    You know when you look back and all the cars Ford Motor Company built they were very innovative this car is absolutely beautiful and is a perfect example of what I'm saying

    Nice ride. Ford is the only company that did the retractable hardtop thing, it’s still amazing.
    A/C and FE engine clinch the functional value, that’s quite the Ford.

    Hindsight is great. Can only imagine how much money Ford would have made naming the Edsel lineup Galaxie instead, with T-Bird styling cues and innovative options like the skyliner.

      @jamesbosworth4191 Před 4 měsíci

      Never thought of that, but you might be right! The public LOVED the Galaxie, so, if it was the Edsel instead of the Ford that had the Thunderbird-like roofline, Edsel might have become a sales winner, and we might today still be able to buy a new Edsel!

    The Ford Motor Company had no peer in automatove design and styling ...at least at the time when American cars were distinctively American. Chrysler was next .....then G.M.
    The fifties engineering of the Sunliner is extraordinary.

    I had a '59 Skyliner Retract like this one in 1980 I paid $1500 for it, very innovative engineering
    for the 1950's.

      Innovative period, but the concept originated with the Peugeot in the mid 30s.

  • @larryhawkins3294
    @larryhawkins3294 Před 4 lety +1

    The Skyliner was not cheap back in the day in 1959. The base price of the Skyliner Retractable with the standard 292 V8 was $3348. When fully loaded with fender skirts, town & country radio, wire styled wheel covers, Cruisomatic, power steering, brakes, windows 4 way bench seat, tinted glass. 352 V8 and air conditioning This car listed at about $5000.00 which was near luxury money back in '59.

    for the first 3 months of production these retractables were called Fairlanes but when Ford put the Thunderbird style roof on the Fairlane they were all called Galaxie's and had the Galaxie name badge replace the Fairlane badge. thus the Galaxie as a car was born.

    • @montymatilda
      @montymatilda Před 3 lety

      Yup and the Fairlane 500 remained on the trunk lid and dash, making them Fairlane 500-Galaxie-Skyliners. Of course you still had the Fairlane 500 with the different roof and a Fairlane model to go with the Custom 300. Ford got messy trying to catch up with the '58 Impala from Chevrolet. A Galaxie 500 didn't appear until 1962.

    • @jamesbosworth4191
      @jamesbosworth4191 Před 4 měsíci

      @@montymatilda That is technically true, but Ford never referred to the 59 Galaxie as a type of Fairlane, 500 or otherwise, just GALAXIE.

    Why is there a Level Air emblem on the rear? I saw no air compressor, or anything else to show it had Level Air in the past. Looks to need a little detailing under the hood... master cylinder, brake booster and generator look beat up, otherwise a super nice car. Love the colors! Looks like Classic Red Soda paint on the body.

    Those cars are spectacular 57 58 59 even the 1949 Fords are just amazing just wish there was fuel injection disc brakes and a better coolant system starting with the radiators in those years but if you buy one you can certainly replace them with the updated

    • @jamesbosworth4191
      @jamesbosworth4191 Před 4 měsíci

      You are supposed to keep classic cars STOCK. You can improve the cooling by having the radiator recored with a thicker core. Won't change the looks at all, and on many cars, you can replace the brakes with station wagon or even 1/2 ton pickup brakes. On Fords, you can substitute Lincoln brakes for the stock Ford units. To most people, the car will still look 100% stock, but will have better stopping power, (bigger brakes), and better fade resistance. That's the way we used to improve braking in Hot Rods - bigger brakes. There was no such thing a disks back then.

    Yeah, I test drove one of these, and the way it handled made me think: "I'm sure glad they don't make cars like they used to" But it sure does look great.

    • @jamesbosworth4191
      @jamesbosworth4191 Před 4 měsíci

      In a regular passenger car, COMFORT is more important than handling. Great handling is for SPORTY and SPORTS cars, not cruisers. This car is a CRUISER, not a sports car.

    As much as I love the '64 XL interior, it didn't belong here. The '59 top-line interior was the prettiest they made, IMO. Very well done. They ruined this one. The 2 tone dash doesn't work either. It may have looked better in all red but still...Someone bought it though. The Skyliner was an amazing feat of engineering.

    the 57 58 59 skyliners were a gimmick by ford. the sunliners are rarer and much more practical although they were all great looking cars. trunk space in the skyliners was nearly nonexcistent. and if your gonna have one keep the original engine.

    • @danmccarthy4700
      @danmccarthy4700 Před 2 lety

      Trunk space in this is actually really good for a retractable hardtop. There's a decent sized luggage area in the center of the trunk that the top fits around.
