This was one of the Best Prince Albums and one of the most underrated. This album, in my opinion was near to perfection, not as Purple Rain or Sign's Of The Times but close.

In 1994 and 1995, Prince played new songs from the Gold Experience in concert, but refrained from playing his previous works. The Gold Experience was a radical departure from His Royal Badness stage.

The song Gold is incredible its got a special power in it, and every time I listen to it, it uplifts me, its great. And talking about rock songs (for your opinion about “endorphin machine”),
I think song “the cross” in Sign of the times” is quite rocky too, 😘😘

Awesome! I agree! Phenomenal, underrated and seldom discussed album. Thanks for doing this. This album had a huge influence on both the rock and R&B genres in the 90’s. It’s truly a staple. I Hate U is one of my top 10 favorites. One of the most powerful, heart wrenching guitar solos you’ll ever hear. You could tell he was really hurt. Lol. Thanks!

The Gold Experience has always been my favorite since I first bought it. It has some of my favorite songs by Prince in history and probably has one of the greatest track flows on a Prince album that leaves no skippable tracks and makes you always listen all the way through. Great review, I totally agree it deserves a 6/5!

At long last! An actual in depth review of MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE ALBUM!! I completely agree with you when you talk about joining some form of movement at the end of the album, I remember thinking just that when first finished listening to it. I picked up my copy about 15 years ago and instantly fell in love. It's such a shame this has been has been thrown into some sort of legal battle (dum if you ask me) but it at least its hardly had any press coverage to damage such a monumental album such as this. Thank you for clearing up what Billy Jack Bitch was all about!! My God thats frustrated me for years haha! And how you describe the album version of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World is spot on! That ending is exactly what that experience is, BEAUTIFUL!! I'm so pleased he put the version on the album. Listening to all these tracks on your video makes me what to dust off my vinyl copy and play it again. Did you ever manage to get hold of an edition of The Gold Experience on vinyl? I've got a promo copy thats see through "gold" (yellow) colour, along with the standard vinyl copy, I've heard their both quite hard to come by, so their defiantly two of my prize possessions :)
Vinyl copies might be a good thing to review for this week? I'm really pleased this is getting the attention it deserves. Screw Amazon reviews!! Thanks for the great content! Watching from the U.K.
    Keep it up bro!!

This is such a good album, it still sounds like it was recorded yesterday, hence I really hope they don't remaster any Prince album after 1994' the dynamics are insane on this album, the drum sound is just amazing, then when you think about the drums' you can't ignore the guitar & bass playing' his best album of the 90's for sure;) ps: much better punchier version of The Most Beautiful Girl in The World

I mentioned that when my mom died she passed down all of her prince things to me including albums. I was lucky enough to grow with his albums in my own time. I was 15 when I got to experience this album it was great for me at that time. The little notes my mom left to explain her experience made it even more beautiful. The artist was purple but prince was definitely gold. Thank you for this review!!!

This is one of the greatest albums from Prince. I love the title. The songs are cool to listen to, such as “P control” and “Shhh.” They both have great beats and ballads. This album to me, is golden. I would love to buy the album one day, as it looks impossible to find, either because it’s too pricey or almost or not available at all. And cool profile pic, btw. Very nicely made. This is an awesome review. Thanks for sharing!😄👍🏻

Best Prince album of the 90s, best closing song ever (yes, better than Purple Rain), one of the best opening songs and one of his best overall vocal performances. This was the first Prince album I actually bought when it first came out, I was 13 and for the prevoius two years I had been listening every single day to The Hits 1 & 2, Lovesexy, Diamonds and Pearls and the Love Symbol album. But The Gold Experience was the first that I had been really waiting for, and I remember me just being so excited and craving. So I guess it holds a special place in my heart as a Prince's friend. Thank you very much for the review, I totally enjoyed it!

Just wanted to say that I'm enjoying your thorough reviews of all things Prince-related! Like most Prince die-hard fans, I have every album the guy ever released, but unlike most Prince fans, I'm not stuck in the time-warp of the 80s. Yes, I love 1999, Purple Rain and SOTT, but...I tend to think that some of Prince's best songs musically came from the 90s. I love TGE...it's one of my all-time favorite Prince albums and it is SO under-rated...even by most Prince fans. "Gold" is one of the best rock anthem songs to ever be put on an album...period! I bought this album at midnight on September 26, 1995 when it was first released at a Tower Records outlet in Chicago and I listened to it so many times through the years that I literally wore out the CD to the point where it looked like someone had used it for a cup holder on the back. Having been out of print for years, I ended up finding a copy of it, brand new and unwrapped, for $85.00 on Amazon about 2 weeks before Prince actually died back in 2016. I can't even imagine what lingering copies of this album would sell for now that he's gone, but I'm so happy I have it again. Fabulous album and a great review by you, Sir! I look forward to more of your reviews!

The Gold Experience is in my top 10 Prince albums. Tracks like Endorphinmachine, Shhh, Now, Eye Hate You and Gold made it worth all the hoopla that followed the album with his whole changing his name and fighting with Warner brothers......ALSO I HATE how they removed The Most Beautiful Girl In The World when they rereleased the 2nd half of his catalogue.

I've been listening to Prince's 1995 - 2005 releases (sony) on my alexa. Listening while I've been doing a big decorating job in my house. I have to say, it's been so enjoyable to get access to this material after not really having the means to get vinyl/CDs. I've listed to The Gold Experience at least 3 times and I love it. I remember Gold charting in the UK and the songs stuck with me: the keyboard hooks, the epic guitar solos (and yes, I could hear the nod to Purple rain in some of the phrasing) and the general accessibility as a song.
No 'Most beautiful Girl in the World' !!! (no way Prince ripped of the song from those Italian song writers!!!)
I do really like the album and you did a fine job reviewing - then you would: you're Prince's Friend :-)
Today I listened to Come (I think, lot's of live tracks)...
    Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Art Full ! It's so nice talking to you again. I've been giving some though about what we talked about last time. You may not remember, but it was about " The Gold Experience" album.
I think you were absolutely right about Prince being really depressed during the 90s. He was so thin and pale when I look at pictures of him. I guess I just hated thinking of him feeling that way.
I think that makes this album an even more amazing achievement. It's so up beat and full of life despite the miserable state he was in dealing with his record company.
I'm still so jealous that you got to see" The Gold Tour" in person, LOL! Well I'm going to go listen to the review again. Bye 4 Now. 💜

Yes it was a Fab concert, especially Gold..Prince just glowed doing this live. My other fave was I love U in me. There were empty seats at Wembley as fans disappeared during this era.
Yes Prince did look gaunt and pasty 92 to 94 but he bounced back and looked great for the Gold album...he was probably relieved to be leaving WB...they had taken their toll on him for sure.

This era of Prince with his band NPG in the 1990s was truly inspired. The Gold Experience album is an example of Prince' prolific creativity and artistry during this era. I am always pulled to this album 'Gold Experience', and the album 'Chaos and Disorder', and not forgetting the amazing 'Come' album. I am blown away with the energy of Prince in the NPG era, so much creative energy, so funky, so Unique even Donatella Versace the Italian fashion couture designer loved Prince (For whom he recorded a special compilation remix of Gold Experience album). This era saw Prince produce so many incredible album recordings with his band NPG. As I already mentioned, the 'Chaos and Disorder' album, 'Gold Experience', 'Come', the 'Crystal Ball' album, 'Gold Nigga', 'Exodus', and 'New Power Soul', all produced during this era. Prince' performance output and production of music, including production of music for other artists was relentless. I just love this era, outstanding in all genres, Rock, Funk, Soul, Electronic Rave, Reggae Groove and Jazz. I recently purchased an outstanding 3 Disc album with 57 songs of Prince and the NPG reflecting this incredible era. The bootleg album 'The Dawn' is outstanding. Each disc plays for 77 minutes 7 seconds with 19 songs per disc. This album encapsulates 'The Gold Experience' in total perfection. 'The Dawn' bootleg is a must for any Prince fan who connects with the Gold Experience era. Prince allegedly planned to release the album 'The Dawn', however, songs from it became 4 individual albums, 'Gold Experience', 'Come', 'Chaos and Disorder', 'Crystal Ball'.. Thanks for this fabulous review.

Great review, thank you PF! I love The Gold Experience - it should have been as big as Diamonds & Pearls, but it was released way too late after The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Fans had heard a lot of the tracks on The Beautiful Experience video and in concert, so by the time the album came out it was more of a historical document. Another casualty of the Warners wrangle - it meant that what should have been one of Prince's biggest albums became obscure and hard to find. Absolutely love it though!

And, oddly, since I’m a fairly conservative older white guy, I think my favorite track is “319.” It’s the dry harmonies he’s using in the chorus that really get me. (In a way, they remind me of his use of harmony in “3121.” Maybe it’s a number thing...)

A key-click sound comes on and it brings us to "Gold".

Awesome album. I bought the CD when it first came out. And still have it. "Gold" is an underrated song by Prince. Disagree with you on "The most beautiful girl in the world" album version ending. The single version ending is better. Great video review.

" A really great and thorough review of this great CD"!!! You didn't disappoint. Am I the only one who thinks that with the song " P. Control" Prince incredibly combined two great sounds you don't often hear together. The lyrics are very adult oriented and the music could easily fit into a cartoon, lol! " I Love That"!!! 💜💖💜 I just wish they would release the video for "P. Control". 💜📼💜

Love you review! Now that Im older and taking more time to really study the songs in this album I love it more and more. The Most Beautiful caught my heart first but Dolphin is just magical in so many ways. Picking this mammal in particular was no accident since they are the most intelligent mammals in the sea ( and land in my opinion). Prince does a masterful job at this song enticing us to figure out what he is talking about. We know its more than the dolphin or his legal fight w/Warner, its also for us to be our own person and not allow anyone to control who we are. Blessings 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Prior to this album there was a Prince video game on CD. The "Computer Voice" and "Endorphin Machine" was on that game (maybe a few other songs too; I don't recall exactly). In the "Experience", you were supposed to move about the Paisley Park building looking for "Hidden" rooms. Like I said, I don't recall exactly the details.
It made me wonder if the actual Paisley Park building had any hidden rooms in it.

This was 1 of P's best in my opinion. I know it was widely reported that he didn't want to make another Purple Rain, but the song Gold gives me the same 'feel' as Purple Rain. Billy Jack Bitch, 319, and Endorpinmachine are 3 of favorite all time tracks. P Control and ssh go without saying. Anyway, can't wait for the rest of the week!

Great review for a great album from one of my favourite eras of Prince's career. One correction though, Days of Wild wasn't replaced by Shy. Both tracks were originally included on the album right up to the last minute. It was originally sequenced in between We March and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, with an additional NPG Operator segue beforehand. But then Prince removed it just before the album was released.

Great review! I go back-and-forth with this and Emancipation as my favorite Prince albums. These two are also his two best of the '90s. I loved your breakdown of the album and never paid close attention to us going into these different experiences (I will now!). My two absolute favorite songs off the album are "Endorphinemachine" and "Dolphin," but also love "P Control," "The Most Beautiful Girl...," "We March," and the killer trio to end the album. Also, "Shh" has one of the best drums intros to any song. More people need to access the Gold Experience.

Your score matches mine. Defin8 12/10 album. Superb album that easily makes it in2 my 🔝 5 of Prince's albums. Not 1 weak or mediocre track. Up until this album I was more of an MJ dude, but this album really turned the tide. Absolutely slays History, which (apart from Scream, 2Bad, Come Together & They Don't Care About Us) I thought was a sprawling, overlong mess.

    • @willthomas2310
      @willthomas2310 Před 6 lety +1

Michael Prescott, Jr. Over long mess? You know Gold Experience was a longer album then History, if you don't count the re-release songs? Personally i think both albums are great and underrated. It's kinda hard trying to compare the two albums, since they are different.

    • @thejoojooman6538
      @thejoojooman6538 Před 6 lety +1

@@willthomas2310 Yes, The Gold Experience is longer, but doesn't feel as long when listening 2 it. The Gold Experience also ends in stunning fashion (👁‍🗨 Hate U & Gold) whereas History (& by that I mean the new material disc only) whimpers out with Little Suzie & Smile. The flow of The Gold Experience is far superior & feels like a complete work. History is more like a compilation. My friends & I have been arguing about this 4 23 years. This 4 me was 1 of the 2 times that Prince had a superior album out when compared 2 MJ. The other............... The Rainbow Children.

Clearly remember pleading with Prince to release this album (telepathically, obviously). The version of Endorphin Machine is not the best one with all the added plinky plinky superfluous bits mixed in with the main guitar riff, and the version of Dolphin was equally over-produced, but yes it is for sure a classic.

Since I found your page, friend, this is the album review that I've been waiting for most of all. I'm not saying that I'm disappointed because you covered loads of great information including the whole Crystal Ball/Gold thing, but you could've mentioned that the tracks have a pieced together vibe. Brilliantly mixing the computer filler tracks was pure genius, though. I love the whole of this album despite all that. To the listener, it feels as if Prince aptly put it together and packaged it as "The Gold Experience" as a sort of "this is my greatest hits that you've not heard yet." My favorite tracks... Shhh, 319, and Shy - all seem like they don't belong here... but that being said I couldn't imagine "Strays Of The World" being on here either... So, who am I to say what goes where, right? Anyway... despite the disjointedness... one of his all time best albums no question about it.

  • @albertgonzalezdomingo9972

I loved your review, this album is definitely one of the stand-outs in all Prince's career. It was very hard back in 1995 not to be over judgemental about the song choices and the production as we were waiting so long for this release to happen and so much material was leaked. So I think Endorphinmachine could have kept the rock roughness it had on previous versions, and I wish the take of Billy Jack Bitch would have been the one I once heard where at the moment the horns start the rest of the music stops for half a minute or so, and from there it builds progressively into a funkier, more dynamic sound. When it comes to song choices, probably a double or triple album was the right format for music lovers as all the material there was to choose from was so outstanding. Glad prince chose Shy over Days of Wild though. But anyway, the album is incredibly good and your review really does justice to it!

Awesome. My fave tracks are Eye Hate U, Shhhh, Endorphins Machine and Billy Jack Bitch. I like the remix of The Most Beautiful Girl In the World better than the original version. He performed it on Soul Train in 1994. Speaking of the song he apparently wrote it for several different women and I heard his sister said he wrote it about their mom. The song is about inner beauty and had different women achieving their dreams in the video. Lol Prince sure had a way to keep us guessing who the real inspirations were for his songs. He said that fans will pretty much interpret it the way they want, something of that nature.

Before the Gold Experience was released there was a Prince CD-ROM game that had the song Interactive as an introduction of the game allow with a video. The day The Gold Experience was in stores I was there to purchase it but when I got home and heard Endorphinemachine it sounded so much like the song Interactive that I was not sure if it wasn't the same song. I had to go back to the CD-ROM and play the Prince game just to make sure that the two songs were different. You could do a whole show on Prince songs that sound the same.

We need a “Gold Experience Era” Box Set!
With all of the extra songs from the era, while many were released on Crystal Ball, but I’m sure there’s some that weren’t ever released, considering how productive of a period it was.
I’m pretty sure there’s at least a live concert filmed at Paisley Park, to go on a BluRay. Plus, the live awards show performances and official videos.
I’m also pretty sure there’s Prince Vocal versions of everything from the “Exodus” album.
