  • An estimated 24 million people are expected to take cruises this year. One report showed more than a quarter of them are age 60 or older, and more than one-fifth are retired. For many of those passengers, the ships are like a second home, but for one woman, ocean liner Crystal Serenity is her only home. Peter Greenberg reports.

That's a goofy comment. I've got a relative who had a small business and who was a spendthrift and market investor. NO stupidity like real estate schemes, franchises or buying tons of whole life insurance. Just pure equity investing. Figure that he averaged about $250k a year of income, and he has "saved" his way to well into 8 figures. Plus, he's not running around pretending to be a tycoon.
$250K is a lot of money to make a given year, but he was sole income and paid taxes as an individual without many business expenses.
It is EASY to save your way in to prosperity in retirement. Both of my parents were teachers. They spent about half of what they made, and in retirement, they have a problem of too much money and not enough interest to spend it on anything.
Slow the money down and put it in something that appreciates, not this stupid youtube sham garbage about people being a wheeler dealer without having any specific skills. People like that are just targets.

I have heard of this, in fact, my great-aunt did this. She was receiving a lot of money every month from SS and her late husband's pension, I'm sure too much for Medicaid. She had been on cruises and loved them. She had trouble with arthritis and would have needed assisted living since she couldn't get around very well, grocery shop, cook, clean, that sort of thing. So, instead, she took advantage of senior citizen and frequent cruiser discounts and moved into a cruise ship. She lived in a handicap-accessible room and was quite happy for years. Compare this to nursing home costs though. A lot of these cruise lines are really reasonable when you take everything into account. Additionally, many essentially have "frequent flyers" clubs which add up to other discounts and free trips.
Me and my wife did a 14 or 15 day one transatlantic earlier this year, and it was only about $800 per ticket. Assume $1600-$2000 a month for all the food you can eat, everything taken care of? Beats a nursing home any day of the week, and honestly probably better for her health.

I just booked a suite for 4 people on harmony of the seas (worlds largest ship) for 5k for 4 PEOPLE - so they way over estimated. I'm saying at 800 a week she's at 42k a year let's say hi at 1000 a week shes at 52k a year. with good retirement plan she could easily be living off of dividends and interest. And think about it - that's ALL FOOD and entertainment for free - she LITERALLY needs to buy nothing - every week they give you soap and so on for free. this IS the way to go. plus let's not forget - loyalty incentives for cruising that much - I bet she get's huge discounts. this is so much cheaper than most retirement homes i bet.

Not really I used to work at a nursing home and DA and Cna the cost for the nursing home was over 135000 a year it's staggering. It's better to be there than in a nursing home your not respected or treated like a capable adult the threat of abuse is high and often unreported. The food is mediocre at best. And if you request something specific your considered a nuisance. I've seen other nurses and Cna individuals tell a capable adult to turn off her t.v. to go to sleep when she didn't comply they pulled the plug on it. Even for that high cost they share rooms have no privacy and the rooms are searched periodically things are often stolen. And the worst part is that nursing home was considered the best in south texas area.

We took a Panama Canal cruise in 2019 on the Grand Princess, a ship designed to make it through the narrow canal. It was a fabulous cruise. We met two retired women, each of whom was living full time aboard ship. They loved it. Unfortunately, three months after our cruise, Covid hit, and the Grand Princess was one of the notorious ships wherein Covid cases were so bad that passengers died on board and others were not able to get back home as anticipated. It was a disaster for a lot of people. I wondered then, as I often still do, how those two, elderly retiree ladies did during that dreadful time. I hope they both made it through okay. I also wondered where they stayed once they were able to get off the ship.
