      3 orders that can order anything is just too valuable. Not to mention his redeploy shenanigans. He'd have to be like 200+ points to ever not be worth taking. Creed as well is just so good for her points cost. You're only paying 55 for 2 regiment orders and a free use of fields of fire stratagem. The generic characters would either need substantial price drops or substantial buffs to be competitive. I lament the commissar functionally being a 30 point plasma pistol. He just isn't that good.

    I've noticed that Player Placed Terrain gives guard a much more favorable matchup on the board when compared to WTC and GW terrain. Overall PPT usually has less terrain overall and doesn't swiss cheese the firing lanes as much as the other styles, so that it allows the Leman Russes and Rogals to be much more valuable on the field. Before then, Guard had to rely on artillery cause it doesn't have enough dedicated melee and short range defenses to take on higher tier factions, and the points nerfs to artillery has hurt them a lot, but now everything is more equalized if underperforming when it comes to fighting the way GW wants them to. If the Munitorum Field Manual gives them an extra 100-150 points next pass Guard will be pretty nice.

Command squads are the best value and are what i include in my infantry heavy army for all the reasons above (even then sparingly - 2 + grand strategist gets you a lot for the points). Drop down to 45 points and you have the cadian castellan - his orders are short range, just 1 model (immaterial combat bonus) and sustained hits which imo has v low impact even on a big squad of battle line. Overall the buffs have to be superb to justify him instead of hopping up just a few points for more infantry bodies. In contrast Straken is 55, great combat, 2 orders as well as some unit buffs (albeit restrictive to close combat/ catachans). yeah but the things that are out of balance are horrendously out of balance. Codex units are massively over-costed and or underpowered (Deathstrike, Valkyrie, Wyvern, FOB, Aegis) FW units have eaten nerfs for no reason (Colossus), nerfs that strike them from even casual play (Earthshaker carriage), and I know for a fact they still havnt fixed the fact that the marauder bomber is missing an entire weapon from its datasheet.

    • @TheMarcosvolta
      @TheMarcosvolta Před 7 měsíci

      lol wut? not every unit has to be amazing, meta, or in line with every other unit. deathstrike has never been good because its deathstrike and its a one trick pony. why are you complaining about that? if you like the model, run the model. if youre just complaining, find something else to do with your time and energy. GW has nerfed aircraft across the board in 10th, following the nerfs of 9th. they dont want to create a flying meta again, so theyve been relegated to casual play and meme lists for the most part. i mean just look at flight rules in general, fucking DUH dude. it just seems to me that youre not paying attention and are looking for something to cry about. FOB is fine, any buff could make it over powered, but buffing it wont sell models as everyone has a few already from the combat patrols. Aegis doesnt need to meet any specific standards that you have arbitrarily determined and have not communicated. Your opinions were formed in a vacuum with a knowledge base of zero, it seems. FW, same story as flight. GW is shifting their business model away from finecast, but theyre still holding on a bit for now. havent you heard of Warhammer Legends? do you lack the simple observational awareness to see what GW is doing? or do you not pay attention and then just whine ignorantly into the abyss because it makes you feel something other than existential dread? come on dude, at least try engaging with reality a bit before speaking up about shit you clearly dont understand. you're just a self entitled dude who wants things a specific way, it sounds like, but i really doubt you care about any of those units you mentioned because no fucking list would run any combo of them together. like wtf dude? every unit must meet your specific critieria for strength? who died and made you arbiter of 40k balance? its a goddamn good thing GW ignores their playerbase and uses their own methods and experience to determine rule balance. Why the hell would earth shaker carriage get struck from casual play? thats stupid, thats not how casual play works. i'm running an ES carriage because i like it and i think its fucking cool. it fills a nice spot in my army and the increased point cost was warranted as it became more in line with the points costs of other artillery available. as for the bomber, they arent required to bring every weapon from previous editions. they simplified things and removed a lot of stuff intentionally, but here you are talking like, "i know for a fact they still havent fixed." dude, theres nothing to fix, how are you so certain about shit you clearly dont understand??? it was intentional, you DONT KNOW FOR A FACT, youre just out here ignorantly assuming shit and proclaiming your self entitlement without even making any sort of statement as to how you think anyone could "fix" what you see as some sort of terrible crisis. its a fucking game. you have no say in balance. you dont even understand game balance. you're just here to cry. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

    Guard are pretty ok at the moment. You can bring a wide variety of lists as balanced bruiser strategies that deal damage, soak damage and push onto objectives. They punish some skew lists. What they lack are easy cheese that can prevent the opponent interacting before the game is decided. (Closest guard get to that is slapping a big slow expensive squad with extra slow from earthshaker debuff)
    - Exterminators are good
    - Earthshakers are good
    - Straken is good
    - Expensive reinforcement targets are good
    - There are a few cheeky forgeworld units that are op that somehow arent showing up in "meta" lists. Probably due to availability or being less known about.
    - Orders are limited and give your opponents easy assassinate vp if you rely on lots of small order count characters.
    - Born soldiers basically doesn't exist and may as well just be printed on mortars etc rather than being an army rule.
    Some units are hilariously bad, like the Aegis, but mostly the index internally is decently balanced among the plastic kits.
    If you bring guard to a tournament, you will have fun games that come down to dice and good decision making against balanced meta lists. You arent going to win before the deployment roll in any game, so going undefeated will be a slog. Guard are fine imo.

      Yeah, I think vehicle lists are just overall easier to buy and paint(faster too) compared to massed infantry. Once the codex is out, detachment rules might make people want to focus more on Infantry for some lists.

    Guard aren’t particularly weak per say, they are just an deceptively high skill army with widespread variance that you have to account for
    For starters born soldiers is incredibly meh outside of the occasional artillery or tank boost… fire and maneuver is mandatory on modern boards
    The current stratagems are also super meh with fields of fire being the only real standout since infantry is not a strong mainstay (despite reinforcements being quite good)with the widespread blast in the current meta
    Aaaand the enhancements are pure rhinox dung except for grand strategists giving a tank commander a boost
    At the moment it really feels like the best list has been solved which is kinda boring since the army has such a wide range of units that could create some of the most varied army compositions in the game… but currently you will be best suited running Solar with his command retinue, Ghosts, maybe Creed, 2-3 catachan in chimeras, some bullgryn, various armored heavy firepower of your choice, and a supplement of artillery and sentinels
    You can theory craft all you’d like but a variation of that list is the only thing to secure major victories for his Imperial Guard this edition

    3 TC and lord solar in 1 list is trash idc how well it did in that 1 tournament. That's completely unoptimized. Waste of 60 points, just take a regular demolisher, Exterminator, battlecannon etc and order them with Lord solar. At most 1 TC with grand Strategist. Shooting bc you die is not a good ability.

    • @dominicl5862
      @dominicl5862 Před 7 měsíci +1

      whiteroom theorycraft. The Solar can order the TCs and the TCs can support other tanks. And then the TC's get extra shots on death. There is value there theoretically, and literal game data.

    • @DavidPurcell-hl3mz
      @DavidPurcell-hl3mz Před 7 měsíci +4

      It gave me 6 orders (3 from lord solar, 1 from each tank commander) and 6 order targets (3 tank commanders, basilisk, manticore, executioner). Occasionally I'd have to pull an order off of a tank commander to bump the movement or WS of the bullgryn or a Chimera. Shooting because you die is SUCH a good ability. Allows you to push out onto a risky angle, blast away at a target of close to but not equal value (ex. a forgefiend, hammerhead, or trukk) and then if you die on the crack back you can regain any missing point value by shooting it again. The only thing to watch out for is dying while in melee during the fight phase, but not getting your tanks touched should be a skill most guard players already have. Also even if you do value orders and shoot on death at 0 its not a waste of 60 points its a "waste" of 15, tank commanders cost 5 more than demolisher russes.

      Thanks for sharing the thinking behind the list. I'll admit I really wasn't too sure how it was meant to play! I absolutely loved vengeful salute last edition, could be absolutely game changing on russes playing aggressively with good lines of fire.

    • @Swordsmansmith87
      @Swordsmansmith87 Před 7 měsíci

      @auspextactics terrain dependent possibly. The thing with the tank commander is he only gets vengeful salute and not the gun variants other ability. So he can't shoot blast into combat with a demolisher like that variant can.
