I usually am a bit reluctant to use a normal gimbal on my mirrorless because there are so many steps to balance, and so many things to bring and not forget when you are outside, but with this video I have seen what it really means a complex gimbal setup. Wow. It has been very interesting, and makes me think that really it is better to use a smaller camera on a gimbal than to go with a cinema camera and all the weight and complications. Thanks for your thoroughness and the analysis from actual experience

Hi HP. I did spend a day testing with the reduced arm. It doesn't really solve the clearance issue. Its primary purpose is just to get the motor out of the way of the screen; albeit, it does also replicate the 3S, so going into underslung is quick and easy in short mode. I decided to let users just play with that on their own and discover what the low motor mode can and can't do. Otherwise the video would have been horrifically even longer.

Great video, I am building a heavy rig on paper but before I buy I am wondering how to pull focus & not break my back. I wanted to use RS2 with dual handles but don’t think it can handle the weight. Crane s3 might be my only option as a solo operator

Hi CI. I hear what you're saying, but I think that's far too esoteric. Every situation is so different that you often just have to problem solve your own unique situation. That said, bike tubes fix a lot of things... haha.

I Just subscribed, and Liked this video it was Long and fantastic, it's worth my time, it even solved my Problem and Answered my question, I have Crane 3s Pro pack, but was scared to mount it on a Redking Flycam Gimbal, cause almost everyone on CZcams doing it, were using a smaller Gimbal, I was worried that it wouldn't Hold, but you showed me your friend that had one on his Glidecam, my question is this: what or where can I get the screw/Bolt that will hold my Crane 3s to the Glidecam strong enough with all the payload on the Crane 3s.

Hi Godwin - Thanks for the great comment. Fundamentally you just need to ensure you are using a 3/8 16 thread. That should suffice to hold the rig together. One thing that I also didn't mention in a video but was something that recently came up in a job is to see about moving cine-camera batteries (v-mount or gold mount) to a body-worn pocket, back pack, or similar. I had an Alexa Mini mounted on the Crane 3S, and while it "worked" - it caused the motors to quit quite often. The package weight was about 10 lbs - so still 4 lbs under the max capacity, but the gimbal didn't like the rig at all. So, to just re-affirm my over-arching concept from the video; just because the company says the gimbal can handle the weight, doesn't mean it will. Or at least, reliably. So when building bigger rigs, I recommend moving the battery power off the camera if you can. Make the camera package size as compact as you can. Hope that helps!

THIS is crazy! I own the S1H and the EVA1 as well - and I have been thinking about the C3s Pro Kit for months. Now that I'm serious about it - you have this video out. THANK YOU! I saw on their site that you can pull focus via their application and I wonder what you think about the reliability and latency of their wireless transmission to the app as well as the actual focus pulling function in the application with the sliders. I prefer my DJI Focus over that but nice to have in a pinch or as a back up. Any way to power the DJI Focus with the C3s? I saw the added battery with a D-tap - but will that limit my movement i think. I just ordered it so I'll do some testing. Also curious about the undersling mode. I saw there was a jitter issue months ago. Is that pretty much gone now?
Hi Bradley! Thanks for the great comment. I can't speak to the jitter issue specifically. I mean, i've experienced that on every gimbal I've ever used. Typically it happens when it's within its weight range but can't be balanced well for whatever reason. I can't speak to operating DJI focus with the Zhiyun products. I never tried it. Maybe it works, or maybe they have some type of digital block on it to prevent you from doing that. I also can't imagine pulling focus with an app is very accurate - but IDK, I never tried. Likely works ok with wide lenses at f4 and up - but I wouldn't trust it on a 35mm and longer. Seems problematic. Finally I didn't notice any latency issues at all. Not to say there aren't any, but I just haven't noticed it. Best of luck with the new rig!
Great video! I've actually been thinking of doing the same thing with a monopod I have lying around! Have you noticed any slippage from the bike tire/gaff tape? I've been trying to find a solution to mount the Steadimate-S to the smaller monopod without slipping under the weight of my rig.

How can I use the Nucleus on that Gimble?
I purchased the Steadcam Steadimate-S and it is not compatible with the newer Crane 2s, the shims are not large enough to fit around the collar of the gimbal, it’s a shame because I’ll be shipping it back.

I believe it weighs somewhere around 4 kilograms.
Would you suggest and believe that I'd be able to use this setup on Crane 2s? One of the videos I saw of Crane 2s shows that you can use the arm in diagonal orientation so the motor does not block screen.
Great Video. Question. I just got the Crane 3s. Is yours silent? cause mine makes a subtle noise... sounds almost like an old mechanical hard drive loading. It's inside towards the pan motor. Also, is it normal to have very fine subtle vibrations? Like, when I put my hand on the roll arm, I can feel a slight hum kind of vibration in my fingertips.
mmmm...it'll maybe make a bit of sound but nothing that I ever really noticed. It shouldn't give you micro tremors. If it's doing that, your motor power should probably be adjusted. Though even with a perfect set up, sometimes you'll still get an odd tremor here or there but it's never consistent and usually if it's held in one specific way and the gimbal is a bit overloaded. That's just my experience, however.

Hi DC. The focus motors are all plugged into the USB ports on the gimbals.

I'm just using a cell phone holder and an articulating arm for the follow focus unit. Easy peasy.

If it has a 1/4 20 or 3/8 16 insert on the bottom then yes it will work.

Hi Roger. All equipment used is linked in the comment section. The collar is part of the Stedicam rig. Weights are SmallRig.
i want to see you use the mimic option on a jib crane or dolly because now people dont have to buy motorized jib cranes or dollys to rotate the camera
I think it would work well in an indie context, but for large budget commercials or films, going with remote heads or even just a Ronin R2 with the Master Wheels is still the way to go. Beyond payload, there is also response times, motor strength, etc. But, short answer - yes, for indie it's a great tool!
7 months on, what are your thoughts on this set up, has it been working reliably well with heavier payloads? Thinking of building one out
Hi Aristo, if you have the 30lb arm/vest it all works great. But as I said in the video, it's not something you're going to master right away. It might take you a year to get it working in a consistent way. There are a lot of variables to control.

Great video! My wife and I are paranormal investigators. I have a Sony AX100 and I'm trying to determine which Gimbal is best suitable for my camera. I would also be adding ir lights and the transmitter to our lava mics. Which Gimbal would you recommend for this type of setup? Do you think I'd need to add anything extra to support the accessories?

Remote controlling the 3s with an iPhone on sticks/head - is there a way to do a 360 barrel roll, and how?
I think there is a setting the controls roll. It ought assign it to pan axis. Can’t quite remember. Maybe someone else knows or it would just be trial and error.
The attachment of entire Gimbal with camera and the monopod is just on a screw. Is it safe that way? I'm thinking of building it but that 1 screw attachment is sacry part. Please help.
yes, the 3/8 16 isn't really loaded in any severe way. I see no issues with it.

Great video. On the issue of weight management I use the SmallRing Gimbal ring, the Easyrig Easy Tilt and the Easyrig Minimax. Both the Crane 2S and Crane 3S work with this set-up. The camera weight however creates an issue in using the Crane 3S as the Minimax has a weight limit of 15.4 lbs. Using the Sony A7SIII cameras is great on either gimbal.
My issue is getting my Blackmagic 6K cameras to work. I can get them to balance all day long but once I turn on the gimbal it all goes bad. I am actually at a loss as to how to proceed next.
Hi JA. That is a bit strange, but not surprising. Based on my experience I would try the following: 1. Adjust motor strength. 2. Take the camera off the gimbal and try to isolate where the balance point is. Usually I do this but just resting it on my finger for a half second. If the balance point indicates that one side of the camera is way lighter than the other, you might want to find a way to compensate for that with counter weights. Once the gimbal thinks it's one evenly weighted camera, I suspect it will start to work better. That's my best guess though.
Re: the steadicam I see you have the Steadimate 15, don't you think that rig is way heavier than 15 lbs?

your Steadimate - crane 3s rig looks impressive, however the footage looks incredibly shaky ( at 34:08 for example ). Did you manage to find a solution? Could it be because you are overloading the A-15 arm and holding weight with your hands? Also it appears sometimes you operate with the camera on the wrong side, steadicam arm folded in an unorthodox way :-D ( 34:08 ) - great rigging though!
Hi Michele. Yes all of the above. Also, in many ways adding a gimbal to a steadicam rig is worse because you’re now adding at other axis factors. All this to say, the rig needs a lot of refinement and practice. This was simply a fast set up for a visual example. And yes, it was all very overloaded.

I own the 2s and I was sad that you only used the 2s to the Max upto "Equipment Block" but you did not truly "Maxed Out" the Gimbal Set "By The Max Weight" in consideration of "Not Blocking" the Gimbal...

Thanks Ryno! Oh man, it's really a hodge podge of things. Mostly just little nuts/bolts/etc for various camera rigs. A good idea is to start with a small set of Small Rig parts (1/4 20, 3/8 16). Add adaptors, couplers, velcro, sash, bongo ties, batteries (AA & AAA), hex bolts, hex wrenches, other multi tools/swiss army, etc. The rest is really up to you and what you think you'd need for your personal work. ✌🏻
