    To PROPERLY tension the cam chain: After installing the plunger (flat tapered side out, making sure it goes all the way into the bore), spring and cap. Remove the cap nut from the lock down stud exposing the philips head slots, back the flange nut off flush and start the stud into the hole, then rotate the cam clockwise sightly to take up the slack in the bottom of the chain and hold it there, (the spring against the plunger does the tensioning, NOT the lock down stud) turn in the lock down stud with a philips screw driver (against the taper) until resistance is felt, then tighten the flange nut then the cap nut against it to act as a jam nut, check both sides of chain for snugness and ensure the timing marks line up on the cam sprocket and flywheel both visible at the approximate 12 o'clock positions. Now you are ready to set the valve lash, Intake .002"-.004" , Exhaust .003"-.005".

    Super helpful, thanks dude. My son and I are doing his first big repair, piston/cyl/head... Waiting for parts. Our head is so bad that I didnt want to fix one thing at a time to find out more head parts are crap. Dang those full heads are expensive. But we can see flashlight through both exhaust and intake valves when off since the owner left it outside for years and rust/corrosion. Your video was great to see what our install will look like when parts show up. (side note: the 2 extra (long) bolts on the side of the head (not the top 4 nuts)...the one closest to the timing chain...you were able to get a socket on it. For some reason taking ours out there was 0 clearance and had to use vicegrips. Couldnt get a thin socket or wrench to wrap around it. I was jealous to see you could socket it :) thanks again, great helpful video.

    I have the same motor, i rebuilt it but now its pinging at the top end any idea were i went wrong the piston was good had the valves replaced new rings new gaskets?

    • @WaldensWorld
      @WaldensWorld  Před 7 lety

      couple things to check 1 is new piston hitting the head or head gasket ? if its a little to tall and extra base gasket will work ! 2 is it out of time and hitting an open valve ? 3 is there so much compression now you actually hear the rod bearing and not in the actual top end ! when the rod is exposed there shouldnt be any up down play but a little side to side is ok !

    did you take a compression reading before and after? I would like to know where the good compression should be at on a badger 80

    • @WaldensWorld
      @WaldensWorld  Před 8 lety

      +Clarence Leavitt no im sure it only had about 15 to 20 psi ! im guessing new closer to 80 or 90 !

      +coryncheryl1 I got ahold of a yamaha service manual for my 85 yfm80 badger & the compression Pressure listed maximum @185psi...standard @171psi...minimum @142psi... mine was at 130psi and ran but not well...its all apart now and I'm waiting for parts...
      thanks
      Clarence

    i hate when people use damn orange silicone! its junk! and the top head bolt washers are made of copper. not brass. js
