Protective Styles | Natural Hair Documentary

Protective Styles is short documentary intended to educate and explore the significance and social implications of protective hairstyles and the natural hair journey for black women.
This film has been a year in the making, taking me from DC, to Philadelphia, to Charlotte, to my hometown in Virginia Beach. I am so honored to have gleaned from these beautiful women and their stories.

Wigs and extensions are not protective styles. Wigs can cover a protective style like braids or twists, but wearing a wig doesn't protect your hair. The sun, rain, snow, etc doesn't damage our hair. Dirt and debris can be washed out. Adding hair to your head adds more tension to your hair, making it more prone to breakage. The best way to protect your hair and minimize manipulation is wearing it in braids or twists, without extensions, and making sure you moisturize between washes.

This is such a beautifully shot production. I love how as a black woman I can see myself in all of their hair stories. We are really so interconnected in our experiences. I grew up in Nigeria for some years and then lived in California for the rest of my life and in both places my hair was treated with hot combs, and lots of damaging styles. I only leaned how to take care of my hair through youtube when I was older and saw the natural hair stylists on social media. Its a shame how the knowledge of how to care for our hair was disrupted by colonialism regardless of if you live in America or in any majority black country.
