If you’ve ever wanted to see some Gibson Murphy lab unboxing/case opening videos, you’re in the right place here. Rarely do we get a chance to see a guitarist's first impressions of a Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab guitar on opening the case, but today, J.D. Simo unboxes a selection of Gibson guitars and plays us through some classic blues riffs on the:
Gibson Murphy Lab 1959 ES-355 Watermelon Red Light Aged - Watermelon Red
Gibson Murphy Lab 1959 ES-335 Vintage Natural Ultra Light Aged - Vintage Natural Gibson Murphy Lab 1964 SG Standard With Maestro Vibrola Pelham Blue Ultra Light Aged - Pelham Blue
We were lucky enough to sit and talk with J.D. Simo about some of his musical influences, and what he looks for in a guitar, while capturing his reaction as he played several of the new Murphy Lab-aged Gibson Custom Shop guitars.
J.D. also talks about his early days as a young guitarist growing up in Chicago and describes how he would take the bus to visit Chicago Music Exchange; it was there that he saw the first Gibson guitar he remembers ever seeing (an SG), and how, at the age of 21, he used the money he earned from a gig he played in Norway to purchase his first Gibson Les Paul, which he found in Nashville. As J.D. checks out the new Murphy Lab-aged Gibson Custom Shop guitars, he offers his thoughts about them, and leaves us with the question: “How do you do that, man?”

I remember the day I got my first Les Paul......bought it from some rich kid on Long Island NY...... remember walking into his house which was like a mansion.....up to his bedroom where he had a lot of guitars.....pulled it out from under his bed.....sold everything I had to buy it ......all for $350.00 bucks.....played it for 10 years and pancaked the frets......sold it for the price I paid for it......used a friend's guitar until I could afford a new one.....went to Manny's one day in 1988 and got a new one.....which I still have today.....it's in mint condition..... Cherry Sunburst Standard...... I have a number of guitars these days and mostly play a telecaster which I built.

Seen him switch direction and image a few times now and he never seems comfortable.....I mean the fake accent and put on jive talk is completely distracting and undermining his incredible talent. Sort of tend to agree, not sure about the accent comment, but this change in sound, direction, gear etc., I just don't think it plays into his strengths. Preferred his overdriven Marshall tones, and not really a fan of the reverb drenched clean tones... but then again, his choice I guess, as long as he loves doing what he's doing..

There are a lot of really nice brands besides Gibson. You can spend anywhere from around 2,000 give or take on something like an Eastman or a Heritage of which you have some very interesting aged finish options with like you said to maybe 5,000 or so on the high end for something like a Collings . I would really recommend Collings to anyone who is considering a high end/Murphy lab Gibson guitar, they make their own versions of every Gibson guitar and they make them all better than Gibson. They also offer really nice aged finishes for only a $500 up charge. Gibson makes so many guitars that you have to pick through them, where as Collings you can buy off the internet sight unseen they’re so consistent with quality control.
