You're being hated just because you have a condition you never wanted to start with. You're being hated because you're different.
Although having a disability, you tried to be an "open" and kind person.
Instead of sympathy, you get bullied.
You wonder why they hated you. In conclusion you come to the idea, that you yourself, your character the whole you is the reason why they hated you and in addition you indirectly hurting people around you. You blame yourself. Your existence is just a series of painful events. You become a victim in this unforgiving world. To end this hopelessness and agony the only solution you think is to die.

Man I imagine this as really fucked up. It's really relieving that there is another person like Shoya with similar experiences eversince he left elementary school, because it really was what saved Shoko. Because Shoya sacrificing himself for Shoka was what made them both realise they're not all alone. And in the dream during his coma when the text messages are shown, my interpretation is that they finally understand each other. Really creates a sense of hope for anyone going through circumstances like that.

Same, I resented Ueno because she was cruel and continued acting childish wanting to go back to her old ways. However, she never denied her bullying to Nishimiya. But i resented Kawai because she chose to deny throughout the whole movie and never owned up to her actions. Even when Ishida said everything at the bridge, she still tried to justify her actions and play innocent. That made me more in the end dislike her and it made it hard for me to forgive her.

I have an explanation for the end:
-Shoya looks at everyone and sees in his mind, all the x's on people fall to the ground, he cries because he knows how he put himself out there. Tomohiro was the only one there for Ishida. The parts where Shoya jumped in the pond (i think it was a pond) and when he fell into a coma for Shouko shows the fact that he DOES change.
When he cried, it shows he lived up to hi promise to god. "God... Give me just one more ounce of strength. I won't escape from my challenges in life. Starting tomorrow, I'll look at everyone's face. I'll listen to everyone's voice. I'll do everything properly from now on..."

I didn't realize that those actions of abuse was hurtful until later in middle school. Im in the late 20s and I regret doing that. And became much like shoya in this anime. It hurt and only after sometime I realized, and told myself I guess it's Karma. One of the kids apologized to me and became really kind, and I forgave him. Im confused as to why everyone is saying it would take away from the story. They slipped the confession in then just dropped the whole plot line of her loving him. I loved the way the interacted, even when they were joking about her cup size, he stayed respectful and left because he felt it was none of his business. Same with the bridge scene. The romance aspect didn't have to be they whole message, but damn did it feel right when they touched on it

Actually, I got an alternate scene. After Shoya went out of the hospital and met at the bridge under the moonlight, Shouko lies down to show her thankfulness. This was the movie and the alternate part I thought comes. She looks up to see if Shoya accepted her apologies, Shoya says her to get up, rise, they look at each other for like 5 secs and so and Shoya raises his arm slowly and Shouka gets closer to him, they hug slowly. I really would like to see some things in this way but eighter way, the movie was really great.

Worth pointing out the manga ending is different - the manga goes a few more years into the future, at which point Shoya and Shoko have both graduated college. Shoya stayed local so he could help out at home, while Shoko moved to Tokyo to study under a deaf-inclusive program (they both studied hairdressing). Originally, Shoya asked Shoko to stay local so they could stay together, and Shoko agreed, but he realized that was selfish and encouraged her to do what she wanted, and told her he'd support her no matter what.
At the end, they both attend their elementary school reunion together and the final scene is them walking into the reunion holding hands.

this movie hits different to those who used to be bullies or bullied. I used to be a bully in primary, and junior highschool, but i never thought wrong of it. Id always think that it was fine and it didnt matter anyways. I even thought that bullying was my hobby. After i watched this video, every scene where Shouko gets bullied, i always burst into tears, because now i understand what those people i used to bully felt like.. If only i could forget everything, i would probably be fine, but just like Shoya, those memories will keep coming back to haunt me and regrets wont ever cease to disappear. I've started rejecting everyone since i graduated junior high school, and i've been an introvert ever since. I just dont want anyone to get hurt by me. I dont even think i deserve to live in this beautiful world...

I am going through a similar thing. I still feel like i don't deserve to live or be happy or have people that love me. But I know me hating myself now won't change or atone for my past mistakes. What is done is done. I can't help feel self hate but it does no good. Maybe the beginning of my story was not great,( I was bullied and became a bully), but there is still the rest of my life that is unwritten. There is still the rest of my story. I get to live even though a part me feels I don't deserve it, I rather throw away all the hate I accumulated inside me than let it destroy me. Like shouya, I want to learn to live.

Having just finished this film recently, the main take away messages I got from the story is communication is important, to accept who you are and forgive yourself in order to move forward with life.
Literally everyone in this film suffers through issues in their lives because of miscommunication. The inability to convey their true feelings to each other is eventually what hurts themselves and each other. By the end of the film, everyone overcomes their own demons and issues, communicates with each other better, they accept themselves for who they are and learn to forgive others and/or themselves.
A raw and grounded film with flawed characters experiencing and overcoming deep rooted very human issues.

Most anime like this is sad and unrealistic, but the struggle and messages shown in this movie is very similar to what people are going through right now. No matter what you get out of this show the main message you have to know is that your life has value. Everyone has people that love them and there are no exceptions. Before thinking your life has no meaning think about who you’ve helped, who helped you, or who has stood by your side for life. Live for them. The protagonist and Shouko realized this too late and almost lost their lives.

When Shouko confesses to Shouya, she realises that he didn't really understand her, so she tried to confess in another way by talking about the moon...
