Little did his fellow students know, that a Medal of Honor recipient was standing in front of them. Notice how he didn’t mention up front he literally jumped on grenade to save a life. THATS why he’s a Medal of Honor recipient, because he never considered doing that anything other than what he was supposed to do. And so humble. He represents the best of us, what we all could be!

I am absolutely astounded that these young men could not get off their privileged asses to STAND and applaud this soldier who suffered more than they ever will in their lives, and was about to receive the MOH. I'm embarrassed for the entire University; I am ashamed of them as they all seemed so cavalier afterwards. I am ashamed of the coach who should have been the FIRST one to stand so that his group of lazy ass "children" would have followed suit. He stood, only to walk up to the front of the room and offering such as shallow complement to this man for speaking. Not one of these young men ("Team" - hardly), not one of them - as they passed by this Hero and shook his hand, paused to say some personal words of gratitude, perhaps ask permission to embrace him, or paused long enough to let their eyes say what was in their hearts. It's because it was not in their hearts. And then the coach gets up and tells this young hero how brave he was to stand up and speak !!! To stand up and speak! The coach goes on about 'Brave enough to speak' but nothing else about this remarkable young man's battlefield bravery, his concern for his soldier teammates, his remarkable stamina.… Un E-ffing believable. This Coach never even mentioned that he was about to receive the MOH or that this young man threw himself on a grenade to protect his teammates. To say that this coach should be ashamed hardly says it all. He's old enough and mature enough to say something to his "team" about the extraordinary character, the unfathomable suffering and subsequent determination that this young soldier went through so that these young cavalier ass holes can live free. So that they can pursue an education, party themselves into a drunken state, Chase woman, and live a life in the ivory tower, a life of sometimes carefree cheap thrills, and a life of luxury that many young people in this country never experience. If I were the president of this university I would immediately take down this post which casts a dark shadow far beyond the soccer team; a shadow that reflects so so so terribly on the University. Truly, as these guys walked by and casually shook this hero's hands it was obvious it was only because they were told to. The line had the classic flavor of a post contest line "Good game" ritual. There was no spontaneous approach by any of these very lucky thoughtless lazy BOYS to express any real gratitude. most seemed attentive and a bit curious about private carpenters recovery with their questions, which is the best I can say. Not one of them seemed humbled including the coach. Even If their defense is that this video does not show the entire event, no exclamation is adequate for the unemotional, mechanical line of young men briefly passing by and giving a sterile handshake to this hero. One guy even patted him on the shoulder. Wow. Shame shame shame on all of you. The coach, the University, and the president of the University for not taking down this video post - in fact never even posting it. It turns my stomach, and if it doesn't turn years you better watch again. I'm betting to this day, after Cpl. Kyle Carpenter stood before the incredibly small fraternity of still living Medal Of Honor winners - and as the president draped the Nations most Prestigious award for Valor around this young soldiers still Healing body --- That Some of these young men say to anybody willing to listen… "Oh yeah, I know him"

I also agree, that it's soldiers like this young men, who make sure that this bunch of ungrateful americans are so priviliged compared to Afghan people, who don't even have fresh water. And this is the tragedy. If it wasn't for these young soldiers, that help rob thirdworld countries, the world might be a better place. Now you had an eye on the kids who listened to him, but did you also listen to what he said? They are making weapons out of whatever is available to them, just to defend their country. Yes they are poor as hell, but with the little that they have they fight till the end. Because they don't come from the USA. They live in the dirt. With nothing but what they can take from the land. So in my view the real heros don't get a metal of honor. They get nothing at all. And they die by the millions, just like they did in Vietnam. Unrecognized.

"I started getting shot at by a sniper, but I wasn't too worried"......That sentence alone makes me realize what a chickensh*t I am.....as I would be considerably worried in that situation.....and that was BEFORE he did all the REALLY brave stuff.
This guy is a hero...pure and simple.

Absolutely inspirational! I am dealing with my own injuries from deployments, both mental and physical. Watching this realize how lucky I am to have the chance to actually get frustrated with the VA. Soldiers will know what that means. The references to the conditions these people live in is spot on. Years since I have been out I ve given up on trying to explain this concept to civilians. They don't and never will understand the conditions soldiers fight and live in. He is so beyond his years with composure and gratitude and again amazing and inspirational speech. SGT SJN USA RET 10TH MNT DIV.

+RifleManAlex most guys, never have a nerve to try doing something like this, so they feel the need to compensate and act cavalier when they’re around service people. It happens all the time in civilian life, which is part of the reason why a lot of vets prefer to hang around each other, instead of getting crocodile compliments from a managing consultant cause he’s around his girlfriend.

This kid is brave, was very lucky and had good first line leadership. Skip to 17 minutes into his explanation of what happened. 45-seconds after he hopped off the roof in which his first line leader ordered him to come down and get inside...the roof was vaporized by a rocket attack. Just amazing courage that he didn't pee himself at that moment and was able to hold together.
That is mental toughness combined with great training. This kid has a heart of gold. As for the people who are derogatory towards the kids listening to the story. They are in awe -- the guy speaking before him is nervous and you can tell has never been around someone who has been through all of this and is a true hero. They are honored by him speaking to them -- but they also don't feel worthy.
Think of it as a group of kids listening to a father figure explain a situation or scenario of what happened. No reason to hate on these kids. Let them sit, relax and just take in everything he is telling them.
Standing up all tight and tense is not going to do them or him any good. I'm sure for many of these kids -- listening to him and looking at him, thinking of everything this young man was going through was bring tears to the eyes. You can see some of these kids wiping hands over their eyes.
As you can tell even from what the Coach says at the end. They are clueless about what this guy has been through or even what an every day military member goes through let alone a National Hero -- Of course he has the poise and the confidence to speak to a group of 20 kids in a locker room. The guy has been through countless near death experiences....not counting him actually taking a direct blast from a Grenade. That end comment just goes to show you -- how out of touch the Coach was with what this young man has been through.
I'm glad he gave the speech at the end to let them know that they need to always appreciate the lifestyle they are afforded because of the way our Countrymen and women are.

Looks wise there is nothing ugly about this man. He has a scar, which gives a man character, and a hell of a story to tell in his case. Beautiful hero, beautiful soldier. I'm not always pro war, and disagree with quite a few things, but you can't deny a hero his recognition. Most importantly he was there to cover his buddy's asses and to serve his country too, but your buddies there are who you're actively protecting. And he did just that to the fullest degree. Kudos to you sir. May you have a rich life full of wonderful experiences and good friendships, family, and love.

I read some of the comments about these kids being disrespectful. I didnt see it honestly. Theyre young soccer players. Sure, maybe he could have had a standing ovation (although, that part I dont see from obvious editing so, who knows?), but all those guys shook his hand and looked him right in the eye. Most of them were saying thank you.
Maybe they were slightly intimidated or nervous or maybe they just were kind of in awe of a guy who survived what should have killed an elephant. I wasnt in the room that day and neither were most of you. You can see the video was edited so who knows what transpired. Maybe they asked him questions for a long time and listened to him speak.
Also, I never saw any of them on their cell phones or heard anyone talking while he was speaking. Thats discipline. And a show of respect in my opinion.

ArmyCombatVe t Part of the problem with your comment is the army doesn’t know respect like Marines know respect. Just their body language came off as disrespectful, and the coach to only acknowledge his public speaking was complete bullshit. I can assume most of the people commenting on the disrespectful nature of the kids and the coach are most likely Marines, you wouldn’t understand

Shorter than every BOY that shook his hand, but 10 times the MAN as all of them!!!!
Do not know if would have done what he did, but would like to think I would have, thank God I did not have to be in that situation, but he was and he acted. And I am a 13 year Marine and have been in 3 major "Conflicts" that is what the call them, and nothing but the utmost respect for this young MAN, everyone in that room should feel very small in his presence, I know I would and again, I am a 13 year veteran Marine.
