  • Police have seized thousands of images from hidden cameras at Airbnb rentals - including people’s most intimate moments - across North America. A CNN investigation has found Airbnb not only fails to protect its guests from being illegally filmed, it also works to keep these cases quiet. The company told CNN instances of hidden cameras are “exceptionally rare.” In a deposition reviewed by CNN, an Airbnb official said the company had documented 35,000 customer support tickets about “security cameras” or “recording devices” over the past decade. Senior investigative correspondent Kyung Lah has the full report for CNN.

      The Airbnb model is insane both from a renter and owner prospective especially if not a property dedicated for Airbnb.
      Anyone using an Airbnb needs to go into it assuming there are cameras everywhere, because most likely there are.
      Anyone renting out a property needs to assume a repeat renter has planted cameras. Hotels are slightly better but I check them for cameras, bring Clorox wipes, Lysol and my own sheets and pillow cases if possible.

    I have never understood why anyone would ever trust the Airbnb model as a customer or as a provider. Yes there are going to be hidden cameras, yes there are going to be people going through your stuff, yes they are filming porn movies in your house.
    My wife’s friend would rent out her entire house for the week when her kids were at their father’s including her teenage daughter and son’s room. I said to her “You know they are going through your kids underwear and personal stuff and having sex in your kid’s beds”. She was surprised by this and responded “No they aren’t”. Shocking how naive people can be.

    BAN AirBnBs. Nuff said.

    • @PK1982_
      @PK1982_ Před měsícem

      You can't ban them but consumers can just choose better options. I have never really understood the Airbnb phenomenon and why so many people are attracted to the prospect in staying in another person's home temporarily. It's like living inside someone else's clothes and driving their car. Why subject yourself to something like this? Just find a hotel and stay away from these types of accommodations.

    • @johncrump328
      @johncrump328 Před měsícem

      @@PK1982_Why? AirBnBs & VRBOs, etc. are able to provide accommodations in locations where hotels and motels are not available and/or increase overnight lodging capacity in areas where existing hotel/motel capacity is full. Cost can vary from less than, same, or greater then other options. Also, they can offer away to save money by use of the kitchen.
      I scan for illicit devices with my eyes and my phone when I first arrive and periodically through the stay. Similar but less so for bonafide hotels/motels.

    • @johncrump328
      @johncrump328 Před měsícem

      Rather than using government to ban them-if that is what you mean-increase public awareness of the concern for privacy then let the market take care of the problem. Maybe there are people who don’t care about being surreptitiously recorded and find value in whatever else the Airbnb or vrbo offer.
      Because of this video, I will definitely redouble how I check for such devices where I stay- even some ordinary bathrooms, too.

When they were packing up, her partner assumed it was hers because it was plugged in next to the bed and grabbed it, thinking he was doing her a favor and packing it so she wouldn’t leave it behind. Very normal thing to do. Had it actually been a charger, she could’ve just sent the guy $5-10 and moved on.

      It was an honest mistake. People mistakenly pack things that do not belong to them in hotel room. We sometimes leave behind things that do belong to us as well, this acutally happened to me. In this case according to the full video as somebody pointed out, the charger was on her side of the bed and her boyfriend packed it thinking it was hers.

      If you find the full video, she wasn’t being a criminal. It was plugged in next to the bed they were sleeping in, so her partner packed it because he assumed it was hers. Super easy mistake and if it had actually been a charger, any AirBnb host would’ve just moved on or requested to be paid back for it. People accidentally take or leave things at rentals all the time, it comes with the territory. You just charge them for it or request it back if it’s not easily replaceable. Calling her a criminal for taking a charger is wild 😂
