Free Motion Embroidery

A quick introduction on how to set up your sewing machine and make a start with free motion embroidery. Remember:
*Clean your machine and use a new needle
*Lower or cover the feed dogs
*Put on an embroidery foot.
*Lower the top tension on the machine
*Frame the fabric if it is not firm
*Remember to lower the presser foot before you start stitching
*Relax... and go!
* the only secret is lots of practice!

Off to clean my machine! Do you bring the bobbin thread above the fabric for all sewing?
Im having a problem with my top thread coming off the cotton reel and winding around the thing that the spool goes onto if that makes sense and then breaks - this never happens with normal sewing and i cant work out why its happening!

I can't believe I never saw your comment Emily so no doubt my reply is way too late!!! No I don't always bring the thread up, I usually hold it out of the way but that's not great advice to give beginners! And some machines will have the option of an upright spool which reduces the problem of the tread getting caught.
