- A walk from Theydon Bois Station through Epping Forest, over the M25 then down to Ninefields Estate. We look at Waltham Abbey and the grave of King Harold before walking along the River Lea Navigation to Cheshunt Station with a shot of the Chesunt Level Crossing.

Not a specific comment on this video, more a thanks for all of your videos which have been like a warm arm around my shoulders over the last two weeks. I'm just coming out of the other side of an unpleasant bout of covid which, in addition to the lock down, has robbed me of time in my beloved Epping forest and surrounding area. I actually feel that I have been able to experience the restorative powers of the forest through your videos and felt the warmth of places that I know well and intrigue for those new to me. I'm now really looking forward to be able to get out into nature again - when allowed - with my trusty camera and walking boots with the atmospheric music from your videos twinkling in my ears. So, thanks again. I look forward to binge watching your CZcams site content and anything new that you produce.
My one final comment - brush up on your fungi identification! 😉

The romance of a Neolithic trackway! Bits and pieces keep appearing in the countryside. England’s ancient history never fails to charm me. So many delightful gems of history on your walks in this, to me, old familiar landscape. I had no idea that King Harold was buried at Waltham Abbey, or bits of him. Edith Swanneck......the name says it all. Her devotion to Harold and her beauty. Thanks again John Rogers for these delightful walks.

Walsingham is in north Norfolk. Given that Richard III has an impressive final resting place in Leicester, should King Harold's remains be exhumed and offered a suitable prominence at Waltham Abbey? Has any attempt been made to find his bones or has nature taken them? Another interesting walk, John.
Off topic, but I remember you seeing a lady picking pine cones and putting them in the oven to dry as decoration. I tried it today and it works! The kitchen smells nice, too.
Thanks for that Borderlands, I've been meaning to walk to Norfolk for a while - I wonder if the pilgrim path meets the Icknield Way at any point.
I do quite like Harold's understated grave, I believe a number of places claim to have his bones and I wonder if Waltham would be reluctant to put its claim to the test although I'd say it's a very good candidate and where he'd want to have been buried.
I must try baking the pine cones - love the idea of filling the house with that smell of the woods

John have you heard the story of a miraculous stone cross dug out of Ham hill near Montacute Somerset . Loaded on a six oxen cart that was destined for Westminster Abbey and missed its destination and ended up at Waltham Abbey..? And that’s why the Abbey was built there.?
("The Discovery of our Holy Cross") or "Waltham Chronicle", relates that, in about 1016, the blacksmith at another estate belonging to Tovi, at Montacute near Glastonbury, found a large black flint (or marble) crucifix buried at the top of a hill, after a dream. Tovi had the cross loaded onto an ox-cart, but the oxen would only go in one direction and continued every day until they reached Waltham, a journey of some 150 miles. This Holy Rood or Cross was installed at the church and soon became the subject of pilgrimage. Tovi is said to have rebuilt the church, but modern evidence suggests that he probably retained the 8th-century fabric of the building.
Another great video John, that trackway was once a road that you could use to cut from the Epping New Road to the Upshire road, I think they closed it to traffic in the early 90's

This summer I did this walk (setting out from Epping). Those reluctant footpaths make it really somewhat unwelcoming while approaching Waltham Abbey.
As you, I have often thought how different it would have been if Harold had waited and revived himself and his men before going on to Hastings, but it would seem 'William the Bastard'. was also aware of this and committed terrible tortures such as flaying on the peoples of Hastings in the days before the battle, knowing full-well that Harold loved his people and would not be able to ignore their plight.
So it would seem the everyday day term of 'bastard' became to be used for someone who had no mercy or care for other people, a nasty piece of work was William.
The neolithic trackway is a real find. Probably I walked at least part of it some time ago not knowing.

The reason there are iron bars on some of the footpaths, is to stop motor bikes and cyclist from ruining the paths, nothing idyllic about Waltham Abbey, its a tip. But i liked your vid.
