- Porsche Cayman 987.2 carbon clean up. How much carbon is built up on the inlet valves after just 33000 miles. Once the Air Oil Separator, AOS valve starts to fail, the oil deposits will start to form on the back of the inlet valves, which can start to reduced the performance and in some cases cause misfires. One of the disadvantages of direct fuel injection.
To gain access to the intake valves you will need to remove the plenum chamber and inlet manifold. Once you have access to the valves and the port, I first start by gently scraping out as much as possible. After that I use some engine degreaser/brake cleaner to help remover the rest with a cloth. Warning - don't use to much degreaser as you don't want to wash this into the cylinder etc.

Just finished doing this. What a tough job. 90k miles, there was a lot of buildup. It was almost solid on valve stems. I didn't want to have too much solvent or junk pieces entering cylinders, so I used little amount of throttle body cleaner. Fumes are horrible btw, it's best to have some good ventilation of your work area, which I didn't have. So I used the pick and piece of rag wrapped around it and tooth brush and sometimes just piece of rag. Also I used vacuum and taped a drinking straw to the end of the hose, that gave me a little suction tool to suck out little pieces that were falling inside the shafts when trying to scrape the junk off the walls. On boxster it's very hard to get your body over the side of the car and have good reach to the intake. My roof was completely removed, even with that the access is not very comfortable. I ended up cleaning SOME of the junk but not all of it. Hope all the pain and time was not for nothing and I did more good then harm. Took me 3-4 evenings, few hours each time. Thanks for the video, it gave me confidence on what to do. After starting the car I had misfires for few seconds before the engine started running smooth. Did you have same? What was that?
Thank goodness I bought the 2.9 : )
I soaked my inlet ports with PU foam gun cleaning solution, which is basically acetone. That dissolved the residue and then I could absorb everything with a rag. Of course the valves have to be closed. The bigger flakes can be blown with compressed air or picked up like you did.
I’m at 145k miles definitely going to clean mine soon
That looked pretty clean to me. I just watched a ShopDAP video about a Mk7 GTI undergoing the same process and it was WAY worse in this engine.
I don't want to think about how much is on my valves after over 80K miles! May add cleaning them to the list of things to do when I add my OCC.
Hi does anyone know what the torque settings are for re-installing the plastic inlet manifolds?
First video I've seen on this for the Boxster - makes me desperately want to try it - however I've little appetite to wrench apart that frickin' metal inlet tube from my IPD Plenum setup! I have a new AOS on the way, but removed the current one last night with the manifold in there - doh! Anyway, besides the obvious peace of mind, was there any noticeable change in performing this? Did you have to do anything about valve position?
Can I ask how you ensured the engine was at TDC with the inlet valves closed? Thanks
How do we turn the engine over without access to the crank bolt
How tf is taht carbon in intake? I think its just dirt mixed with oil from crankcase. Also why not just remove that aos crap and ventilate crankcase into atmosphere or some can
As an aside - is the IPD any good on the 3.4 DFI?
i also have 987.2, i want to ask if i everyday use 7000rpm, will this car still have carbon ?
How many miles you did before cleaning?
Sheeezzzz……think I’ll just wait until Porsche updates their motors with port and direct fuel injection.😳🤪
Is it the same for the 981?
Catch can?
