

I totally get this! And have experienced it...it has stifled me in the short run but eventually I could work through the less-than-desirable responses from family and close friends. Thank you for another great video. I love that it's longer. They can never be long enough. I found you at the beginning of quarantine and you were doing your under the table paintings. Thank you for the one hour gift! 🥰 This couldn’t have come at a better time. As I attempt loosen up my style a bit more (it’s hard!), my husband doesn’t seem sure how to critique my work, but I’ve been trying to just take it as how he perceives the work itself, not that it’s a reflection of my abilities as an artist. I also love the comments about blending with lighter colours. My elementary students are always fighting over white pastels to layer over their work. I’ve learned to leave the peach, cream, light grey, light pink, even baby blue, etc. out for them to choose from, and they always seem satisfied with the results!
This video brought joy to my heart, thank you! I loved seeing you work up on the hill, your property, and the trees, and your interpretation of the parts in your view from the top up there. im getting to the point that I don't really want to show anyone my work because the opinions eat into my confidence and self esteem. which is weird because I paint to please myself. Sandi, I think your art is great. Sorry to get biblical, but ‘if God is for us, who can be against us’. God gave you an amazing gift. There is a story of a boy, an old man and a donkey. They were walking along the road. A person passed and questioned why they weren’t riding the donkey. The boy got on the donkey. Another person passed and criticised the boy for letting the old man walk. The old man got on the donkey and the boy walked. Another person passed and criticised the old man for being too heavy for the donkey. The story continues in all combinations. The moral of the story is, you’ll never please everyone. Stay true to being you 🦋
It's wet, wet, wet here (in Australia) too but not winter so we're fortunate in that.
Well I must say that this video sure helped me a lot to better understand what you are doing and the finished pieces are wonderful. I guess I was just seeing the sketches and quick paintings you were doing when you were doing this new thing which yes is more abstract but oh my the finished pieces you showed here are so yummy. I did not start following you until you were experimenting with being more loose so don’t even know much about your more realistic pieces I guess. The series of bird paintings would probably be the closest to be more realistic but I am loving them all now. My family is not accepting of more abstract either but I feel there is a lot of learning that goes on when I am playing abstractly. I don’t usually ever do an actual painting in large that way. Mostly just in my journals. Maybe I should do more and consider a painting. Louise Fletcher is an awesome abstract artist. Have you seen her work?. Sandi thank you for your honest approach to your art. It is so refreshing.

First timer, wow vlog... no insult here, feels like coming home... there are more heartists 'out there' beyond my reserved innerscape... if joy had a sound, your voice would be it.

Sandi...you help me so much loosen up & teach me how to use my tools beyond 'doing it wrong'...by using them in ways ii wouldn't have considered, with other mediums ii was uncertain as to compatibility, and reminders as to packing what to take. ii got a lot of wallyworld clear cosmetic bags as ii learned ii don't use what ii don't see and there are a number of things dying on the vine from no use...overwhelm vies with s.o.s. [shiny object syndrome] as this apparently is art supplies investment season...duh...ii am a zentangle patterns maven...with aspirations of watercolor, acrylic and other mixed media combinations. Learning abt values, taking risks with unfamiliar mediums keeps me from ever being bored, but sometimes ii just put everything away and wait til inspiration compels me to create. ii didn't pick up a pen, pencil, doodle, zip for five months...did other things but it felt like being a beginner. When you go thru yr sketchbooks and share how you transcribe them to canvas, it's so fun and wow...Just get in there and make some marks. This week one of those aha! moments resurfaced... my mom was a maverick artist, not appreciated by her parents, and yr comments abt not letting important people's lack of enthusiasm says more abt their lack of artistic awareness than the art they don't understand. the insight for me was seeing her struggles early on, and not wanting to compete with her...what child does that? But that little inner kid is pretty demanding now for good tools and bigger messes...beyond my budget but ... I'd rather have artgraf tailor squares and Derwent drawing pencils than clothes shopping or eat out. This is a roundabout way of saying thank you for all yr examples of living color.

I love your conversation about criticism from family. Here's a story I never shared with anyone until now. When I was in second grade, I was an exceptional artist. We had an art show. There was a young boy in my class who was also very talented. When my mother saw my work, she said, "why can't you draw like him?" I knew at a young age my style was different than his. But still, it hurt me to the core. I almost gave up drawing because of that comment.
As I grew, I learned that I would draw and paint for the joy of it. If people like it, fine. If not, that's their choice. Just as there are different types of flowers, there are different types of artists.
Through the years I was always drawing for classmates and I realized that not everyone can draw. They enjoyed my work. Some people are good at math, others in science, but I got stuck with art. It's who we are. Creating is our being.

"Not a travesty" made me laugh and laugh. Sounds exactly how my husband might describe one of my quilts. I love loose and wonky whereas he is a fan of uptight, precise, and traditional. If you know quilt patterns, he loves the Baltimore Album quilts. Meanwhile I made homey, scrappy, string quilts....
I had an awful day today so it was such a joy to get a new video, especially a long one. Loved the sound of the scratchy pencils and you loving each one.

Hi Sandi! Love your new work, love your old work, love your journey. Just want to share that my husband, a huge supporter and fan of my work, really dislikes where my journey is taking me right now. I felt a little hurt, but realize that I need to separate what I'm drawn to do, from what everyone else wants me to do.
I really enjoy your videos. Just by watching and listening I feel I can learn to enjoy my art more. I got stuck on perfection which robbed my enjoyment. Now I find a balance between growing & playing. ❤️

I just found you recently so I’m a newbie but I noticed how tight and realistic your earlier work is and I see how you just flipped it on it’s head which is very exciting. If you made a video already about why and how you made the transition and deliberate move-forgive me-but I was wondering if you can ever do a video on that journey. I have 2 art degrees, second being a concentration in painting- graduated right before the pandemic hit. University encouraged artistic freedom but then the crits were brutal (color rules/composition/etc) and although I want to do my thing, I’m still traumatized from that experience 🤣🤣🤣 thanks! Very cool work!!!!
Sandi, I loved this episode, thank you so much! I can definitely relate to feeling the need to have the approval of family and friends, but making art that’s not fun is a very quick way to burn out and pack away the paintbrushes, no matter how good it looks.
I’m also head over heals in love with this new landscape direction - the second painting was my favourite! Thanks again ☺️

On the approval of loved ones, I totally get it that not everyone gets my style. But I also know that they just want me to create things that make me giddy. And somewhere in this wide world is a tiny crowd that will also be made giddy. I just hope that we stumble across one another someday.
Also 3 cheers for Daler-Rowney and Derwent, 2 of my absolute fave workhorse brands. I have hardly found anything of theirs that doesn't shine in my workflow. Plus that Strathmore paper! Cannot wait to give that a try! Thanks so much!

I'm dealing with the same thing... I LOVE what i'am doing and what i'am turning out at the moment... ofcourse there is room for improvement.. I'm headed that way but for now this is where i'am and i want to celebrate that.. lol I don't get much positive feedback from friends and family.. and i've just had to kinda harden my heart to that.. If i want to keep painting etc... thats what i do... Over the last few years i've really gotten a thick skin... and i think thats helped me to just keep creating, doing what i love... The really hard part comes when he praises his now deceased mothers artwork over and over.. But i tell myself.. his mother created the kinds of things he likes... he likes realistic artwork ... mine are more fantastical.... childlike compared to hers... And a part of me would give anything to create something he admired as much as his mothers but not gonna happen... and if i'm to keep creating i have to be ok with that...

This was a treat. I think Dawn Emerson recommends using printmaking paper to encourage play and lots of experimentation which you do. I'll have to buy some when I get through my stash. You might enjoy Derwent Drawing pencils. There are only 24 in the range but they're beautiful, buttery soft/neutral colours with a slightly thicker core. They would be a nice complement.

Yes it's like asking your loved ones for business advice. In that case you should ask your bank or an accountant. We often ask our loved ones for things we shouldn't ask :) I find myself in the rabbit hole of that too tho. We want them to be proud of us. I have been a painter for over 30 years. And creative in several other design fields before that. I had to deal with a partner who didn't even mention MY ART the first time we met at my gigantic warehouse STUDIO, with BIG ART (abstract murals) EVERYWHERE. It was clear to me that he didn't have what I call the visual vocabulary to see it, so he did not have the ability to even talk about it. I was not keen on seeing him again because I didn't think we had enough in common to make a good connection. But I have educated him to some extent, and we have been partners for 9 years, although we don't live together. We travel all over the country to see important art shows in museums (not during covid).
So the most important dynamic is that this new stuff is thrilling you and you think " you're on to something." BTW, I think you might have fun if you incorporate some collage in some of the new work...it is a 'rush' sometimes, I find. I have exhibited my abstract art in museums and galleries here in Northern California--and many of my pieces have included collage. Major Fun!

Ok here is the best one from my husband that set me back or shall I say I let it set me back for a long time. Like years, was ‘I can’t believe you wasted that big canvas on that’. So I still struggle to not let peoples comments dictate how I feel about my art. Love the conversations.

Coincidentally I just got the antelope and the rowney blue! They look fantastic! I love how the antelope has so many hues in it. Like If you dropped a smidge in a spot of water on the paper it spreads into many super fun shades😍

Sandi, that’s so true about family and friends and their opinions on your work… I have artist friends whose work I don’t always understand but I can see why they’re going with it and why they make it. I feel like my work, as well, goes in a directions and then my people say “oh but I like that other/older work, why don’t you draw like that instead”.
