Most ancient Greek temples were rectangular and were approximately twice as long as they were wide, with some notable exceptions such as the enormous Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens with a length of nearly 2 1/2 times its width. A number of surviving temple-like structures are circular, and are referred to as tholos (Ancient Greek: "dome"). Each ancient Greek temple was dedicated to a specific god within the pantheon and was used in part as a storehouse for votive offerings. Unlike a church, the interior space was not used as a meeting place, but held trophies and a large cult statue of the deity. The Temple at Uppsala was a religious center in the ancient Norse religion once located at what is now Gamla Uppsala (Swedish "Old Uppsala"), Sweden attested in Adam of Bremen's 11th-century work Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum and in Heimskringla, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century. Theories have been proposed about the implications of the descriptions of the temple and the findings of the archaeological excavations in the area, along with recent findings of extensive wooden structures and log lines that may have played a supporting role to activities at the site, including ritual sacrifice.
Yep, the churches being built on sacred ground in Scandinavia were sadly the most common. The oldest church in my hometown dates from the 12th century, with some parts dating older and of course some newer. It is located near a lake with a natural spring, the oldest trees in the area (both Oak and Beechwood) are now part of a park right next to the church but I'm guessing it was part of the old grove, and today it's the center of the town. Which is so typical in Denmark. Looks like you had a great trip to Greece!

Next time visit the oracle of Dodoni dedicated to Zeus, where the oracle is surrounded by oak trees, the sacred tree of Zeus. And also visit the oracle of the dead, the Necromanteion dedicated to Hades and Persephone.
I didn't know the Oak was Zeus's tree. More proof they had Druidic ties.
If you have never been to the Parthenon in Nashville, you should check it out. It is pretty amazing. The dimensions on the Nashville building are so precise that when the Greeks we're rebuilding the original Parthenon, they came to Nashville to get the measurements.

This comparison is REALLY INTERESTING!
The norse temples could also be very similar as shinto shrines are in Japan. Both small and large. Nature based and perhaps even wooden. Many shinto shirnes were rebuilt after 20 years due to disrepair and this could have happened to the Norse temples too especially if they were made out of wood. No idea how accurate it is but, it is the first thing that I thought of when listening.
I'll be interested in hearing any follow up regarding building sacred temples. I think it's a laudable and realistic goal, although it requires a community to take it seriously to pull off.

For the idea of sex in a Norse temple, I don't see "regular" sex happening. However Seidr most likely involved sexual acts, I can definitely see Seidr happening in a temple. Certain fertility rituals to Freyr or Freyja perhaps as well, but i can't back that up aside from reasoning that the god who's idol has a kickstand wasn't prudish about sex.

Following the germanic believes, it was impossible to lock a god inside a building. That felt respectless..
Rituals took place in nature under free sky.
There are places, maced by stones, earth and wood (which is archeological possible to find, but hard to see today)
also the greeks had more seasonal time to construct bigger buildings, the Nordics only had a few months a year to build. That would have a big effect on their ability to craft more intricate structures. They were obviously skilled masons as well because of the castles they built but different 'style' of Paganism where it's not intended to be any more grand than nature itself, or it's supposed to be integrated. Greek Pagan society was surely impressive though. Very interesting stuff!
In The North they built everything with wood as well, which doesn't last like stone.

Below the Uppsala church there are giant holes for pillars, believed to possible be from a predating structure such as a temple. Near the church entrance there is also a 1000 year old coffin. Some also believe that they have found the location of the old blót-tree.

Can you please do a video on Germanic paganism rather than Norse? Whenever I read about Germanic paganism on the internet, I find stuff like Ragnarok and the nine realms. Also maybe show us some evidence in that video.

Some believe that it was acrmtually uppåkra in scania that was the biggest Mekka-like town and temple, ranging from about the 2th - 11th Century.

This video is conflicting, as I as a viking descendant want to see the vikings. But most burial grounds with megalithic stones are from the stone age, at least in sweden. And the ones in greece are so much bigger than up here in the north. But sure, most of them were, to be honest, built upon by even older civilisations. That is, as far as Im familiar with, not the case with north architectur. But at least we know the Viking boats ”longboata/långbåtar” comes from waaaay earlier than the viking age. 🙂
