I'm 57 years old and I'm a lifelong nuggets fan to persuade him not to go to New York the Nuggets offered him a Max contract, which he turned down. We had just been to the Western Conference Championship but that wasn't enough for him. The Nuggets owe him nothing he's just a New York knick.

This jersey number problem is rooted in the old FIBA rule where players can only wear numbers from 4 to 15 for all 12 players on the roster. To make things even more frustrating, certain numbers were "reserved" for the respective roles.
Number 4 and number 10 were typically reserved for playmakers, or guards, 12 and 15 for centers (Vlade Divac famously wore 12 in the Lakers because of this. I can't claim for sure, but i think he took 21 in Kings, because 12 was retired already)
So, if you were to play basketball in Europe, or anywhere else outside of the North America, and you are a center, you can only have a choice of two jersey numbers. 12 or 15.
Later in 2018, FIBA decided to change this rule and allow numbers from 1 to 99 as well as 0 and 00, but for many Europeans, numbers from 4 to 15 still have deep meaning and clearly indicate the position the player have in the team and that is why Jokic was wearing 15 through his younger career days as well.
Even Team USA to this late date respects the old FIBA rule and all players that are competing at the Olympics and World Cup wore 4 to 15, which was true at the last World Cup as well.
Honestly, I don't think Jokic gave two fux who wore number 15 before him. He is the center, therefore, he is 15.
Mentioning Divac, I remembered both Divac and Predrag Stojaković had their jerseys retired in Sacramento Kings (yes, Divac was 21, and Stojaković 16), and indicative, both of them played for others teams after their "godlen years" in Sancramento Kings (If I am not wrong, Divac ended carrier in Lakers, and Stojaković in Dallas), just like Carmello Anthony, but Sacramento didn't have an issue to retire their jerseys and doing so, to claim them for ethernity as Kings' legacy players. Nevertheless, I doubt both Serbian players knew at all for that tradition, and even if they knew, I doubt they even once think they might be honoured like that, being foreigners... Actually, both of them were caught by surprise with that honour, and there was even watery eyes on ceremony.
I personally didn't fallow Carmello while he was playing in Denver, and I don't know how big his impact was on the Nuggets' game then, but attacking publicly, demanding, calling out, asking honour from club whose funs are actually booing you when ever they see you on their court... well, that is almost mental issue for psychiatry...

So, I am actually sure Kroenke familly is listening to this missreable complaining of Carmello, and even if they might had some plans to honour his years in Nuggets, I am sure now there is -0% chance for that...
I never seen or heard that some prize or honour could be given thanks to emotional or media blackmail and claiming, you work, you struggle, and some day someone will recognize your effort and rewards you, or not. @@user-it4yn9vz6c First of all, no, that USA team have numbers signed very different, yes AI is 4 and Marbury is 5, but also you get the power forward Boozer wearing 7 and small forward Richard Jefferson wearing 15, it's more likely that AI pick the closest to his 3. Second, this "rule" doesn't exist, yes guards tend to get assigned with smaller numbers and bigs with big ones, but not 12-15 that's just weird, what usually done is 456 are guards, 78 are small forwards, 910 are power forwards, 11-13 are centres, and 2 extra are random fits. And more importantly, it's not a rule or anything just a habbit, when you are young you don't pick numbers you got assigned, that's how these rotation came to be, players got attached with their numbers so most of them will wear the same in pro league, but other certain don't have to. Even in national teams, when you get to a point you are a big deal, compete in real games like the Olympic, you can certainly pick your own number within limit, even use one same number no matter what position you play.

Carmelo learned only late in life that player legacies are based on rings and not personal stats. He was capable of winning a championship but didn't have the mentality to do so. Late in his career he made a desperate attempt to come off the bench for the Lakers, something he laughed at earlier in his career, in the hope to make the necessary sacrifice to have his name talked about amongst the greats. It wasn't meant to be.
Now that he is retired from the NBA what does he have to show for the over 1300 games he played? Championships? Finals Appearances? Conference championships? The two things he will be remembered for by many basketball fans are his time in Denver and NY. He failed to bring Denver their first championship in 8 years and return New York to championship status in the 7 years there. Jokic has surpassed everything Carmelo has done without being the scoring machine Melo was. In NY, Melo will be remembered for chasing away Jeremy Lin, one of the biggest fan favorites and fastest growing star in the NBA at the time. A full NY year with Jeremy Lin and Carmelo Anthony would have fans of all backgrounds rooting for the Knicks like they haven't in over a decade. But Melo's ego couldn't handle being in the shadow of an up and coming star.
So looking back at it, all Melo had for his legacy was turning Denver into a playoff worthy team and that was it. And now that Jokic turned them into a championship team and will have his number retired, Melo will likely never have his number retired anywhere or be remembered for anything other than being a scoring machine without the killer instinct necessary to be talked about with the greats.
It hurts but this is the problem when you pay athletes tens of millions of dollars up front without any guarantees from them whether they can or will produce results. They take the money and don't produce what you pay them for.

I am a Knicks fan, I have nothing against Melo, he seems like a nice guy. I followed Syracuse's improbable championship run, he was the sole reason for it. I was excited by his entry to the NBA, and years later, was happy to see the Knicks get him. Players around him have nothing but good things to say about him. His years with the Knicks were similar to his years with the Nuggets, he plays an isolation game on offense and puts little effort into defense. The current NBA has changed, and I feel he was holding the Nuggets and Knicks back while other teams were passing, shooting threes and executing perimeter defense. The Nuggets have developed a great passing game and defense, and Nikola is the most important piece. They have a championship and MVP trophies. Also, the Nuggets handed #15 to a second round pick who didn't even come to the US for a year, there is no way they intended to have Nikola "erase" Melo's legacy. Seems like Melo is looking back on his career and realizing he skated through on God given talent (and he could score like a machine), but added little to it.
If only people let logic and common sense shape the way they think instead of raw emotion and insecurities
