  • From really massive snakes that are ready to attack, to the strange creature that washed up on a beach, join us for 25 Animal Photos Explained
#10 … Coconut Crab -- Weighing in at over 9 pounds, this is the largest land-dwelling arthropod on earth. As you can tell from the photo, it’s also known as the robber crab. If you see one trying to raid your garbage can, leave that work to the professionals. Those pincers are strong enough to break open coconuts … hence the name.
#9 … Scary Emu … Looks like someone or something got this Emu’s dander up … The animal got so upset it actually grew a row of digital shark’s teeth in its mouth. The bird is real but the teeth are fake, of course. But this doctored photo went viral in 2014, claiming to illustrate some friendly Aussie wildlife.
#8 … Top Heavy -- Real horns for the Ankole-Watusi, a breed of cattle that’s native to Africa. Those huge horns can grow to 8 feet long from tip to tip, are used for defense … Just so long as the animal can keep its head upright, it should have no problem keeping attackers at bay.
#7 … Canine Keeping Cool -- No dog would be crazy enough to take a seat on top of a group water buffalos, right? But this pooch did exactly that in 2012, keeping its cool while the bigger animals were cooling off in the Ravi River in Lahore Pakistan.
#6 … Higher than the Average Bear -- It only looks like this bear is defying the laws of gravity. The animal really did manage to climb up a tree after wandering into a Boulder Colorado college campus. Wildlife officials brought the big guy down after tranquilizing it … and thoughtfully providing a cushion for it to crash onto.
#5 … In 2012, this diver got up close and personal with a 26-foot-long anaconda in Brazil. Most people would rather be digitally inserted into this image, but this guy did it the old-fashioned way. Luckily, the snake had just eaten and didn’t pay the diver much attention. Otherwise, it might have made a meal of him.
#4 … They’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat -- Yeah, this is a picture of an actual whale underneath an actual yacht taken off the Yucatan coast in Mexico in 2012. The whale shark measures 50 feet long, vs the yacht at 34-feet. Can you hear the “Jaws” theme right about now?
#3 … Sarcastic Fringehead -- You can likely tell from the picture that this is an aggressive animal. Extremely territorial, they they’re known to attack divers, and sometimes manage to tear through their wet suits. The face is so reminiscent of the Predator creature that this could’ve been been designed as a movie monster.
#2 … Tiny Shark -- Did someone shrink this shark? Or mess with the perspective? Nope, this is a Lantern Shark, and lives in deep waters, so not a lot is actually known about it. It gets its name from its ability to glow, called bioluminescence. While it is a shark, it won’t be as scary as, say, the Great White. The Lantern Shark is the world’s smallest shark, growing to less than 36 inches long.
#1 … Wolf Fish -- If you thought someone Photoshopped a picture of the Alien xenomorph with a shark, that’s understandable. But the Wolf Fish is for real, and those nasty looking teeth aren’t just for decoration. These creatures can weigh up to 90 pounds and measure 39 inches long. They’re found in the tropical waters of Suriname (surry-nam), and only come out at night to feed on fish and small invertebrates

That number 1 "Wolf fish" is also found in the northern Atlantic. We here in Norway call it "Steinbit". That would translate to "stone bite" as it has so strong jaw that is supposed to crush a stone. But they mostly use their jaw for crushing seashell or sea urchins. It also have a nasty reflex in its jaws; when you fish it and got it on board your boat (with out getting bit yourself), you simply put the jaws onto the railing of the boat and it will lock itself to the railing so you can cut of its head. The head will stay attached to the railing for a looong time :)
