  • Hello! In this video we're going to be looking at an AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus. It was advertised on eBay as faulty and having "No Power".
    This turned out to be a bit of an unusual repair, and I spent quite a considerable amount of time and research on it, so I hope you enjoy :)

    A great fix! Your early videos elude to your programming interests, so they came in extremely handy here 😊 it does look as if a firmware update went wrong or something corrupted the data and wiped everything. A great plus with your son having a similar model to get some of the info from too. A great job at getting the info from the files bit by bit, this must have took some hours to fully repair, I used to use PuTTY in the late 90's - 2000's, a great little tool for diagnosing networking errors. Most would have stopped when they found out that the firmware was toast. Loved the in - depth microscope and oscilloscope work, excellent 👏 It gives me more confidence to do more myself now, I have been repairing milwaukee / bosch tools and 2 x 110vac Trend T35 AL, M class dust extraction units in the last few weeks, so thank you for that. I'm kinda not surprised by a "self-destructing" IC these days, especially with something like this that could be considered usable so many times before things get wiped and a new one needing to be bought (gotta love e-waste). But as you also said that it could've been rendered faulty by the end-user either thinking that an update was done or was in too much of a rush and pulled the plug before the firmware update was finished. At least it can live again and be useful as a spare/backup.

    Amazing skills in fixing that. So not only can you repair circuit boards your able to diagnose a firmware problem, then source the correct firmware and program it.

    Quick one for you if you're ever doing stuff like this, plugging in and out usb over and over. I made a little box with a male and female usb a and a 4 pole switch. Just handy little thing to have around and cost me a fiver to make. Save wear on the precious usb port.

    Astounding and very interesting - thanks! The PC will only pick up the device when the right-hand switch is to the left or the right. The middle position is for recording direct to the SD card.
    I'm on my second one of these - the first didn't give me any video signal via HDMI, so I returned it for replacement. Turns out that the HDMI lead was faulty, not the device! I should have done as you did and try a different one.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks 👍yes for the PC to detect it normally the switch has to be to the left as you say. However putting it into bootloader mode (hold top button down while plugging into USB) it doesn't make any difference as this is before the switch state is even read 🙂

    Mad respect for staying at that... as soon as i saw the firmware was corrupt it would have been binned.. Shame there wasnt an easier way to extract the firmware and flash it again. Reverse engineering at its best :)

    Fascinating and.unusual. I’m interested to know what path you followed which gave you the knowledge to fix this sort of device. I can see the basic logic of your approach - power supplies, fuses , components but at a loss understanding architecture and firmware. Well done ! A credit to your knowledge and persistence :-)

      Thanks 👍probably around 3 days. 1 day was the electronics testing, then ordered an adapter which took a couple weeks to arrive. Then a couple of days taking the chip off, putting it back on and searching the internet and messing about with software. Oh and then about 2 full days of editing it all as there was captures from 2 different pcs, and a couple of different cameras and the microscope.
